Margot Adler (born April 16, 1946) is an author, journalist, lecturer, Wiccan priestess^[1] and radio journalist and correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR).^[2]

Early life[link]

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Adler grew up mostly in New York City. Her grandfather, Alfred Adler, was a noted Austrian Jewish psychotherapist, collaborator with Sigmund Freud and the founder of the school of individual psychology.

Education[link]

Adler received a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York in 1970. She was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1982.^[3]

Journalism and radio[link]

Adler first worked for WBAI, FM 99.5, the Pacifica Radio outlet in New York City. She created the talk shows Hour of the Wolf in 1972 (still on the air as hosted by Jim Freund) and later Unstuck in Time.

Adler joined NPR in 1979 as a general assignment reporter, after spending a year as an NPR freelance reporter covering New York City, and has since worked on a great many pieces dealing with subjects as diverse as the death penalty, the right to die movement, the response to the war in Kosovo, computer gaming, the drug ecstasy, geek culture, children and technology, and Pokémon. Since 9/11, she has focused much of her work on stories exploring the human factors in New York City, from the loss of loved ones, homes and jobs, to work in the relief effort. She was the host of Justice Talking up until the show ceased production on July 3, 2008. She is a regular voice on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.^[3] She is also co-producer of an award-winning radio drama, War Day.^[2]

Neopaganism[link]

Adler authored Drawing Down the Moon,^[4] a 1979 book about Neopaganism which was revised in 2006.^[5] The book is considered a watershed in American Neopagan circles, as it provided the first comprehensive look at modern nature-based religions in the US. For many years it was the only introductory work about the American Neopagan communities. Her second book, Heretic's Heart: A Journey Through Spirit and Revolution, was published by Beacon Press in 1997. Adler is a Wiccan priestess in the Gardnerian tradition, an elder in the Covenant of the Goddess,^[1] and she also participates in the Unitarian Universalist faith community.^[1]

Jeffrey Ross Toobin^[1] (born May 21, 1960) is an American lawyer, author, and legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker.^[2]

Early life and education[link]

Toobin was born in New York City, New York.,^[3] the son of former ABC News and CBS News correspondent Marlene Sanders, and news broadcasting producer Jerome Toobin. He attended Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School, in New York City and attended Harvard College where he covered sports for The Harvard Crimson, using the column name "Inner Toobin." He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982 and earned a Truman Scholarship. He is also a 1986 magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Career[link]

Toobin began freelancing for The New Republic as a law student. He went on to become a law clerk to a federal judge and work as an associate counsel to Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh during the Iran-Contra affair and Oliver North's criminal trial, before becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn.^[4] He then took up his post in 1993 at The New Yorker, and became the first television legal analyst in 1994, at ABC.

He currently is a staff writer at The New Yorker, a senior analyst for CNN since 2002, and the author of five books. Toobin's latest book, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, has received awards from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.^[5]

In 1994, Toobin broke the story in The New Yorker that the O. J. Simpson legal team planned on accusing Mark Furhman of planting evidence and playing "the race card."^[5] In 2003, he secured the first interview with Martha Stewart in regards to the charges against her for insider trading.^[6]

Toobin has provided broadcast legal analysis on many high-profile cases, including Michael Jackson, the O.J. Simpson civil trial and the Starr investigation of President Clinton. He received a 2000 Emmy Award for his coverage of the Elián González custody saga.

Toobin is a longtime friend of Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan, having met her while the two were students at Harvard Law School.^[7] He has described Chief Justice John Roberts as "very, very conservative."^[8] Regarding Justice Clarence Thomas, Toobin has said that Thomas' legal views were "highly unusual and extreme", called him "a nut," and said that he was "furious all the time."^{[9] [10]}

In March 2009, Politico revealed that Toobin was a member of the private discussion group JournoList, where "several hundred left-leaning bloggers, political reporters, magazine writers, policy wonks and academics" "talked stories and compared notes."^[11][12]

In 1986, Toobin married Amy McIntosh. They have two children.
