Avery Fisher Hall

Avery Fisher Hall, a concert hall in New York City, is part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. It is the home of the New York Philharmonic, with a capacity of 2,738 seats.
Designed by Max Abramovitz, the hall opened in 1962 as Philharmonic Hall, as the new home concert venue of the New York Philharmonic, after the orchestra moved from Carnegie Hall. The hall was renamed for Avery Fisher, a member of the Philharmonic board of directors, following his $10.5 million donation to the orchestra in 1973.
The acoustical consulting firm of Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) was hired to design the interior acoustics for the hall. Based on their experience designing and analyzing existing concert halls, BBN acousticians recommended that the hall be designed as a "shoebox" with narrowly-spaced parallel sides (similar in shape to the acoustically-acclaimed Symphony Hall, Boston), with seating for no more than 2,400 patrons. Lincoln Center initially agreed with the recommendation, and BBN provided a series of design specifications and recommendations. However, the New York Herald Tribune began a campaign to increase the seating capacity of the new hall. Late in the design stage, the hall was redesigned to accommodate the critics' desires, but these changes invalidated much of BBN's acoustical design. BBN engineers told Lincoln Center that the hall would sound different from how they had intended it to, but they could not predict what the changes would do.

Kiev
Kiev or Kyiv (Ukrainian: Київ [ˈkɪjiw] (

Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kiev Metro.
The name Kiev is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of four legendary founders of the city (brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and sister Lybid). During its history, Kiev, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of great prominence and relative obscurity. The city probably existed as a commercial centre as early as the 5th century. A Slavic settlement on the great trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople, Kiev was a tributary of the Khazars, until seized by the Varangians (Vikings) in the mid-9th century. Under Varangians rule, the city became a capital of the Rus', the first East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1240, the city lost most of its influence for the centuries to come. It was a provincial capital of marginal importance in the outskirts of the territories controlled by its powerful neighbours; first the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, followed by Poland and Russia.

Musikverein
The Wiener Musikverein, (German pronunciation: [ˌviːnɐ̯ muˌziːkfɛʁˈʔaɪ̯n]; "Viennese Music Association"), commonly shortened to Musikverein, is a concert hall in the Innere Stadt borough of Vienna, Austria. It is the home to the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra.
The "Great Hall" (Großer Saal) due to its highly regarded acoustics is considered one of the finest concert halls in the world, along with Berlin's Konzerthaus, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Boston's Symphony Hall, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. None of these halls was built in the modern era with the application of acoustics science, and, with the partial exception of the horseshoe-shaped Colón, all share a long, tall, and narrow shoebox shape.
This building is located on Dumbastraße/Bösendorferstraße behind the Hotel Imperial near the Ringstraße boulevard and the Wien River, between Bösendorferstraße and Karlsplatz. However, since Bösendorferstraße is a relatively small street, the building is better known as being between Karlsplatz and Kärntner Ring (part of Ringstraße loop). It was erected as the new concert hall run by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, on a piece of land provided by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in 1863. The plans were designed by Theophil Hansen in the Neoclassical style of an ancient Greek temple, including a concert hall as well as a smaller chamber music hall. The building was inaugurated on January 6, 1870.

Elizabeth Miklosi (born August 10, 1983) is an American professional wrestler, valet, model, jazz musician, and actress. She is best known under her ring name, Lizzy Valentine.
Miklosi was trained by Homicide and began her career under the ring name Miss Led with the Long Island Wrestling Federation and spent her time honing her skills all over the Northeast independent circuit. She also appeared in numerous other independent wrestling promotions, managing multiple wrestlers and feuding with multiple others. In Jersey All Pro Wrestling, she managed Dixie and had her first professional match against April Hunter. Mikosi also managed Nick Berk and Z-Barr in Liberty All-Star Wrestling in Philadelphia and NWA Florida. Miklosi also had a career long feud with Alexis Laree. The two faced each other up and down the East Coast in KAPOW!, Southern Championship Wrestling, and Dangerous Women of Wrestling. Miklosi has also teamed with the Ballard Brothers in various promotions. She even toured Alaska and wrestled matches for the troops in the Middle East. And as J-Love, she feuded with Pogo the Clown in Xtreme Pro Wrestling. In one match, Elizabeth flipped Tracy Brooks down to the mat by the hair.

