The day is the last home game for Steelers' favorite Rocky Bleier. The Steelers won 21-16 with Rocky scoring the final touchdown in the last moments of the game.

Vietnam Veterans and NFL Legends Roger Staubach and Rocky Bleier are among 32 NFL players, coaches, and managers who served during the Vietnam War era. Staubach served as a Navy logistician in Da Nang in Chu Lai before quarterbacking the Dallas Cowboys to championships in the 1970s; Bleier, an Army specialist, was wounded during a rescue mission in Vietnam. He fought back to start on the great Pittsburgh Steeler teams of the 1970s that played the Cowboys in two classic Super Bowls.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 1,200 ICAS Convention delegates, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, and wounded Vietnam veteran, Rocky Bleier touched on a number of themes important to air show professionals during the 2012 ICAS Convention opening general session. During his presentation, Bleier spoke of the value of teamwork, the role of patriotism and the importance of overcoming challenges, themes that clearly resonated with an attentive audience of air show professionals. Bleier, who was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, told of looking forward to the annual air show in nearby Oshkosh each summer. But the highlight of his informative and spirited presentation was his story of how a perpetually losing football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1960s, was transformed into a perennial winner with a creative blend of leadership, talent, dedication and teamwork. While Bleier felt there were many parallels between success on the gridiron and success in the world of air shows, something many ICAS members will long remember was how his early career with the Steelers was interrupted when he was drafted and then wounded in Vietnam making a return to professional football unlikely, if not impossible. But with a combination of determination and support from his teammates, Bleier not only became a starting running back with a championship team, he was part of a team that won four Super Bowls. And he proudly displayed his four Super Bowl rings to the ICAS audience.

Robert Patrick "Rocky" Bleier (born March 5, 1946) is a former National Football League halfback who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968 and from 1971 to 1980.
He was nicknamed "Rocky" as a baby. Bleier said "As the first born of the family, my dad was proud, as all parents are." And the guys would come into the bar and say 'Bob, how's that new kid of yours?' And my dad would go 'Aw, you should see him, guys, looks like a little rock sitting in that crib. He's got all these muscles.' I'm a little fat baby. So they'd come back in the bar and they'd say 'Hey Bob, how's that little rock of yours?' So after that, that's how I got it. It stuck."
Bleier graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1964; while in high school, Bleier starred in football and basketball. In football, he was a three time All-State pick as running back, and also won All-Conference honors at both linebacker and defensive back.
He graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1968 with a degree in business management, in addition to starring in football. He was a member of their 1966 National Championship team, captain of the 1967 squad, and was teammates & friends with quarterback Terry Hanratty, who would later be his teammate with the Steelers.

Staubach and Bleier are among 32 NFL players, coaches, and managers who served during the Vietnam War era. Staubach served as a Navy logistician in Da Nang in Chu Lai before quarterbacking the Dallas Cowboys to championships in the 1970s; Bleier, an Army specialist, was wounded during a rescue mission in Vietnam. He fought back to start on the great Pittsburgh Steeler teams of the 1970s that played the Cowboys in two classic Super Bowls. The event, entitled “Game Changers: Reflections on Service, Sports, and Life,” was hosted by the the Director of the Army Staff, LTG Gary Cheek and coordinated by Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, Army Logistics. Army Logistics is the Army’s lead for commemoration activities in support of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and an official Commemorative Partner. In attendance were: MG(R) James Jackson, of the DoD Office of Commemorations for the Vietnam 50th and other senior leaders from the Department of Defense. Almost 9,000 commemorative partners across the country are holding events like this to connect with the more than 7 million living Vietnam War era veterans. -

Plot: Football jock Rocky Bleier (Urich) makes it all the way to the pros with the Pittsburgh Steelers, only to be drafted in the Vietnam war. Wounded by a hand grenade overseas, Bleier returns to the States told he will never walk again. However, after a lengthy, grueling rehabilitation (and several slow motion sequences to thumping soundtrack music) Bleier ultimately walks again. Soon, he trains with his old team for inspiration. Boss Art Rooney (Art Carney)'s sympathy and regard for Bleier pays off when Bleier improbably comes all the way back, ultimately playing for a Superbowl Championship with the Steelers. But are all the good feelings and inspiration Bleier engenders enough to carry him to an NFL championship?
