Can US Learn from German Economy?
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is currently in Washington DC where she'll receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama as the White House hosts a state dinner. But maybe what Obama should really be doing is ask Merkel, how it is that Germany's economy, the 4th largest in the world, is recovering so well from the recession. So what can we learn, from Germany? The Atlantic Derek Thompson explains.

Hamburg in Germany - The most beautiful city in the world
Amazing ! Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany (after Berlin) and the eighth-largest city in the European Union. The city is home to approximately 1.8 million people, while the Hamburg Metropolitan Region (including parts of the neighboring Federal States of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein) has more than 4.3 million inhabitants. The port of Hamburg is the second-largest port in Europe (after that of Rotterdam), and the ninth-largest in the world.-------- Hamburg's official name is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (German: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg). It makes reference to Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, and also to the fact that Hamburg is a city-state and one of the sixteen States of Germany.------ Hamburg is a major transportation hub in Northern Germany. It has become a media and industrial center, with factories such as Airbus, Blohm + Voss and Aurubis. The radio and television broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk and publishers such as Gruner + Jahr and Spiegel-Verlag represent the important media industry in Hamburg. In total there are more than 120000 enterprises. The city is a major tourist destination both for domestic and overseas visitors, receiving about 7.7 million overnight stays in 2008.

The Rise and Fall of Austria or Habsburg Empire / Österreich
Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 to 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburgs made Austria a great power in 1477, when they inherited much of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Soon afterwards they inherited many more lands by their marriage policies. During the 16th century, the Habsburgs ruled over large parts of Europe. Charles V reigned over perhaps a quarter of the European population (not to speak of his enormous American colonial empire). The centuries afterwards Austria remained a great power until World War I, when the nationalistic thoughts in Europe finally divided the old empire into many small states. It's important to put in mind that Austria has always been a "part" of Germany until the 19th century. Indeed, the German Empire didn't exist until 1871, but the Germans (Austrians included) always realized they shared a same language and culture, and the medieval Holy Roman Empire actually was more or less a German state until it fell apart in the fatal 13th century. Since 1452, the Habsburgs were (with one short exception) the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, which was by now virtually a very loose confederation of states. However, the position of the Holy Roman Emperor gave the Habsburgs privileges and some sort of loyalty from the German princes, although monarchs like the Prussian kings didn't care. The Austrians were finally abandoned outside ...

German Shepherd leads trooper to explosion site, injured owner
www.germanshepherdworld.org ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska State Troopers are presenting a special award to Buddy, a German Shepherd that led authorities to a fire at his owners' property near Willow. Buddy will receive the engraved silver-plated dog bowl Friday afternoon in Anchorage. Troopers say Buddy and his owner, 23-year-old Ben Heinrichs, were in the family workshop on the Caswell Lakes property April 4 when a heater ignited chemicals . Heinrichs, who sustained minor flash burns on his face, dashed out as the fire grew. He then told Buddy "we need to get help." The dog took off and eventually found a trooper responding to a call about the fire. Buddy led the officer through winding back roads to the house and the trooper guided firefighters to the scene. The workshop was destroyed, but only some window trim on the house was damaged. www.germanshepherdworld.org

Worldwide City Guide Berlin
Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city. The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's seven hundred and fiftieth anniversary, a popular area with 'new' mediaeval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church. We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Gate leads to the Russian colony of Alexandrowka and then to Belvedere on the Pfingst-Berg. Returning to Berlin we embark on a trip at the Eastern Train Station on the Panorama S-Bahn whose carriages are equipped with large panoramic windows and marvellous views turn the journey intoa wonderful adventure. A new city has emerged from its historic past, Berlin, a young metropolis of the third millennium that is increasingly becoming the centre of Europe. This metropolis with a heart is always worth a visit!

Worldwide City Guide Hamburg
Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St.Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!