No recording, no matter how perfect, can do a justice to this sonata. The sheer power and strength of this enormous stream of sound, Amazon river of piano writing, doesn't translate well into limited bandwidth of even the most hi-def capturing. It's best left to concert halls. I hope those of you who have a chance will visit Dortmund in a couple of weeks , April 17th to be exact : tinyurl.com There is lots of Scriabin, more Rach and some Liszt...but this piece is a true centerpiece of a program. And this it the only occasion for me to play it live this year. So, grab your chance :-) lol Few words about the piece- being Op 28 , it has far more famous and popular pieces for its neighbors: 2nd Symphony, Third Concerto, Cello Sonata...Since no Hollywood movie ever borrowed either a melody or a plot fro this piece, it remains largely as unknown and unappreciated as it was when "born". Rachmaninoff, being extremely insecure about himself and his art, asked for an opinion of several friends. Of course, being real friends ( lol) they didn't pass a chance to say that the piece is too long, too boring and too difficult. Rachmaninoff subjected it to several bodily mutilations- again, acting on "helpful" friends' suggestions, cutting out good 10 minutes = 25% of the original piece. He later said about inflicting similar cuts in 2nd Symphony that he feels like he is cutting his own live flesh... One of those friends, Konstantin Igumnov, delivered the debut performance of the mutilated ...

So, grab your chance :-) lol Few words about the piece- being Op 28 , it has far more famous and popular pieces for its neighbors: 2nd Symphony, Third Concerto, Cello Sonata...Since no Hollywood movie ever borrowed either a melody or a plot fro this piece, it remains largely as unknown and unappreciated as it was when "born". Rachmaninoff, being extremely insecure about himself and his art, asked for an opinion of several friends. Of course, being real friends ( lol) they didn't pass a chance to say that the piece is too long, too boring and too difficult. Rachmaninoff subjected it to several bodily mutilations- again, acting on "helpful" friends' suggestions, cutting out good 10 minutes = 25% of the original piece. He later said about inflicting similar cuts in 2nd Symphony that he feels like he is cutting his own live flesh... One of those friends, Konstantin Igumnov, delivered the debut performance of the mutilated ...

MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION Godowsky Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Johann Strauss: No. 2, Die Fledermaus Rightly called "one of the most complicated stunts ever written for piano", this piece probably has more notes per second, or per square centimeter of sheet music, than anything comparable. For those listeners impatient enough to "endure" a few minutes of most delightful and inventive music , and just interested in world record in speed ( LOL again ) , just scroll to @ 6:00" , fasten your seat belts and don't complain about " speeded-up and fast forwarded" video. It happens to be live and with quite a few witnesses :) Godowsky called his paraphrase "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Strauss' Fledermaus". It is a contrapuntal piece, though it has nothing to do with fugues or Bach &Co.; It just means that he first develops Strauss' tunes by bending and misshaping them to his heart's desire, and then he combines all of them -- running independent of each other in rhythm and contours -- into just two hands (or is it six hands like in this video -- that would explain a lot ). It is not a fun piece to play ( oh no!) -- it is a supremely fun piece to play with . One of Chopin's most priceless performance remarks is at the beginning of this Nocturne -- "sotto voce". Just like that : not a girlish "piano" , not an ambivalent "mezzo forte" , not even meaty forte ( the last thing you want here is an "opera" voice for this melody ).It effectively bars all over-the-top cheap and showy "expressive emotions" -- no eye rolling allowed , no hair flailing, no hands flying , no sobs , no visible tears.... A musical equivalent of the famed British " keeping a stiff upper lip "- this "sotto voce" gives us the right sense of what this piece is about .Just as Chopin's 2nd sonata this nocturne deals directly and openly with such tragic subjects as death, loss and grief ... except , here you are allowed to leave personal comments. 2nd sonata is a depiction of all those things , this Nocturne is a commentary- or an epitaph.....the fifth movement that would come after the Finale ...If you ever visit La Madeleine in Paris ( Chopin's parish church where his funeral was held on October 30th ) think about this Nocturne , OK? PS. Talking about parallels between Rachmaninoff and Chopin works , don't you think that "doppio movimento" part ( last pages ) sounds ominously like Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableau E flat Minor Op39?

Written by Chopin when he was not even 20 years old, this waltz was destined -- by Chopin himself- to be burned at a time of his death as an immature and unpolished piece.
Luckily, music doesn't burn :-)
The interpretational problem with this waltz (and many other op.post. pieces) is that we cannot be exactly sure what Chopin's final intent would have been since he never had a chance, or desire, to prepare it for publication. There are no authoritative editions , no Urtext- just various manuscripts , often written on a stray piece of paper at some lady friend's album, often varying to such a degree as to make pieces barely recognizable. Thus we have -- in some better modern editions -- countless versions "bis" that vary from just a few notes to pages and pages... my "favorite" is a middle part of F minor Waltz where the downbeat is moved by a whole quarter - becoming a third beat instead....certainly gives any performer a case of vertigo this waltz is no different. For this version I used mostly "BIS" manuscript -- it has some really fresh and funky sounding cadences. If one can treat a #1 version (the one most played and most used by students ) as something melancholic and sad ( though why would 17-year old be so sad ), the BIS versions with their incredibly playful endings and unexpected turns ( every time is different ) doesn't leave room for gloom. Tempo? We have different versions here -- Moderato-- raised as a flag by proponents of gloom-and-doom-- is accompanied by 152 per quarter, which places it solidly into upper Allegro territory on a standard metronome . May I remind that Beethoven's Allegro ma non troppo is mere 132 per quarter. And how about BIS versions having NO tempo indications? Ah, what to do, what to do??? Just enjoy and play any way your heart desires. That's a pleasure and marvel of music -- there are so many different ways to play and all will find their audience . If you , my dear listener , are into more study of this phenomena -- just look on YouTube for such varied versions as Cziffra , Erez for slow, Rubinstein and Ashkenazy for the middle, and such heavy weights as Cortot , Lipatti and Yakov Zak for fastest ever ( incidentally Zak was my teacher's teacher :-) )

