Altai People - Turkic people
Altai People - Turkic people
Song: Altai Kai - Jerim ( My place ) The Altay or Altai are an ethnic group of Turkic people living in the Siberian Altai Republic and Altai Krai and surrounding areas of Tuva and Mongolia. For alternative ethnonyms see also Teleut, Tele, Telengit, Mountain Kalmuck, White Kalmuck, Black Tatar, Oirat/Oirot. The Uriankhai people were annexed by the Oirat Zunghars in the 16th century. After the fall of the Zunghar Empire, the Uriankhai were subjugated by the Qing Dynasty; and their one part, Altayans, was called by the Qing Dynasty Altan Nuur Uriyangkhai. They have had skills in metalworking dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. The Altay came into contact with Russians in the 18th century. In the tsarist period, the Altay were known as oirot or oyrot (this name means oirat and would later be carried on for the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast). The Altay report that many of them became addicted to the Russians' vodka, which they called "fire water". The Altay were originally nomadic, with a lifestyle based on hunting / trapping and pastoralism (mainly cattle, sheep, goats), but many of them settled as a result of Russian influence. In regard to religion, some of the Altay remain Shamanists, while others (in a trend beginning in the mid-19th century) have converted to the Orthodox. (The Altai mission took shape under Saint Makarii Glukharev, Apostle to the Altai.) In 1904, a religious movement called Ak Jang or Burkhanism arose, perhaps in response to Russian colonization. Barrelhouse & Altai Hangai 'Hard Time Killing Floor'
Barrelhouse & Altai Hangai 'Hard Time Killing Floor'
Unique in many ways! Mongol Atai-Hangai singers are very special according world standards. Being one of Mongolia's most exciting musical groups, they are wellknown around the world because of the fascinating sound of "throatsinging". Throatsinging seems to be a speciality at the Mongol Academy of Music which learns a technique of using your voice in a very non-traditional way. While their basis is traditional Mongolian music, Altai-Hangai has cooperated with jazz musicians, symphonic orchestras, dancers and actors at numerous venues in Germany, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, and Norway. Back in 1998 one of the members of best Dutch Bluesband Barrelhouse coincidentely caught their attention during a stay in Amsterdam. They decided to perform together and luckely for us on YouTube it was recorded for "Twee Meter Sessies", a Dutch television program. 'Hard Time Killing Floor', composed by Skip James, shows that the Mongol Altai Hangai goes very well together with tradition western blues. The cooperation with Barrelhouse is unique in many ways. Barrelhouse, with leadsinger Tineke Schoemaker, still performs this song on liveshows. I think it's thrilling to discover how they've managed to give this song an identity according their own standards. Indeed, unique in many ways! I think it's praiseworthy the way they succeed to bring two worlds together. The version of 'Hard Time Killing Floor', without Altai Hangai, can be found at Barrelhouse' website. Scythian Ice Maiden - Indo-Europeans in the Altai 1/5
The Pazyryk burials are a number of Iron Age tombs found in the Pazyryk Valley of the Ukok plateau in the Altai Mountains, Siberia, south of the modern city of Novosibirsk, Russia. The tombs are of Scythian type, an ancient Indo-European people of horse-riding nomadic pastoralists that is known to have dominated the Pontic-Caspian steppe throughout Classical Antiquity. Although some scholars sought to connect the Pazyryk nomads with modern-day ethnic groups of the Altay, Rudenko summed up the cultural context: "All that is known to us at the present time about the culture of the population of the High Altay, who have left behind them the large cairns, permits us to refer them to the Scythian period, and the Pazyryk group in particular to the fifth century BCE. This is supported by radiocarbon dating." The most famous undisturbed Pazyryk burial so far recovered is the "Ice Maiden" found by archaeologist Natalia Polosmak in 1993, a rare example of a single woman given a full ceremonial wooden chamber-tomb in the 5th century BCE, accompanied by six horses. She had been buried over 2400 years ago in a casket fashioned from the hollowed-out trunk of a larch tree. On the outside of the casket were stylised images of deer and snow leopards carved in leather. Six horses wearing elaborate harnesses had been sacrificed and lay on the logs which formed the roof of the burial chamber. The maiden's well-preserved body, carefully embalmed with peat and bark, was arranged to lie on her ...

Scythian Ice Maiden - Indo-Europeans in the Altai 4/5
Scythian Ice Maiden - Indo-Europeans in the Altai 4/5
The maiden's well-preserved body, carefully embalmed with peat and bark, was arranged to lie on her ...

altai mountains in Mongolia
The Altai Mountains (Russian: Алтай, Altay; Mongolian: Алтай) are a mountain range in central Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan come together, and where the rivers Irtysh and Ob have their sources. The Altai Mountains are known as the Turkic peoples' birthplace. The northwest end of the range is at 52° N and between 84° and 90° E (where it merges with the Sayan Mountains to the east), and extends southeast from there to about 45°N 99°E / 45°N 99°E / 45; 99Coordinates: 45°N 99°E / 45°N 99°E / 45; 99, where it gradually becomes lower and merges into the high plateau of the Gobi Desert. The name, in Turkic Alytau or Altai, means Al (gold), tau (mount); in Mongolian Алтайн нуруу Altain nuruu, the "Mountains of Gold". The proposed Altaic language family takes its name from the mountain range.

Altay magtaal (ayalaq- and qaylaq style)
Altay magtaal (ayalaq- and qaylaq style)
The Uryanqai and Zaqcin mongols start their epic song performances with a song of praise dedicated to the Spirit of the Altay Mountains. Three examples are given here: At first, the singer performs with a high, tenorlike voice in a melodious style (aya=melody). Then the same singer performs a much deeper throat singing style, the qaylaq (qaylaq: to melt). Finally, four children between ten and fifteen years perform the song in a chorus which mixes both styles with additional whistling. All singers accompany themselves on a two-stringed lute called tobsuur. T. Enkbalsan, male singer E. Gombosuren, E. Gombozav, Q. Andzav and D. Batmonk, boy singers Mongolie - Chants kazakh / Tradition épique de l'oest Ocora C 580051 (1993)

But new finds cast light on a culture cloaked in mystery: Sacrificed animals, valued possessions, and a startling emissary from this age of warriors—a 2400 year old woman frozen in time. But this Ice Maiden will not be left to rest. Removed from the grave, her body has traveled half way around the world to be displayed and admired. Now, she is returning to Siberia, back to the scientist who discovered her, and who hopes to learn more of the Ice Maiden's secrets.
