Oak Island

Oak Island is a 57-hectare (140-acre) privately owned island in Lunenburg County on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. The tree-covered island is one of about 360 small islands in Mahone Bay and rises to a maximum of 11 metres (36 feet) above sea level. The island is located 200 metres (660 feet) from shore and connected to the mainland by a causeway and gate.

The island is best known as the site of various theories about possible buried treasure or historical artifacts, and the resulting centuries of ongoing expensive exploration, and is the subject of the History Channel's series The Curse of Oak Island.

Lagina

Coordinates: 37°22′43″N 28°02′22″E / 37.378564°N 28.039427°E / 37.378564; 28.039427 Lagina (Greek: Λαγίνα) is an ancient cult site of important archaeological and tourist value dating from the Carian period and extended under the Seleucid kings that is situated in southwestern Turkey (adjacent to Turgut, a municipality in the Muğla Province) and which is famous for its Hekate Sanctuary. The site is situated at 9 kilometers distance from the Yatağan-Milas highway, served by an asphalt road bifurcating shortly after the Yatağan Thermal Power Plant when coming from Yatağan.

The small town of Turgut itself was until recently named Leyne, a name that is still used among the locals and in the region, thus echoing its name in antiquity.

Recent studies have shown that the site had been inhabited and/or employed in an uninterrupted manner during a time span stretching back to the Bronze Age. Seleucid kings conducted a considerable reconstruction effort in the sacred ground of Lagina and transformed it into a foremost religious center of its time, with the nearby (at a distance of 11 kilometers) site of Stratonikeia becoming the administrative center. The two sites (Lagina and Stratonkeia) were connected to each other in antiquity by a holy path.

The Curse of Singapore Sling

The Curse of Singapore Sling (also known simply as The Curse Of) is the first studio album by the Icelandic neo-psychedelia band Singapore Sling. It was released in August 2002 by record label Hitt.

Background

An 8-track demo version of the opening track, "Overdriver", was made available online on the Iceland Airwaves music festival website in 2001. The MP3 was titled "Overdrive".

The closing track, "Dirty Water", was a cover of the 1966 hit single by garage rock band The Standells.

Edda (Hitt Records), the now-defunct Icelandic label, produced a music video for "Listen". No single was actually released. The black-and-white clip was directed by Arni Thor Jonsson from the Reykjavík studio Sagofilm and was released in Iceland on 22 October 2002. It shows girls from a volleyball league wearing bikinis and dancing.

Release

The album was released in August 2002 on CD by Hitt Records, and was licensed and released in the United States a year later by the independent label Stinky Records.

The Curse of Oak Island is a reality television series that premiered in the Canada on the History Channel on January 5, 2014. The show details the efforts of brothers Marty and Rick Lagina from Michigan in their attempt to solve the 220-year-old Oak Island mystery. Using modern technology and a global consultancy of experts, they seek the treasure or historical artifacts believed to be buried on Oak Island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Overview

The Curse of Oak Island follows brothers Marty and Rick Lagina, originally from Kingsford, Michigan, through their efforts to find the speculated treasure or historical artifacts believed to be on Oak Island. The series discusses the history of the island, recent discoveries, theories, and the sometimes-fatal prior attempts to investigate the site. Areas of interest include the "Money Pit", Borehole 10-x, and the "Swamp". They approach their investigation in three different ways in season 3.

Background

The Lagina brothers became fascinated with the island after reading the January 1965 issue of Reader's Digest magazine that features an article on the Restall family's work to investigate the so-called "Money Pit". Marty and his brother Rick obtained a controlling interest in Oak Island Tours, which reportedly owns most of the island. The brothers were later approached by Prometheus Entertainment to do a reality show. Rick and Marty have engaged the assistance of father-and-son Dan and Dave Blankenship, permanent residents of the island who have likewise been searching for treasure since the 1960s.