Incidentally it is called "Valse du petit chien", "A little doggie waltz" in French. How it happened? Actually a friend of Chopin's and his biographer cited a little playful puppy running rounds trying to catch its tail - as an inspiration for this piece. Whatever :-)

This is Chopin's response to Liszt's "Funerailles" ( I know, I know, Liszt wrote it AFTER Chopin died - so let's say it was Liszt's response to Chopin's Fantasy) The same plan - starting with a funeral introduction , same f -minor, same abundance of octaves... But Funerailles is a great piano war-horse, favorite of any "virtuoso" with a decent octave technique - sure and cheap way to impress and thrill the audiences. Fantasy in comparison is a poor cousin , underappreciated and often misunderstood : the worst offenders are often female pianists ( LOL, huuuuuge grin goes here ) playing it in overly sentimental and romanticized way - complete with hands flailing , eyes rolling and hair flying :-) Guys just can't do it :-)
How did it happen? Liszt was a great self-promotion and marketing guy - he discovered a neat trick of "programming" in music , forcing music "to tell a story"- and listeners suddenly thought " Gee, now we understand what this music is about , how cool !" This was his trademark -but it was certainly not his invention. In fact , most if not all music has a "program" , something composer thought of when composing and something we think of when we listen .It can be something very concrete and extremely detailed ( Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique for example)- or just a vague hint of an idea that makes us think further ( Beethoven 5th Symphony ).The problem with detailed programs is that music can become "dated" , tied to a certain event that might be of no importance to future listeners. People can relate in perpetuity to " the fate knocking on the door" of the 5th symphony. But we can never again ( hopefully ) feel what French audience must have felt on Berlioz' premiere during the third movement with its guillotine strike. I bet their hair was standing up and Goosebumps were covering the listeners who still remembered Terror some years before...I think that even watching Avatar in 3D is nothing in comparison to that experience :-)
Chopin was much more subtle in his "programs"-he catered to more sophisticated smaller audience of salons rather than big concert halls. These people knew the historical context and could understand him without need to spell it out . In order to fully appreciate his music we must know at least a bit of history too. Then it becomes clear that Chopin was so different from a stereotyped effeminate ,sickly romantic virtuoso image. He was a true titan, not in body but in spirit - singlehandedly ( with few brethren poets ,artists etc.)keeping the whole people from oblivion and cultural destruction. For his people , his country, was at this time a mere geographic term . Formerly a proud and powerful nation ,one of Europe superpowers, Poland has fallen so low because of internal discord that it was picked piece by piece by strong and brutal neighbors until it disappeared. New "owners" were bent on wiping national identity and pride to secure their new acquisitions. They would have succeeded was it not for Chopin. You know that musicologists call him a first" national" composer. For a good reason - he created an epic of his nation in music just as Homer created his in Odyssey or Virgil in Aeneid... And we are not only talking about things like Polonaises or Mazurkas fitting into this "national" category. Fantasy is a prime example of thinly veiled national music. Why? Bear with me while I take you through last foray into history. Chopin and his family ended up in a part of Poland that was grabbed by Russian Empire. He traveled abroad with Russian passport ( Chopin , a Russian composer ? LOL) and he had to lie on his exit visa application ( yes, I am serious ) that he is in transit to New World, Americas. He lived for almost whole his life with a stamp " in Transit". The single event in history that changed his life was Polish uprising of 1830-31, a noble but doomed to fail attempt by patriots to overthrow occupying forces ( Revolutionary Etude was written the night he got the news of Russian Cossacks entering Warsaw , he didn't know if his family even survived all carnage and rape ) . The rebels was brutally destroyed and all the hope of freedom was lost. Chopin realized that he will never see his native land - or even his family. All his life he was carrying in his soul - and in his music - the memory of this event and of its unsung heroes. Fantasy is an ode to all those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom.

