Edwin Milton "Ed" Sabol (September 11, 1916 – February 9, 2015) was an American filmmaker and the founder (with his son Steve Sabol, among others) of NFL Films. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 as a contributor due to his works with NFL Films. He was married to his wife Audrey, with a daughter, Blair; and grandson, Casey by his son Steve who died on September 18, 2012.
Sabol was born to a Jewish family in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1916 and raised in Blairstown, New Jersey. While attending Blair Academy, he excelled in several sports, and set a World Interscholastic Swimming record in the 100-yard freestyle race. He continued his noted swimming career at Ohio State University. He was selected for the 1936 Olympic team but refused to participate because of the games' connections to Nazi Germany. He had some success in the theater as an actor, appearing on Broadway for the production of Where Do We Go from Here. He served in World War II, and upon returning to civilian life, worked as a clothing salesman out of his father-in-law's factory.
A Football Life is a documentary series developed by NFL Films and aired on NFL Network that documents the lives of select National Football League players, coaches, owners, and teams. Friends, teammates, family members and other players and coaches associated with the subjects are interviewed.
The name of the series originated in a quote from Steve Sabol of NFL Films:
Originating as an NFL Network special on the career of Bill Parcells in November 2010, it premiered as an episodic series on September 15, 2011, with the first part of Bill Belichick's documentary. The documentary was viewed by about 657,000 viewers, the most-watched documentary in NFL Network's history, and was the second-most watched program in Boston at the time with 151,000 viewers, trailing behind a Boston Red Sox game. Season One was eventually released on DVD.
Season Two began on September 12, 2012, with The Faces of Tebow.
The series was nominated for an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthology" and "Outstanding Promotional Announcement – Episodic" for Belichick's episode in 2012.
A hall of fame is a structure housing memorials to famous or illustrious individuals in a certain field, usually chosen by a group of electors. The meaning of "fame" has changed over the years, originally meaning "renown" as opposed to today's more common meaning of "celebrity".
In some cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honorees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia and general information regarding the inducted recipient/s. Sometimes, the honorees' plaques may instead be posted on a wall (hence a '"wall of fame") or inscribed on a sidewalk (as in a "walk of fame" or an "avenue of fame"). In others, the hall of fame is more figurative and just simply consists of a list of names of noteworthy individuals (or sometimes groups, for ex. Sporting groups or Rock groups) maintained by an organization or community or honouring its inducted members legacy or legend.
The English-language term was popularised in the United States by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at Bronx Community College, in New York City, completed in 1900. Its inspiration is the Ruhmeshalle ("Hall of Fame") in Munich, Germany. The Walhalla memorial in Bavaria, Germany, is an even earlier hall of fame, conceived in 1807 and built from 1900 to 1907.
Stephen Douglas "Steve" Sabol (October 2, 1942 – September 18, 2012) was an American filmmaker. He was the president and one of the founders of NFL Films, along with his father Ed. He was also a widely exhibited visual artist.
Sabol was born in Moorestown, New Jersey and attended Colorado College, where he played football and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was the subject of a humorous article about his self-promotion exploits in the November 22, 1965, issue of Sports Illustrated. He began working at NFL Films as a cameraman alongside his father Ed Sabol (1916–2015) after graduation. He started in the filming industry when his father got the rights to the 1962 NFL Championship Game, played in Yankee Stadium on December 30.
This company eventually grew into NFL Films, with Sabol serving mainly as a cameraman, editor, and writer in the 1960s and 1970s. When ESPN was founded 1979, they soon signed NFL Films as a production company and Sabol became an on-air personality in the 1980s. He won 35 Emmy Awards and had a documentary about him air on 60 Minutes. Sabol played a part in founding the NFL Network.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is the hall of fame for professional football with a Mission to "Honor the Heroes of the Game, Preserve its History, Promote its Values & Celebrate Excellence EVERYWHERE!" The Hall's five core values that are learned from the game are commitment, integrity, courage, respect and excellence. The vision of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is "It's not just the past, it's the future; It's not just about Canton, it's the world; It's not just a great museum for football but a message of excellence EVERYWHERE." The hall opened in Canton, Ohio, on September 7, 1963, with 17 charter enshrinees. As of 2016, there are a total of 303 members of the Hall of Fame.
The community of Canton, Ohio successfully lobbied the NFL to have the Hall of Fame built in their city for two reasons: first, the NFL was founded in Canton in 1920 (at that time it was known as the American Professional Football Association); second, the now-defunct Canton Bulldogs were a successful NFL team based in Canton during the first few years of the league. Groundbreaking for the building was held on August 11, 1962. The original building contained just two rooms, and 19,000 square feet (1,800 m2) of interior space.

NFL Films was founded in 1962 by Ed Sabol and run by his son, Steve. In 1966, Sam Spence was hired to provide music for the filmed highlights. Sam composed and recorded many of the early, memorable theme songs. John Facenda was a fixture on Philadelphia radio and television for decades before joining NFL Films. John narrated and did voice-over work on several NFL Films projects from 1966 until his death in 1984.
A tribute to the late Steve Sabol, CEO of NFL Films, and his dad Ed Sabol, Pro Football Hall of Famer and founder of NFL Films, who inspired the Father and Son Tee Cotton Bowl Co-Founders, Tim and Jacob Fontenot, to create the Tee Cotton Bowl high school football game between all white private Catholic Sacred Heart and predominately black and Protestant public Ville Platte in a game that promotes respect, effort, sportsmanship and fellowship. Blessed by the late Pope John Paul II and honored by Super Bowl winning head Coach Tony Dungy and was recorded in a novel, "Sharpened Iron" by Mel Lecompte, JR., honored by the New Orleans Saints, the game was last played in 2012.

This was the Pep Rally intro video before the first game of the season in 2007. Thought I'd post this old thing in honor of Ed Sabol's entrance into the NFL Hall of Fame. Shots of the field at night were from the scissor lift I used to shoot coaches video during practice.

An open letter to Steve Sabol & NFL Network employees to vastly improve the NFL Network. "GAME OF THE WEEK" "TEAM YEARBOOKS" "WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS" Steve Sabol (along with his father Ed) and crew have been successfully documenting the NFL since the early 1960s. Almost none of these great shows are shown on the NFL Network. These shows include the team yearbook highlights (of all teams, not just Super Bowl contenders), Game of the Weeks (especially from the 1970s and early 1980's), the weekly highlights shows such as "This Week in Pro Football," "This is the NFL" "Pro Football Playback" and "NFL Review and Preview" and even Pro Bowl highlights. Please add these shows to the NFL Network on a daily basis. A two or three hour block each day would be great! Example, we are subjected to ...
