NCIC Vice Chair Mary Onyango Dead
The nation has once again been plunged into mourning. Glowing tributes are being paid to a woman who has been at the forefront in campaigning for health rights, peaceful co-existence and tolerance among different communities. "colorful, sweet, determined" are just but some of the words those who knew Mary Onyango, the departed Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Intergration Commission, used to describe her. She passed on early this morning after a twelve - year battle with cancer at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. President Mwai Kibaki led a host of other leaders in mourning the death of the commissioner whom he described as a peace crusader. Willis Raburu reports on the life and times of Mary Onyango

Extension of NCIC Term
The stage is set for a showdown in Parliament as members of the August House prepare to debate a motion seeking to extend the tenure of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) by 12 months. The Commission's term expires on 7th next month, and the mover of the motion, nominated MP Mohamed Affey believes the process of reconstituting the Commission could be marred by competing political interests, ahead of next year's general election. But as Francis Gachuri reports, some MPs insist that Dr Mzalendo Kibunjia and his team have not done enough to deserve an extended mandate.

NCIC Diversity Conference
Politicians have been put on the spot for fueling tribal conflicts in the country for personal political gains. The harsh verdict was issued at the launch of a two day peoples conference on diversity, ethnicity and race hosted by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission. Speakers at the conference noted with concern utterances by certain politicians ahead of the general election which they termed as threatening to national cohesion. Prime Minister Raila Odinga who oficially openned the conference called for harsh punishment to be meted on those who killed kenyans in the 2007-2008 post election violence.

NCIC Warns Artistes Against Hate Speech
In a bid to stop hate speech as the country gears up for elections next year, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has warned that it will take stern action against musicians and media stations airing inciting songs. The Commission has said that official translations of 3 songs in contention are being done and that they will take legal action them after the review of the song is done. The Commission says it is currently reviewing 3 songs by Kamande Wa Kioi, Muigai wa Njoroge and John Demethew alleged to be bordering on hate speech. And in a move to ensure the forthcoming elections are held in a peaceful atmosphere, NCIC in partnering with political parties has organized a 3-day workshop in Naivasha to enlighten them on hate speech during campaigns. The workshop will be held between 1st and 3rd July this year in Naivasha. The workshop will see about 50 representatives from political parties attend. The Commission was set up after the highly contested 2007 Presidential elections that resulted to tribal crashes leaving at least 1300 people dead and almost half a million others displaced. The Mzalendo Kibunjia led Commission has taken the step after a public outcry over music being used by musicians to campaign for their favourite candidates while allegedly spreading hate against other presidential contestants. In the 2007/08 post poll chaos, vernacular radio stations and artistes were blamed for inciting communities against each other. The Commission is ...

NCIC on Raila Assassination Plot
Gem Member Of Parliament Jakoyo Midiwo has recorded a statement with the criminal investigations department over his weekend claim that a plan had been hatched to eliminate Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Midiwo, who is also the parliamentary joint chief whip, was grilled by the detectives even as the national cohesion and integration commission censured the mp, and asked him to refrain from making sensational utterances that could stoke friction in the country. But, as Willis Raburu now reports, Midiwo insists he was ready to defend his claim even in a court of law.

NCIC Warns Against Intolerance
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission is raising the red flag over the rising level of intolerance in the country. In remarks echoed by the police, the Commission is now warning against xenophobic tendencies against Kenyans of Somali origin, which it says have been on the rise especially after Kenya's onslaught against the Al Shabaab began almost three weeks ago. NCIC has also labelled Kisumu County as the apex of intolerance in the country, promising to engage authorities to bring to book those who attacked presidential aspirant Raphael Tuju's convoy in Kondele on Friday.

NCIC Anti-Ethnicity Conference
A conference on national cohesion took off in earnest Monday, with Kenyan political leaders and the public in general blamed for further entrenching ethnic divisions that often lead to tribal animosity and flare-ups. Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga said Kenya lacks true nationals who can consistently think and do things in a manner devoid of the usual ethnic point of view. The conference also said the unfair distribution of the national cake in the past, may have been a catalyst of the post election violence that rocked the country after the disputed 2007 polls. And as a Francis Gachuri report, the ultimate question each Kenyan is confronted with, is, are you a nationalist or tribalist?

NCIC Tension Concerns
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has expressed concerns over rising ethnic tension in the country as a result of the ongoing discussion on the summons that were issued by the International Criminal Court against 6 post election violence suspects. NCIC chairman Dr Mzalendo Kibunjia said that healing and reconciliation efforts had yet to bear fruits in Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Central Provinces, and the situation could be aggravated by the raging ICC debate. According to the commission, the biggest threat to the rule of law is the unhealthy mix of politics with judicial processes, as is the case in the current debate on the ICC cases.

NCIC investigates three vernacular musicians
Three songs sang in the Kikuyu language are on the radar of the National Cohesion And Integration Commission. The songs have been flagged as inciting and the commission is investigating possible hate speech in the songs. The commission is awaiting an official copy of the translation before deciding on the next course of action and as NTV's Sheila Sendeyo reports, lyrics of the song have angered even those whose views the singers purport to represent.