This is an enigma of a nocturne. There are many things written about it , all trying to explain it away, to make sense of it. You probably heard about " death in Venice, murder perhaps.. ....body silently covered by soft waves while the moon keeps shining etc ".....Ah , all this romantic stuff - I will add just my two cents worth, no more ...
If Nocturnes are indeed songs of love , this one has strong undertones of jealousy , betrayal and , ultimately , death.
It hauntingly fascinating -- but you can't call it beautiful. Just think about the meloldy here - where is it ??? and can you call this strange and gratingly chromatic chant a melody ? Or .... another question , which key IS it -- C sharp minor or major? Is it a half-smile or half-cry?...The melody very soon becomes a duet -- and then middle part comes all of a sudden as a violent burst of energy and action. I don't recall any other piece of Chopin (supposedly effeminate and weakling invalid of a composer ) where he would use triple forte- fortissimo so boldly ( that is like FFF forte !)The octave recitative in the left hand before the recap sounds like a curse . The most telling and poignant remark however is reserved for the very last "words" of the duet before the coda: Chopin writes " con duolo" (with grief) - the last farewell of unhappy lovers perhaps...

For those visual people ( like myself LOL) here is a perfect visual match : type pre-Raphaelites into Google image search -- you will see "Ophelia" and many others that fit the mood and color of the piece perfectly
PSPS. On understanding composer's intent: Chopin often uses remark "con anima". Don't mix it with "animato" . Yes , the root is the same but the meaning and action is opposite. It was made very clear in this nocturne -- in the middle part there are measures marked "con anima" and then come the ones marked "stretto"."Con anima" bars are slowing down. He treated con anima literally -- "with soul" -- not "in an animated way". Russian language has a better direct translation "душевно"!

I went through love-hate "relationship" with this Nocturne. When I was asked by Lanaudiere Fesitval to select 7 Nocturnes for the concert ( I never played any before - to my utter shame ) I had to quickly flip through the sheet music and pick ones I thought I might stand :-) This one was number "last" on my list of things to do. I didn't start learning it until it was almost too late ( those who watched my webcast of practice can confirm :-)). I dreaded the moment when I will get sick and tired of this sweetest thing ever written with its gorgeous but repetitious melody....
Then I had my "eureka" moment . it happened when I started looking at Chopin's metronome markings - in all other Nocturnes they were perfectly in sync with today's consensus - maybe little faster here , slower there... But this one - oh my God ! Lento Sostenuto marked as 50 beats per minute in half-measure ( 150BPM in eights ). You know how fast is it ???? Check-it out and see if you can keep up with Mr. Chopin LOL ..... i can't , I still play it waaaaaay under tempo .Let's see how many "critics" will leave comments saying it is too fast .....But , no matter what it makes a perfect sense- and suddenly my dread turned into astonishment at Chopin's genius.The whole piece is suddenly transformed from overly long sugary-syrupy chant to an exalted and impassioned speech- you make whatever you want of this speech , maybe it is a declaration of love ? after all - the piece ends with the most beautiful duet of two voices....

One of Chopin's most priceless performance remarks is at the beginning of this Nocturne -- "sotto voce". Just like that : not a girlish "piano" , not an ambivalent "mezzo forte" , not even meaty forte ( the last thing you want here is an "opera" voice for this melody ).It effectively bars all over-the-top cheap and showy "expressive emotions" -- no eye rolling allowed , no hair flailing, no hands flying , no sobs , no visible tears.... A musical equivalent of the famed British " keeping a stiff upper lip "- this "sotto voce" gives us the right sense of what this piece is about .Just as Chopin's 2nd sonata this nocturne deals directly and openly with such tragic subjects as death, loss and grief ... except , here you are allowed to leave personal comments. 2nd sonata is a depiction of all those things , this Nocturne is a commentary- or an epitaph.....the fifth movement that would come after the Finale ...If you ever visit La Madeleine in Paris ( Chopin's parish church where his funeral was held on October 30th ) think about this Nocturne , OK?
PS. Talking about parallels between Rachmaninoff and Chopin works , don't you think that "doppio movimento" part ( last pages ) sounds ominously like Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableau E flat Minor Op39?

this nocturne IMHO is very close in spirit to Rachmaninoff Prelude G Major . Though neither composer gave any title or a program to both works - it is very much about the nature in its beauty-and its fury. It is less about human emotions and introspective - and more about contemplating the beauty of our world. Think of it as a clear and bright May day interrupted for a moment by downpouring rain, thunder and wind gusts - only to return moments later to a peace and serenity. Beethoven did it in Pastoral symphony and inspired countless imitators LOL

