Kyushu island - Japan
Kyūshū (九州, Nine Provinces?)[2] or Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. Its alternate ancient names include Kyūkoku (九国 Nine States), Chinzei (鎮西 West of the Pacified Area), and Tsukushi-no-shima (筑紫島 Island of Tsukushi). The historical regional name Saikaidō (西海道 West Sea Circuit) referred to Kyūshū and its surrounding islands.
Kyūshū has a population of 13,231,995 (2006) and covers 35,640 square kilometres (13,760 sq miGeography
The island is mountainous, and Japan's most active volcano, Mt Aso at 1,591 metres (5,220 ft), is on Kyūshū. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. The most famous of these are in Beppu, on the east shore, and around Mt. Aso, in central Kyūshū.
The name Kyūshū comes from the nine ancient provinces of Saikaidō situated on the island: Chikuzen, Chikugo, Hizen, Higo, Buzen, Bungo, Hyūga, Osumi, and Satsuma.
Today's Kyūshū Region (九州地方 kyūshū-chihō) is a politically defined region that consists of the seven prefectures on the island of Kyūshū and also Okinawa Prefecture to the south:
* Northern Kyushu
o Fukuoka Prefecture
o Saga Prefecture
o Kumamoto Prefecture
o Nagasaki Prefecture
o Ōita Prefecture
* Kagoshima Prefecture
* Miyazaki Prefecture
* Okinawa Prefecture
The world's 37th largest island by area, Kyūshū is smaller than Spitsbergen but larger than New Britain and Taiwan. By population, it ranks 13th, having fewer inhabitants than Borneo or Sulawesi, but more than Salsette or Cuba.

KI: Michael Levin
I first became aware of Michael Levin's photographs in 2010. His photographs of everyday places and common subjects are transformed into something much more when he views them through his lens...absolutely stunning! Being that a large majority of Michael's work is done in Japan, I instantly had a connection to it as I too have a bond with Japan and have traveled and documented the landscape extensively in my own way. After watching my film Hayaku (http://vimeo.com/12112529) Michael contacted me regarding a project he was working on and felt it might be of interest to me. He told me that he really appreciated my work and recognized the dedication and effort that went into it. I agreed to go on a trip with him to Japan and work on his project. But for me, there was a greater opportunity at hand. We had several conversations and I gave him some ideas about expanding the project and he really took to it. A month later and we were in Japan having beers and sushi.
I wanted to document Michael at work, in Japan, in a way that hasn't really been explored with photographers. I told Michael of my idea to make an artistic representation of his experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun - to show him in his working environment in a way that complimented his work. Not to explain it with words, but to feel it through the flow of the film. I wanted to show the process, the journey, the adventure in a way that would give the viewer an emotional connection to Michael and his photography.
The final result is something that I think is truly original… something that showcases who Michael is, and more importantly, what his work is all about. This film is a collaboration between Michael and I and our love for photography, film, Japan and adventure. This is a subject that Michael and I are continuing to explore as we plan more trips together, more films and more adventures.
I hope you enjoy!
**Michael will be conducting a photography workshop in Brighton, UK. this September.

Kyushu Explorer: Hanuted Kyushu
This is an excerpt from a 10 minute travel show I did for AFN Sasebo. Working with a partner we researched local Japanese ghost stories and the locations surrounding them. The excerpt revolves around the legend of Okiku. I directed the actors. This was my first attempt a green screen work. I wrote and voiced the script. The still images were scanned in and I manipulated them using Boris Red. The video I edited with Avid.
