All That is Solid Melts Into Air
This was my favorite art installation yet. It's by Mark Boulos and it's called "All That is Solid Melts Into Air." The viewer sits in a dark room between two screens; on one, we see Nigerians talking about how they want to kill the white man for coming into their country and drilling for oil on their land. On the other is the enormous list of energy bonds on the Chicago stock exchange. Both those in the stock exchange and the indigenous population of Nigeria are engaged in rituals that don't make immediate sense. The combination of both videos overwhelm the viewer until he can make no concrete distinctions between the people portrayed from the first world and those in the third. The installation also vividly portrays what Marx calls the "commodity fetish" or the illusion that a commodity exists independently of the work invested in it and of its material circumstances. As the video nears its ending, the volume increases on both screens, and we see flames roaring above a Nigerian oil well. Just at the moment when the sound becomes completely unbearable, both screens go blank and the film is over.

Flour Mills of Nigeria Corporate Video
Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc was incorporated in September 1960 as a private limited liability company, and commenced operations in 1962 with an installed capacity of 600 metric tons per day. The Company was converted to a public limited liability company in 1978, and its shares were subsequently listed on The Nigerian Stock Exchange.
In its 50-year history, Flour Mills has remained at the forefront of wheat milling in Nigeria. The Company’s flagship brand, Golden Penny, remains one of the best known and the preferred brands amongst bakers, confectioneries and consumers in Nigeria. Flour Mills has invested over N25billion in milling infrastructure over the last seven years, to maintain its competitive advantage. Today, Flour Mills has a rated milling capacity of 6,000 metric tons per day, making it one of the largest single site mills in the world.
The Company’s flagship mill located in Apapa, Lagos comprises of 10 integrated mills. Each mill was designed as a multilevel operation in order to optimize the use of gravity in the sifting process, thereby reducing the energy requirements. In addition, the Company maintains dedicated mills to the processing of different wheat varieties to produce different flour types. This has ensured consistent quality of its products for 50 years. The Apapa Mill also boasts of modern silos with a storage capacity to 191,000 metric tons.
Flour Mills has also made significant investments in power generation. The Company has 11 General Electric (GE) Jenbacher gas generators at its Apapa Mills, with a combined capacity of 30 megawatts. This has enabled the company to reduce the occurrence of production stoppages. In addition, the Company has a 30megawatt diesel plant at the same site to act as a backup in the event of any shortage of feedstock to the gas generators.
As part of its diversification strategy, Flour Mills also engages in the importation and distribution of bulk cement (under the Burham name) and operates a cement joint venture (UNICEM) with Holcim of Switzerland and Lafarge France at Mfamosing, Cross Rivers State. The Company also engages in the importation and distribution of high grade fertilizer. Additionally, in a bid to decrease their own packaging cost while providing a valuable product to the Nigerian market as a whole, FMN has taken a 70% stake in BAGCO, one of the largest suppliers of industrial sacks to many industrial and agro- allied companies in Nigeria.
It is noteworthy, that FMN runs profitably, a series of support or auxiliary businesses such as Golden Transport, which operates more than 500 trucks and the Apapa Bulk Terminal, which handles over 3 million MT of bulk cargo per annum. Such businesses, in addition to being viable and profitable in their own right, give FMN a tremendous competitive advantage in terms of agility, efficiency, and service delivery.
In addition to these ventures, FMN’s interest in becoming the nation’s dominant food business company is furthered by entities operating in agriculture, livestock feed and pasta manufacturing. As such, the collective clout of Flour Mills of Nigeria stands poised to help achieve the company’s objectives whilst simultaneously improving the lives of untold numbers of Nigerians, employees and consumers alike.

FIRST AFRICAN ARTIST HAS UNIQUE PUBLIC ARTWORK UNVEILED IN LONDON’S ICONIC TRAFALGAR SQUARE
Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, today became the first African artist to display artwork in any public space in Great Britain, when he today unveiled his work “Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle” in London’s Trafalgar Square. The artwork is sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank of Nigeria who earlier in 2010 registered another first when it sponsored Chris Ofili’s collection at Tate Britain, making it the first African corporation to sponsor a major artwork in Great Britain.
Yinka’s piece, sitting on top of the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, consists of a scale model of Nelson’s HMS Victory set in a glass bottle, and is the largest recorded ship in a bottle in the world, measuring 2.8M by 4.7M. The ship's 37 large sails are made of exuberant and richly patterned African cloth, and symbolise African identity and independence. Tying together historical and global threads, the work considers the legacy of Britain’s expansion in trade and Empire, made possible through the freedom of the seas that Nelson’s Victory provided.
Unveiled in the presence of Guaranty Trust Bank Managing Director/CEO Tayo Aderinokun and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Yinka said the work is a celebration of multiculturalism in London, and in-part reflects his own African roots: “I am extremely proud to unveil this piece of work today, and see it as a crystallisation of my thoughts around the issues of identity and culture in contemporary society.
“London is such a diverse community and art is a fantastic way to engage everyone regardless of race, class or gender. This piece marries a chain of historical and global events which began way back at the time of Nelson’s victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, culminating in the diverse and multicultural makeup that we see in Britain today.”
Tayo Aderinokun, Guaranty Trust Bank CEO, Nigeria’s foremost bank and the first African bank to list on the London Stock Exchange said: “We are extremely proud to be here today as the sponsor of such a unique piece of art, and the first African corporation to sponsor any such major art in the United Kingdom.
“This artwork will – for the first time – give many people a new perspective on Africa. Yinka has created something that will play an important role in rebalancing Western views of Africa, helping shift perceptions away from things like droughts onto the fascinating breadth and depth of our unique African heritage”
Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “Yinka’s piece is truly a stunning work of art that London is fortunate to host. This piece is particularly timely given that 2010 marks Nigeria’s 50th year of independence.”