Criminal Minds - AXN
AXN LatinAmerica called us to do the Promo of one of its primetime shows "Criminal Minds", which main characters are a team of profilers from de FBI that search into the criminal minds to predicts their next move.
When we first read the script from our friends from Sony, we realized it was quite a challenge! The idea was to build the body of one of the criminal minds with types and phrases simultaneously with the audio. Phrases that would cause most of the psychological traumas.
Bring the script to life we proposed to tattoo the typographic phrases on a person skin and we walked into the challenge of create a tie between the ANALOGOUS and the DIGITAL.
On one hand we hand painted the phrases with brushes to give them more expressiveness and realism. On the other hand we modeled the human been in 3D and we mapped the phases on him, specially on his face. Taking as reference a great audio work, that'd define the timing to develop and animate the phrases, and with a delicate edition work that intensify the chaotic rhythm by the end of the piece we manage to transmit part of the "Criminal Minds" chaos, full of interruptions and torments thoughts, full of internal voices that push him to commit the crimes.

Chopin Waltz No 10bis, Op 69 #2
Written by Chopin when he was not even 20 years old, this waltz was destined -- by Chopin himself- to be burned at a time of his death as an immature and unpolished piece.
Luckily, music doesn't burn :-)
The interpretational problem with this waltz (and many other op.post. pieces) is that we cannot be exactly sure what Chopin's final intent would have been since he never had a chance, or desire, to prepare it for publication. There are no authoritative editions , no Urtext- just various manuscripts , often written on a stray piece of paper at some lady friend's album, often varying to such a degree as to make pieces barely recognizable. Thus we have -- in some better modern editions -- countless versions "bis" that vary from just a few notes to pages and pages... my "favorite" is a middle part of F minor Waltz where the downbeat is moved by a whole quarter - becoming a third beat instead....certainly gives any performer a case of vertigo this waltz is no different. For this version I used mostly "BIS" manuscript -- it has some really fresh and funky sounding cadences. If one can treat a #1 version (the one most played and most used by students ) as something melancholic and sad ( though why would 17-year old be so sad ), the BIS versions with their incredibly playful endings and unexpected turns ( every time is different ) doesn't leave room for gloom. Tempo? We have different versions here -- Moderato-- raised as a flag by proponents of gloom-and-doom-- is accompanied by 152 per quarter, which places it solidly into upper Allegro territory on a standard metronome . May I remind that Beethoven's Allegro ma non troppo is mere 132 per quarter. And how about BIS versions having NO tempo indications? Ah, what to do, what to do??? Just enjoy and play any way your heart desires. That's a pleasure and marvel of music -- there are so many different ways to play and all will find their audience . If you , my dear listener , are into more study of this phenomena -- just look on YouTube for such varied versions as Cziffra , Erez for slow, Rubinstein and Ashkenazy for the middle, and such heavy weights as Cortot , Lipatti and Yakov Zak for fastest ever ( incidentally Zak was my teacher's teacher :-) )

Please, pleeeeease , don't succumb to a common mistake of thinking of it as "An-under-minute-waltz". It would be called a "Bumblebee waltz" then.! No, the title of the piece means a delicate, petite, small-sized , exquisite -- like a piece of a sparkling jewelry - think of the expression "in minute detail". That' s the meaning.
Incidentally it is called "Valse du petit chien", "A little doggie waltz" in French. How it happened? Actually a friend of Chopin's and his biographer cited a little playful puppy running rounds trying to catch its tail - as an inspiration for this piece. Whatever :-)

