Shotgun shack redux: mortgage-free in 320 square feet
Two years ago, Debra and her family lived in a nearly 2000 square foot home on an acre and a half of land. Then her husband lost his job and they began to work 4 jobs between them to pay the mortgage, until one day they remembered they had a choice. Before having their son, Debra and her husband Gary had spent 9 years living in very tiny homes in South America. Living small hadn't felt like a sacrifice, but a way to stay focused on what is important. They decided they wanted to get back to that. They stopped working so hard, sold or gave away all of their extra stuff and began looking for the perfect tiny home. Debra had always liked the Mississippi shotgun style homes, and one day, while browsing craigslist, they noticed an ad for a local Arkansas company custom building tiny homes for a price that could mean an end to house payments. Six weeks and $15000 later they had their own fully paid-off dwelling. Today, Debra, her husband and 13-year-old son live in a 320-square foot home that is not a sacrifice, but exactly what they need. Home Delivery Walkthrough: Digitally Fabricated Housing for New Orleans
Learn more at: moma.org Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling is both a survey of the past, present and future of the prefabricated home and a building project on the Museum's vacant west lot. Not since the mid-century House in the Garden series has MoMA built occupiable model buildings to demonstrate contemporary issues to the public. The fives homes erected on the vacant west lot are designed by Kieran Timberlake Associates (Philadelphia); Jeremy Edmiston and Douglas Gauthier (New York); Horden Cherry Lee Architects / Haack + Höpfner Architects (London/Munich); Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning / Associate Professor Lawrence Sass (Cambridge); and Oskar Leo Kaufmann (Dornbirn, Austria). The exhibition, and its accompanying Web site (www.moma.org/homedelivery), display the process of architectural design and production in equal measure with the actual end result.

A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.

B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil

Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.

B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.

The Theatre Bizarre TRAILER
SEVERIN FILMS RELEASES FIRST TRAILER FOR HORROR ANTHOLOGY CO-PRODUCTION ‘THE THEATRE BIZARRE’ IN ANTICIPATION OF WORLD PREMIERE IN MONTREAL
Modern tribute to Grand Guignol features cult film icon Udo Kier and films by directors Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten Tom Savini & Richard Stanley
Los Angeles, CA --- Thursday July 7, 2011 --- Severin Films today announced the release of the first official theatrical trailer for the eagerly anticipated feature THE THEATRE BIZARRE - a modern horror omnibus inspired by the over-the-top shocks of Paris’ early 20th century ‘Theatre du Grand Guignol’ - which will have its Gala World Premiere at the 2011 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 16th at 9:20pm. THE THEATRE BIZARRE features horror icon and Hollywood character staple Udo Kier (BLOOD FOR DRACULA, SUSPIRIA, MELANCHOLIA) as the master of ceremonies in the framing story, set in a sinister old theatre, of six films by “horror’s most adventurous minds,” (Fangoria). THE THEATRE BIZARRE will also have its European Premiere at London’s acclaimed FrightFest on opening night, August 25th. The trailer can be seen here: http://vimeo.com/26085661 and fans can connect with THE THEATRE BIZARRE on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/thetheatrebizarre.
The project’s seven filmmakers, who were granted total creative freedom, have all made at least one modestly budgeted and internationally acclaimed movie in the horror field. The films of Douglas Buck include the 2003 Sitges sensation FAMILY PORTRAITS: A TRILOGY OF AMERICA and the recent remake of Brian DePalma’s SISTERS. Buddy Giovinazzo exploded onto the genre scene with 1986’s COMBAT SHOCK and went on to write and direct such features as the Tim Roth-starrer NO WAY HOME and last year’s acclaimed ensemble drama LIFE IS HOT IN CRACKTOWN (adapted from his novel), as well as numerous works for German television. UK native David Gregory is the industry’s foremost documentarian of horror films on DVD, and his 2008 feature debut PLAGUE TOWN was hailed as “a nightmare captured on celluloid” by Fangoria. In addition to writing and directing SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY and LA BELLE BÊTE, Karim Hussain is also an accomplished cinematographer whose features include HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. Arguably horror’s best-known special effects wizard for his landmark work on classics that include the original FRIDAY THE 13TH and DAWN OF THE DEAD – as well as a popular actor in such films as FROM DUSK TIL DAWN and MACHETE – Tom Savini directed the 1990 remake of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. South African born Richard Stanley is one of the genre’s most distinctive talents, whose visionary cult classics include HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL. THE THEATRE BIZARRE marks his triumphant return to horror for the first time in 18 years. Directing Kier in the film’s framing segments, writer/director Jeremy Kasten was the filmmaker behind the very Guignol-esque remake of Herschel Gordon Lewis’ THE WIZARD OF GORE.
“The idea for THE THEATRE BIZARRE was hatched when I was editing a DVD featurette for the 1990 art-house portmanteau ARIA, directed by Jean Luc Godard, Robert Altman, Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell and others,” explains producer and Severin Films CEO David Gregory. “Horror anthologies have a rich history dating back to the silent era, and include classics like DEAD OF NIGHT, BLACK SABBATH, SPIRITS OF THE DEAD, THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, CREEPSHOW and more. I felt that the notion of giving filmmakers a general concept, the same budget and complete creative control would lend itself perfectly to a modern horror film. In my opinion, there is no other genre where unleashing the unrestrained creative ideas of filmmakers could redeem such an outlandish array of stories and images.”
Severin Films, founded in 2006 with offices in Los Angeles and London, has been called “well on its way to becoming the greatest indie label of all time” by BlogCritics.org. Their DVD and Blu-ray releases include Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE, Jess Franco’s MACUMBA SEXUAL and BLOODY MOON, Walerian Borowczyk’s IMMORAL WOMEN, the unrated Director’s Cut of Just Jaeckin’s GWENDOLINE, Richard Stanley’s restored HARDWARE, Enzo Castellari’s original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, Oscar®-nominee Patrice Leconte’s THE HAIRDRESSER’S HUSBAND, Don Sharp’s PSYCHOMANIA and Roman Polanski’s WHAT? Severin’s upcoming HD restorations include Richard Rush’s Academy Award® Nominated THE STUNT MAN, Ted Post’s THE BABY, Eugenio Martín’s HORROR EXPRESS and Peter Duffell’s THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD. The company’s theatrical releases include BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR, and DEVOLVED.

Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder Video Review - 120 Frames Per Second
I took a few hours today to put this together. I hope it helps someone out there make a decision on buying a video camera.
I just got a new Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder that I will use to create video blogs for my website. My full blog is located at http://www.tomguilmette.com.
I plan on bringing this camera to television and film jobs I work to shoot behind the scenes. This camera even has a mic input so I can use a wireless or shotgun.
I forgot to mention in the review that this is a tapeless AVCHD camera. It has a 60GB hard drive built in and you have the option of using Sony memory stick Duo cards instead.
Great little camera and it only costs $700. I recommend the $130 wide angle conversion lens and the $160 underwater housing. A complete kit for under $1000! This is the same camera that Bear Grylls (Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild) uses as a POV.
I tried to shoot a short nature film using the "smooth slow recording" feature on the SR11. This is kinda like the "overcranking" feature on the EX1. The SR11 is able to shoot 120 frames per second for a 3 second burst. The resolution is not very good, but not horrible. Watch this video review and see for yourself.
My on-camera was shot with the PMW-EX1 and the Letus Extreme with a 50mm f1.4 Nikon film lens.
Sorry about the "Canadian Goose" story, but I shot it to show you how the camera looks at full 1080 60i. Someone, somewhere is feasting on goose meat.
By the way, today was my day off and I did not feel like getting dressed up for this.
