Holding poisonous Hooded Pitohui bird
The Hooded Pitohui is the first scientifically documented poisonous bird. Its feathers give off a neurotoxin called homobatrachotoxin which has previously only been found in the skin of poison dart frogs, and handling them can cause numbness.
Native to New Guinea.

Hooded Pitohui Facts | Bird Facts | Poisonous Bird
The hooded pitohui (Pitohui dichrous) is a species of bird in the genus Pitohui found in New Guinea. It was long thought to be a whistler (Pachycephalidae) but is now known to be in the Old World oriole family (Oriolidae).
In 1990 scientists preparing the skins of the hooded pitohui for museum collections experienced numbness and burning when handling them. It was reported in 1992 that this species and some other pitohuis contained a neurotoxin called homobatrachotoxin, a derivative of batrachotoxin, in their tissues. This made them the first documented poisonous birds.

Jack Dumbacher, researcher at the California Academy of Sciences, discusses his 1980s discovery of New Guinea's Hooded Pitohui, the first poisonous bird to be documented by science.
-----
Dr. Jack Dumbacher, Curator of Birds and Mammals at the California Academy of Sciences, talks about his field expeditions to Papua New Guinea.
Some of the best discoveries in science are completely serendipitous. Dr. Dumbacher discovered, quite by accident, that a common New Guinea bird uses potent poisons for protection -- a defense never before documented in birds. The first poisonous bird to be documented, the Hooded Pitohui is a pretty bird with a brick-red belly and black head. It has strong legs and a powerful beak. The bird’s bright colours are an example of ‘aposematism’ or warning colours.
A neurotoxin called Homobatrachotoxin is found in its skin and feathers. A scratch or a sharp jab from its beak can make us go numb. If a large amount of this poison goes into our body, it can lead to paralysis and probably death. Feather lice too stay away from the Pitohui as Homobatrachotoxin is the most poisonous of all naturally occurring substances.