This is Chopin's response to Liszt's "Funerailles" ( I know, I know, Liszt wrote it AFTER Chopin died - so let's say it was Liszt's response to Chopin's Fantasy) The same plan - starting with a funeral introduction , same f -minor, same abundance of octaves... But Funerailles is a great piano war-horse, favorite of any "virtuoso" with a decent octave technique - sure and cheap way to impress and thrill the audiences. Fantasy in comparison is a poor cousin , underappreciated and often misunderstood : the worst offenders are often female pianists ( LOL, huuuuuge grin goes here ) playing it in overly sentimental and romanticized way - complete with hands flailing , eyes rolling and hair flying :-) Guys just can't do it :-)
How did it happen? Liszt was a great self-promotion and marketing guy - he discovered a neat trick of "programming" in music , forcing music "to tell a story"- and listeners suddenly thought " Gee, now we understand what this music is about , how cool !" This was his trademark -but it was certainly not his invention. In fact , most if not all music has a "program" , something composer thought of when composing and something we think of when we listen .It can be something very concrete and extremely detailed ( Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique for example)- or just a vague hint of an idea that makes us think further ( Beethoven 5th Symphony ).The problem with detailed programs is that music can become "dated" , tied to a certain event that might be of no importance to future listeners. People can relate in perpetuity to " the fate knocking on the door" of the 5th symphony. But we can never again ( hopefully ) feel what French audience must have felt on Berlioz' premiere during the third movement with its guillotine strike. I bet their hair was standing up and Goosebumps were covering the listeners who still remembered Terror some years before...I think that even watching Avatar in 3D is nothing in comparison to that experience :-)
Chopin was much more subtle in his "programs"-he catered to more sophisticated smaller audience of salons rather than big concert halls. These people knew the historical context and could understand him without need to spell it out . In order to fully appreciate his music we must know at least a bit of history too. Then it becomes clear that Chopin was so different from a stereotyped effeminate ,sickly romantic virtuoso image. He was a true titan, not in body but in spirit - singlehandedly ( with few brethren poets ,artists etc.)keeping the whole people from oblivion and cultural destruction. For his people , his country, was at this time a mere geographic term . Formerly a proud and powerful nation ,one of Europe superpowers, Poland has fallen so low because of internal discord that it was picked piece by piece by strong and brutal neighbors until it disappeared. New "owners" were bent on wiping national identity and pride to secure their new acquisitions. They would have succeeded was it not for Chopin. You know that musicologists call him a first" national" composer. For a good reason - he created an epic of his nation in music just as Homer created his in Odyssey or Virgil in Aeneid... And we are not only talking about things like Polonaises or Mazurkas fitting into this "national" category. Fantasy is a prime example of thinly veiled national music. Why? Bear with me while I take you through last foray into history. Chopin and his family ended up in a part of Poland that was grabbed by Russian Empire. He traveled abroad with Russian passport ( Chopin , a Russian composer ? LOL) and he had to lie on his exit visa application ( yes, I am serious ) that he is in transit to New World, Americas. He lived for almost whole his life with a stamp " in Transit". The single event in history that changed his life was Polish uprising of 1830-31, a noble but doomed to fail attempt by patriots to overthrow occupying forces ( Revolutionary Etude was written the night he got the news of Russian Cossacks entering Warsaw , he didn't know if his family even survived all carnage and rape ) . The rebels was brutally destroyed and all the hope of freedom was lost. Chopin realized that he will never see his native land - or even his family. All his life he was carrying in his soul - and in his music - the memory of this event and of its unsung heroes. Fantasy is an ode to all those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom.

This is an enigma of a nocturne. There are many things written about it , all trying to explain it away, to make sense of it. You probably heard about " death in Venice, murder perhaps.. ....body silently covered by soft waves while the moon keeps shining etc ".....Ah , all this romantic stuff - I will add just my two cents worth, no more ...
If Nocturnes are indeed songs of love , this one has strong undertones of jealousy , betrayal and , ultimately , death.
It hauntingly fascinating -- but you can't call it beautiful. Just think about the meloldy here - where is it ??? and can you call this strange and gratingly chromatic chant a melody ? Or .... another question , which key IS it -- C sharp minor or major? Is it a half-smile or half-cry?...The melody very soon becomes a duet -- and then middle part comes all of a sudden as a violent burst of energy and action. I don't recall any other piece of Chopin (supposedly effeminate and weakling invalid of a composer ) where he would use triple forte- fortissimo so boldly ( that is like FFF forte !)The octave recitative in the left hand before the recap sounds like a curse . The most telling and poignant remark however is reserved for the very last "words" of the duet before the coda: Chopin writes " con duolo" (with grief) - the last farewell of unhappy lovers perhaps...
PS.
For those visual people ( like myself LOL) here is a perfect visual match : type pre-Raphaelites into Google image search -- you will see "Ophelia" and many others that fit the mood and color of the piece perfectly
PSPS. On understanding composer's intent: Chopin often uses remark "con anima". Don't mix it with "animato" . Yes , the root is the same but the meaning and action is opposite. It was made very clear in this nocturne -- in the middle part there are measures marked "con anima" and then come the ones marked "stretto"."Con anima" bars are slowing down. He treated con anima literally -- "with soul" -- not "in an animated way". Russian language has a better direct translation "душевно"!

I went through love-hate "relationship" with this Nocturne. When I was asked by Lanaudiere Fesitval to select 7 Nocturnes for the concert ( I never played any before - to my utter shame ) I had to quickly flip through the sheet music and pick ones I thought I might stand :-) This one was number "last" on my list of things to do. I didn't start learning it until it was almost too late ( those who watched my webcast of practice can confirm :-)). I dreaded the moment when I will get sick and tired of this sweetest thing ever written with its gorgeous but repetitious melody....
Then I had my "eureka" moment . it happened when I started looking at Chopin's metronome markings - in all other Nocturnes they were perfectly in sync with today's consensus - maybe little faster here , slower there... But this one - oh my God ! Lento Sostenuto marked as 50 beats per minute in half-measure ( 150BPM in eights ). You know how fast is it ???? Check-it out and see if you can keep up with Mr. Chopin LOL ..... i can't , I still play it waaaaaay under tempo .Let's see how many "critics" will leave comments saying it is too fast .....But , no matter what it makes a perfect sense- and suddenly my dread turned into astonishment at Chopin's genius.The whole piece is suddenly transformed from overly long sugary-syrupy chant to an exalted and impassioned speech- you make whatever you want of this speech , maybe it is a declaration of love ? after all - the piece ends with the most beautiful duet of two voices....

