Jeffrey Toobin Scolds WikiLeaks Spokesman for Invoking Nuremberg in NSA Debate
The question of whether Edward Snowden should receive clemency or not (it's a moot point; the government would never consider offering it, and if it did it might come with some strings attached) has been lingering in the minds of many a pundit these days, and during a debate Thursday on CNN about this topic, WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson defended Snowden and invoked the "Nuremberg principles" of doing the right thing in the name of a greater ideal. This really set off Jeffrey Toobin, who accused him of comparing the NSA to the Nazis. Hrafnsson argued that Snowden did nothing wrong and welcomed the calls for granting his clemency. "It is justifiable for whistleblowers to break the laws when it serves higher ideals. That is the Nuremberg principles that we should abide by. We have been saying that for years, and now finally The New York Times agrees with us." He continued on to say that Snowden deserves a "hero's welcome." When it was Toobin's turn to weigh in, he was stunned that Hrafnsson would make that kind of comparison. "[He's] implicitly comparing the actions of the United States here to the Nazis, who, of course, were only following orders like the NSA. That is a grotesque and absurd comparison, and it just shows how crazy these people are... who are supporting Snowden."- published: 03 Jan 2014

UN must act against Takfiris in Syria:Analyst
The Syrian government is entitled to ask the UN Security Council to take action regarding the war crimes committed by the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in Syria, an international lawyer tells Press TV. "A complaint should be brought to the [UN] Security Council that war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Nuremberg principles are clearly occurring and those can be brought by the government of Syria before the Security Council at this time on the basis of the evidence that I have seen," said Alfred Lambremont Webre in a Friday interview with Press TV. Principle VI of the Nuremburg principles of the International Law Commission of the UN determines a set of guidelines for defining instances of war crime. Lambremont Webre pointed to the extensive evidence of the killing of hostages, the plundering of public or private property and the unjustified destruction of cities, towns or villages in Syria as some instances of war crimes by the Takfiri militants. Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report on Friday saying the Takfiri militants in Syria killed 190 civilians and held over 200 others hostage in the country's western province of Latakia in August alone. The 105-page report was compiled based upon on-site investigation and interviews with 35 people, including the survivors of the attacks. According to the report, in some cases, the extremists executed or gunned down entire families. A vast majority of the hostages are also women and children. Since the outbreak of the turmoil in Syria in March 2011, several video clips have been released showing the grisly crimes perpetrated by the foreign-sponsored terrorists against innocent civilians in the country. A very large number of the militants in the Arab country are reportedly foreign nationals.- published: 11 Oct 2013

US strike against Syria war crime under UN Charter: Legal expert
US strike against Syria war crime under UN Charter: Legal expert
Any US strike against Syria is considered a war crime under the UN Charter against aggressive war, an international lawyer tells Press TV. "Any attack by the United States upon Syria would be a violation of the UN Charter prohibition against aggressive war, which is the more serious [form] of war crimes," said Alfred Lambremont Webre in a Tuesday interview. He argued that according to the Nuremberg principles, which set the guideline for the definition of war crimes, the US "is starting an aggressive war against another nation." Webre described US President Barack Obama's decision to seek a congressional authorization for an attack against Syria as an attempt to "get some political cover and some legal cover behind him." "Under international law, the US Congress cannot sanction or provide legal cover to any attack by the US," the legal expert noted. The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21. On Saturday, Obama said he would seek a congressional authorization for an attack against Syria as Washington "cannot and will not turn a blind eye" to an alleged chemical attack in the Arab state. The Obama administration has, however, said it "has the right" to attack Syria even if the Congress does not approve the measure. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.- published: 04 Sep 2013
