Focus Fusion: The Fastest Route to Cheap, Clean Energy
Google Tech Talks
October, 3 2007
ABSTRACT
To bring the whole of humanity up to the living standards of the developed world requires a new source of energy that is clean, inexhaustible and much cheaper than any existing source -- fossil, nuclear, solar or wind. Fusion with hydrogen-boron fuel, which allows direct conversion of fusion energy to electricity, can be that source. It could cut energy costs more than ten-fold. It produces no radioactive waste and would be safe enough to situate in residential neighborhoods.
Of the three approaches to achieving hydrogen-boron fusion, focus fusion, using the dense plasma focus device, has experimentally achieved conditions that are closest to those needed for net power generation. It is the only approach that can utilize the high magnetic field effect, which reduces the cooling of plasma by x-rays, helping to achieve the multi-billion-degree temperatures needed for fusion. A currently-planned three-year, $2 million experiment, if funded, can demonstrate the scientific feasibility of focus fusion.
This presentation will review the history and status of focus fusion and briefly compare it to the two competing approaches, Field Reversed Configuration (recently funded by Paul Allen) and Inertial Electrostatic Confinement, championed by Dr. Robert Bussard, a recent Google Tech Talk speaker.

Featuring on both Markus Schulz's Los Angeles '12 and Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance 2012 compilations is quite an achievement. But for talented Ukranian Omnia, it is just the latest step in his ascending career as a producer, and in parallel, projects Smart Apes member DJ Ira to the forefront. They combine to present "The Fusion".
Omnia is no stranger to Coldharbour followers, with his remix of Markus Schulz's seminal Surreal in 2011 amassing a plethora of plaudits. Together with The Blizzard, he has been part of some of the most well received melodic tracks in recent years, such as "My Inner Island", and the beautiful "Closer" which featured the wonderful vocals of Susana. Ira's work as Smart Apes has also struck a chord with Global DJ Broadcast, notably with their track "Perfect".
Since the turn of the year, very few tracks have garnered as much attention as The Fusion. Not just with its two compilation berths, the track has featured extensively in both Markus and Armin's livesets, from the release parties at Avalon in Los Angles and the Global DJ Broadcast World Tour from the Guvernment in Toronto, to the opening night of the A State of Trance 550 celebrations in London and a proud moment for Omnia himself playing in front of his fellow country members in Kiev.
As well as the original, Markus kindly supplies his own reconstruction of the track, crafted specifically for the Los Angeles '12 compilation.
Many are citing the track as a track of the year contender already. And with heavyweight support behind it, The Fusion looks set to explode further.

How will a fusion power plant work?
A school class in 2100: The futuristic lesson is backed up with documentary photos and animations and gives the viewer an entertaining survey of the principles, development and status of fusion research. Like the sun, a fusion power plant is to derive energy from fusion of atomic nuclei. To ignite the fusion fire one has to succeed in confining the fuel, a hydrogen plasma, in magnetic fields and heating it to temperatures of over 100 million degrees. The next step in world-wide fusion research on the way to this almost inexhaustible energy source is the ITER international test reactor.

FUSION FESTIVAL 2012 ♫♪ Фузион ♫♪ --- Zusammenschnitt

Plasma Fusion -- hoax or breakthrough reality?
A group of scientists in New Jersey claim to have made a breakthrough that would bring mankind closer to creating fusion energy on Earth -- a type of energy that the sun has been producing for billions of years. Traditionally considered a Holy Grail of science -- could plasma fusion finally become a reality? RT's Anastasia Churkina was the first reporter to access the laboratory.

Consider the earth and a rocket ship which are bound together by gravity. If it takes work or energy to pull them apart, then the binding energy is the amount of energy it takes to completely separate them. Similarly the binding energy in a nucleus is the amount of energy it takes to completely separate the protons and neutrons, (collectively called nucleons.)
There are two forces acting inside the nucleus of atoms. The nuclear force -- a residuum of the strong force that holds quarks together -- is pulling the neutrons and protons together -- and the electric charge on the protons is pushing them apart. The strong force is a lot stronger than the electric force at short ranges up to two and a half times the proton diameter, but at larger distances the electric force dominates.
This increase in binding energy continues until we get to iron and nickel where the nucleus has about 60 nucleons in it. At this point, the nucleus has a radius more than two and a half nucleons wide, which you remember is the range at which the repulsive ElectroMagnetic Force begins to dominate.. . So as we add nucleons past this point the electric force trying to tear the nucleus apart starts winning and each added nucleon is a little less-tightly bound.

Taylor Wilson: Yup, I built a nuclear fusion reactor
http://www.ted.com Taylor Wilson believes nuclear fusion is a solution to our future energy needs, and that kids can change the world. And he knows something about both of those: When he was 14, he built a working fusion reactor in his parents' garage. Now 17, he takes the TED stage to tell (the short version of) his story.

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor: What Fusion Wanted To Be
Google Tech Talks
November 18, 2008
ABSTRACT
Electrical power is, and will increasingly become, the desired form of energy for its convenience, safety, flexibility and applicability. Even future transportation embraces electric cars, trains, and chemical fuel production (jet fuel, hydrogen, etc.) based upon an abundant electrical supply. Although existing energy sources can and should be expanded where practical, no one source has shown to be practical to rapidly fulfill the world's energy requirements effectively. Presently there is an existing source of energy ideally suited to electrical energy production that is not being exploited anywhere in the world today, although its existence and practicality has been know since the earliest days of nuclear science. Thorium is the third source of fission energy and the LFTR is the idealized mechanism to turn this resource into electrical energy. Enough safe, clean energy, globally sustainable for 1000's of years at US standards.
This talk is aimed at explaining this thorium energy resource from fundamental physics to today's practical applications. The presentation is sufficient for the non-scientist to grasp the whole subject, but will be intriguing to even classically trained nuclear engineers. By providing the historical context in which the technology was discovered and later developed into a power reactor, the story of thorium's disappearance as an energy source is revealed. But times have changed, and today, thorium energy can be safely exploited in a completely new form of nuclear reactor.
The LFTR is unique, having a hot liquid core thus eliminating fuel fabrication costs and the need for a large reactor. It cannot have a nuclear meltdown and is so safe that typical control rods are not required at all. This design topples all the conventional arguments against conventional energy sources in such areas as:
* Waste Production
* Safety
* Proliferation
* Capital Costs and Location
* Environmental Impact
* Social Acceptance
* Flexibility
* Grid Infrastructure
* Efficiency
Should America take this step toward a New Era in Nuclear Energy Production? Hear the case for "The Electricity Rock" and then decide.