One of Chopin's most priceless performance remarks is at the beginning of this Nocturne -- "sotto voce". Just like that : not a girlish "piano" , not an ambivalent "mezzo forte" , not even meaty forte ( the last thing you want here is an "opera" voice for this melody ).It effectively bars all over-the-top cheap and showy "expressive emotions" -- no eye rolling allowed , no hair flailing, no hands flying , no sobs , no visible tears.... A musical equivalent of the famed British " keeping a stiff upper lip "- this "sotto voce" gives us the right sense of what this piece is about .Just as Chopin's 2nd sonata this nocturne deals directly and openly with such tragic subjects as death, loss and grief ... except , here you are allowed to leave personal comments. 2nd sonata is a depiction of all those things , this Nocturne is a commentary- or an epitaph.....the fifth movement that would come after the Finale ...If you ever visit La Madeleine in Paris ( Chopin's parish church where his funeral was held on October 30th ) think about this Nocturne , OK?
PS. Talking about parallels between Rachmaninoff and Chopin works , don't you think that "doppio movimento" part ( last pages ) sounds ominously like Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableau E flat Minor Op39?

Though neither composer gave any title or a program to both works - it is very much about the nature in its beauty-and its fury. It is less about human emotions and introspective - and more about contemplating the beauty of our world. Think of it as a clear and bright May day interrupted for a moment by downpouring rain, thunder and wind gusts - only to return moments later to a peace and serenity. Beethoven did it in Pastoral symphony and inspired countless imitators LOL

Criminal Minds - AXN
AXN LatinAmerica called us to do the Promo of one of its primetime shows "Criminal Minds", which main characters are a team of profilers from de FBI that search into the criminal minds to predicts their next move.
When we first read the script from our friends from Sony, we realized it was quite a challenge! The idea was to build the body of one of the criminal minds with types and phrases simultaneously with the audio. Phrases that would cause most of the psychological traumas.
Bring the script to life we proposed to tattoo the typographic phrases on a person skin and we walked into the challenge of create a tie between the ANALOGOUS and the DIGITAL.
On one hand we hand painted the phrases with brushes to give them more expressiveness and realism. On the other hand we modeled the human been in 3D and we mapped the phases on him, specially on his face. Taking as reference a great audio work, that'd define the timing to develop and animate the phrases, and with a delicate edition work that intensify the chaotic rhythm by the end of the piece we manage to transmit part of the "Criminal Minds" chaos, full of interruptions and torments thoughts, full of internal voices that push him to commit the crimes.

AXN LatinAmerica called us to do the Promo of one of its primetime shows "Criminal Minds", which main characters are a team of profilers from de FBI that search into the criminal minds to predicts their next move.
When we first read the script from our friends from Sony, we realized it was quite a challenge! The idea was to build the body of one of the criminal minds with types and phrases simultaneously with the audio. Phrases that would cause most of the psychological traumas.
Bring the script to life we proposed to tattoo the typographic phrases on a person skin and we walked into the challenge of create a tie between the ANALOGOUS and the DIGITAL.
On one hand we hand painted the phrases with brushes to give them more expressiveness and realism. On the other hand we modeled the human been in 3D and we mapped the phases on him, specially on his face. Taking as reference a great audio work, that'd define the timing to develop and animate the phrases, and with a delicate edition work that intensify the chaotic rhythm by the end of the piece we manage to transmit part of the "Criminal Minds" chaos, full of interruptions and torments thoughts, full of internal voices that push him to commit the crimes.

Criminal Minds - AXN
AXN LatinAmerica called us to do the Promo of one of its primetime shows "Criminal Minds", which main characters are a team of profilers from de FBI that search into the criminal minds to predicts their next move.
When we first read the script from our friends from Sony, we realized it was quite a challenge! The idea was to build the body of one of the criminal minds with types and phrases simultaneously with the audio. Phrases that would cause most of the psychological traumas.
Bring the script to life we proposed to tattoo the typographic phrases on a person skin and we walked into the challenge of create a tie between the ANALOGOUS and the DIGITAL.
On one hand we hand painted the phrases with brushes to give them more expressiveness and realism. On the other hand we modeled the human been in 3D and we mapped the phases on him, specially on his face. Taking as reference a great audio work, that'd define the timing to develop and animate the phrases, and with a delicate edition work that intensify the chaotic rhythm by the end of the piece we manage to transmit part of the "Criminal Minds" chaos, full of interruptions and torments thoughts, full of internal voices that push him to commit the crimes.

