Wonthaggi /ˈwɒnθæɡi/ is a seaside town located 132 kilometres (82 mi) south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for its coal mining it is now the largest town in South Gippsland, a regional area with extensive tourism, beef and dairy industries. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 4,354.
The name "Wonthaggi" is an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "home" from the Bunurong (south-central Kulin). It was used in the area some time before 1 August 1910 when the town was founded.
The Bunurong aboriginal people were custodians of this stretch of coast for thousands of years prior to white settlement. The Boakoolawal clan lived in the Kilcunda area south of the Bass River, and the Yowenjerre were west of the Tarwin River along what is now the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park. Middens containing charcoal and shellfish mark the location of their campsites along the coast.
Coal was discovered by explorer William Hovell at Cape Paterson in 1826, and was subsequently mined from the Powlett River fields in the region, between 1859 and 1864. However transporting the coal by whale boat through the surf to larger ships anchored offshore proved costly and dangerous and mining activity was soon curtailed. The coastal sands off Wonthaggi occasionally uncover the remains of ships wrecked along the coast.

If ever you were here in winter It comes in off the Strait You'd know why they call it 'wind and rain' Lucky we're here in autumn But I would keep you warm If ever we're stuck in winter in Wonthaggi But we'll be cruising north bound Away from the frosty moon Murwillumbah or maybe Billinudgel Or up through the Border Ranges And down through the Numinbah Or further on through to Montville or Maleny Or somewhere where it's warm May, June, July, you don't go to Wonthaggi Check out the big bouffants Like hairy air balloons Guaranteed to hold in the wind There's a titter in the town The women are 'tizzying up' Not...

The Wonthaggi Railway line branched from the Yarram line at Nyora and was originally built to transport coal from the mines around Wonthaggi to Melbourne. Although coal was not carried in later years, a weekly goods train operated from Melbourne and a Walker rail car ran between Wonthaggi and Nyora to connect with the passenger trains on the South Gippsland line. An intereting part of the line was the section where it ran beside Bass Strait and the surf beach at Kilcunda and crossed a high wooden trestle bridge over Bourne Creek, This film, taken not long before the line closed gives a brief insight into some of the operations of the line. It was taken between Wonthaggi and Anderson. There is another film taken on the Wonthaggi line regarding the closure of the Kirrak coal mine in the same...
Part of My Heart in Wonthaggi was written in 1934 by Jack O'Hagen, he was commissioned by the Government to tour towns in Victoria & write a theme song for each town. When the soldiers marched home this is the song they sang. Locals are brought to tears when this is played, Leigh Moran is the only person commissioned by the Coalminers of Wonthaggi to record this song. Lee Owens arranged the backing track & Colin Suggett did the recording. Leigh Moran sang it live on ABC radio in relation to the town of Wonthaggi 100 yrs Centenary celebrations.
Damascus College vehicle Rolling Thunder No. 65 competed in the annual Wonthaggi Grand Prix in late March. Rolling Thunder managed to come back from a devastating beginning to the race with multiple hours in pits due to mechanical issue. As a team we managed to pull up from 15th in our category to 8th through the night, we held that position for the remainder of the race. Special thanks to Mark, Pete, Laura, KJ and all parents and students involved in getting us to Thaggi this year, it was a great clean fun race so a thank you to all teams involved. Massive thank you to Ryan for putting up with me constantly pestering him with a camera, i'm sure it'll be someone elses turn next race. Music Supplied by Royaltrax and Bensounds.
Two significant coal mine disasters took place here at the no 20 Shaft in Dalyston, Victoria, Australia The first occurred during the first year of operation on the 20th February 1931, when 4 men died underground. Then disaster strikes once again, on the 15th February 1937, in which another 13 men died underground this explosion was so powerful ,it blew the cage out of the shaft some 40 ft above the surface, and hit the poppet head, making this the worst mining disaster in Australia's history. The newspaper of the day "the Canberra Times" can be read from the national archives. (Link Below) http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2424471 This second disaster, in which Thirteen miners were killed from the explosion, resulted in a successful national campaign to improve conditions for al...

Let's be honest, if you're visiting Inverloch it's because you want to visit the beaches. So here is the Sightsee TV guide to Inverloch's beaches.
Bakal seru, nih, kayaknya! Tapi, by the way, mereka udah bangun belum, ya?
