Bishop Barron on “Silence” [Spoilers]
The much-anticipated “Silence”, based upon the Shusaku Endo novel of the same name, is a worthy addition to the Scorsese oeuvre. It is marked by gorgeous cinematography, outstanding performances from both lead and supporting actors, a gripping narrative, and enough thematic complexity to keep you thinking for the foreseeable future. However, the "three cheers" most inspired by the film are not for the Hollywood greats but for the martyrs, crucified by the seaside. Visit http://www.wordonfire.org to learn more!

Panel Discussion on the movie "Silence," a film by Martin Scorsese
From: March 24, 2017
Film Screening - Martin Scorsese’s epic movie "Silence" follows two seventeenth-century Jesuit missionaries as they travel from Portugal to Japan in search of their missing mentor, who is believed to have rejected Christ under torture. Based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 award-winning novel, Scorsese’s film delves deeply into the nature of culture, faith, and mercy.
A panel of international scholars will discuss the film and its central themes. The panel will include Richard Blake, S.J., a scholar of Jesuit Spirituality and Catholicism in cinema, Robert Maryks, a scholar of Jesuits in film, and Hitomi Omata Rappo, a scholar of Jesuit missionaries in Japan, who will be joined by others for a lively discussion.