Valentina Lisitsa (Ukrainian: Валентина Лисиця, translit. Valentina Lisitsya,) is a Ukrainian-born classical pianist. Lisitsa resides in North Carolina in the USA.[1][2] She is among the most frequently viewed pianists on YouTube. [3]
Biography[link]
Lisitsa was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1973. She started playing the piano at the age of three, performing her first solo recital at the age of four.[4] Despite her early disposition to music, her dream at that point was to become a professional chess player.[5] Lisitsa attended the Lysenko music school for Gifted Children and, later, Kiev Conservatory,[6] where she and her future husband, Alexei Kuznetsoff, studied under Dr. Ludmilla Tsvierko.[7] It was when Lisitsa met Kuznetsoff that she began to take music more seriously.[8] In 1991 they won the first prize in The Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition.[6][9] In the same year, they moved to the United States to further their careers as concert pianists. Their New York debut was at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in 1995.[7]
Lisitsa has performed in various venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Musikverein. Recently, she has been the pianist in recital engagements collaborating with violinist Hilary Hahn.[6] Her recording of the 4 sonatas for violin and piano by composer Charles Ives, made with Hahn, was released in October, 2011. Many of Lisitsa's performances, including Frédéric Chopin's Op. 10 and Op. 25 Etudes and Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata, can be viewed on YouTube.
Lisitsa has recorded 6 CDs for Audiofon Records, including two solo CDs, the other two being duets with husband Alexei Kuznetsoff, a Gold CD for CiscoMusic label with cellist DeRosa, a duet recital on VAI label with violinist Ida Haendel, DVDs of Frédéric Chopin's 24 Etudes, Schubert-Liszt Schwanengesang, and her most recent DVD titled Black and Pink.
Lisitsa was featured on the HORSE the band song "Rape Escape" from their 2009 album Desperate Living.
Lisitsa has recorded composer-specific album "projects" in the last three years, from Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Chopin, and Beethoven. Her Rachmaninoff and Liszt projects are still undergoing final mixing and distribution. [10]

Biography[link]
Valentina Igoshina began studying piano with her mother,[1] and first took lessons at home at the age of four. At the age of twelve she began attending the Moscow Central School of Music and became a student of Sergei Dorensky and Larissa Dedova at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.[2]
Igoshina has also served as a teacher of piano at the Peter Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. Between recitals and concerts, she currently divides her time between Moscow and Paris.[3]
Professional accomplishments[link]
In 1993, at age 14, she won first prize at the Artur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz, Poland.[4] In 1997, at age 18, she won first prize and a special award at the famed Rachmaninov International Piano Competition in Moscow.[5]

Igoshina has also competed in four other worldwide piano competitions:

Igoshina has been invited to play with many notable orchestras, among them being the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam with Markus Stenz conducting;[7] the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Aberdeen with Alexander Titov conducting;[7] on multiple occasions with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, United Kingdom with Sir Mark Elder conducting;[7] the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia with Markus Stenz conducting; the Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona with Josep Caballé Domenech conducting; on multiple occasions with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago in Chile, with Jan Latham-Koenig conducting; the London Philharmonic with Carl Davis conducting; the Macao Orchestra in Macao, China with Lu Jia conducting; the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra with Antoni Wit conducting; the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo with Josè Maria Florêncio conducting; and on multiple occasions with the Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Antoni Ros-Marba conducting. Igoshina has made live recordings on BBC Radio 3, ABC Classic FM, BBC Scotland, as well as the sound tracks for Tony Palmer's movies The Harvest of Sorrow (in collaboration with Valery Gergiev and Mikhail Pletnev)[9] and The Strange Case of Delphina Potocka. She played one of the leading roles in the latter film.[10]
In 2006 Warner Classics International produced an album entitled Valentina Igoshina, wherein Igoshina played works by Modest Mussorgsky and Robert Schumann. Included on the album were Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Schumann's Carnaval.
In 2008 Igoshina recorded a definitive work of the waltzes of Frédéric Chopin. The album, entitled Chopin: Complete Waltzes was chosen by Classic FM Magazine as its November, 2008 "Disc of the Month". It was produced by Lontano Music and distributed by Warner Classics International[11]
In October, 2010 Valentina Igoshina recorded Dmitri Shostakovich's First and Second Piano Concertos with the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss-am-Rhein (near Düsseldorf), and the work is distributed by Warner Classics International. Also in 2010, she appeared in another of Tony Palmer's productions, entitled Valentina Igoshina Plays Chopin.
Many of Igoshina's performances can be seen on YouTube, including Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu and Liszt's Liebesträume.
