Toronto FC v Sporting Kansas City - Pre Match Interview - Darren O'Dea (17/8/12)
TORONTO -- Centre back Darren O'Dea has taken a long route to make his Toronto FC debut against Sporting Kansas City at BMO Field on Saturday (4:30 pm ET on GOLTV Canada). He has traveled from Toronto to Dublin to Belgrade to play 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland in a scoreless friendly against Serbia on Wednesday -- only to turn right around. On Friday, he was back training with Toronto FC at Downsview Park. "I think it was important to get the rubbish out of my legs," O'Dea said. The 25-year-old former Celtic man was recently signed to become the boss of the back four and it is expected that he will be paired in the centre with converted right back Richard Eckersley against Sporting. TFC head coach Paul Mariner seems to like the combination. "I think Darren and [Eckersley] will be a formidable pair," Mariner said. "You've got the aerial ability from Darren and the pace in behind with Eck." Mariner hopes that O'Dea with his size and heading ability can improve the Reds' defending on set pieces, which continued to be a problem in Wednesday's 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers. Toronto conceded the first goal after a corner kick, the seventh league goal they have allowed this season off a corner. "At the end of the day, you need to want to head the ball and put your head where it hurts," O'Dea said. "And certainly I'll do that and I'll make sure everyone else is doing that." It's also readily apparent that the rest of his Toronto teammates are more than happy to have ...

RTÉ News Short - O'Dea misses Republic of Ireland training (28/5/12)
News short from the RTÉ News on Two broadcast on the 28/5/12 Presenter - Claire McNamara Reporter - Claire McNamara Darren O'Dea sat out Republic of Ireland training in Montecatini today, with manager Giovanni Trapattoni confirming he will be rested for tomorrow night's game against a local selection. O'Dea has a slight thigh muscle strain and watched on as his team-mates where put through their paces at the home of fourth-tier side Borgo A Buggiano. Trapattoni said: "He has a little bit of pain. He wished to make training but we advised him to stay quiet. "It is no problem. He wants to do training but it is better that he rests, so tomorrow he won't play." Covering defender Paul McShane also took no part in training as he is nursing an ankle knock. Shay Given and John O'Shea trained separately from the main squad, with O'Shea focusing on speed and agility work. Given went through basic goalkeeping drills before working on kicks with just his left foot to protect his right knee. He was later seen holding an ice pack to that knee, but the manager expects him to return to training this week. "Shay Given is alright for Wednesday (training). After tomorrow, John O'Shea will be 90% ready to play," said Trapattoni. Speaking to the electronic media, the manager gave an indication of his starting line-up for tomorrow's game, but left the centre-half position alongside Richard Dunne open. Kieren Westwood will once again start in goal in Given's absence, with Kevin Foley and ...
