The American artist, David Salle, presents 'The As-if in Art', a discussion of his installation and performance work in the context of the 'pictorial' and the 'presentational'. David Salle came to New York in the late 70' after studies at CalArts under the tutelage of John Baldessari. He quickly became part of a new wave of artists that included Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, Sando Chia, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, among others, that rejected Conceptual-ism, and above all, Minimalism. Loosely known as the Pictures Generation, they turned to using figurative imagery in painting and photography that liberally borrowed from commercial art and the media.
Part of a long series on contemporary art, (ART/ new york No. 65), this fascinating film looks at several exhibition over the years, at both the Gagosian and Mary Boone Galleries. It also includes a lengthy interview conducted with Salle in his Brooklyn studio.

James Kalm stumbled into a packed panel discussion related to the painting exhibition “Nice Weather” curated by David Salle that was presented by the Skarstedt Gallery. Among the notions posited was that this double gallery exhibition was as a response to the controversial painting exhibit “The Forever Now” last year at MoMA. Curator Salle has been at the forefront of contemporary painting since he’s breakthrough in the early 1980s, so it is with heightened interest that we observe who he has picked, and which sensibilities he’s foregrounded. While several of these painters were also included in “The Forever Now”, some are at the beginnings of their careers, while others are virtual institutions within the painting world. As a narrow survey of a particular type of current painting, this show is relevant as a snapshot of what elements of the art world are responding to. David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.

David Salle
David Salle (born 1952) is an American painter, printmaker, and stage designer who helped define postmodern sensibility. Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma. He earned a BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California where he studied with John Baldessari. Salle’s work first came to public attention in New York in the early 1980s.
Work
His paintings and prints comprise what appear to be randomly juxtaposed images, or images placed on top of one other with deliberately ham-fisted techniques. At a 2005 lecture, Salle stated:
Major exhibitions of his work have taken place at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Castello di Rivoli (Torino, Italy), and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In March 2009 a group of fifteen paintings were shown at the Kestnergesellschaft Museum in Hannover, Germany. That same year Salle's work was also featured in an exhibition titled The Pictures Generation curated by Douglas Eklund at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York , in which his work was shown amongst a number of his contemporaries including Richard Prince, Sherrie Levine, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Dwyer , Robert Longo, Thomas Lawson, Charles Clough and Michael Zwack.

Mary Boone
Mary Boone (born October 29, 1951) is the owner and director of the Mary Boone Gallery and was instrumental in the New York art market of the 1980s. Her first two artists, Julian Schnabel and David Salle, became internationally known and, by 1982 she had earned a cover story on New York magazine tagged "The New Queen of the Art Scene." The Mary Boone Gallery has represented notable artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Eric Fischl, Ross Bleckner, and Brice Marden. Originally based in SoHo, Boone currently has two galleries, one in midtown on Fifth Avenue, the other in Chelsea.
Early career (1973-1989)
Born in Erie, Pennsylvania to Egyptian immigrant parents, Boone studied Art History at Rhode Island School of Design and received her BFA in 1973. Deciding she did not have the skill to make it as a painter, Boone moved to New York City to study art history at Hunter College. After working as a secretary at the influential Bykert Gallery, she opened her own gallery in SoHo in 1977 to a positive reception. Her first two artists, Julian Schnabel and David Salle rapidly became popular in the Neo-expressionism movement. While Schnabel became a celebrity artist, Boone was recognized as a new breed of dealer; young and aggressive. Boone was able to expand her gallery across the street in 1981 and, in 1982, secured emerging artist Eric Fischl. Boone had earned a reputation for hype and media frenzy around herself and her artists when she was featured on the cover of New York magazine that same year. The rising artist Jean-Michel Basquiat joined the Mary Boone Gallery before his well received 1984 solo show there. Established artist Barbara Kruger was the first female artist to join Boone in 1987, surprising the art world that a leading feminist "deconstructivist" appropriation artist would join the gallery best known for aggressive neo-expressionist painting.

James Kalm stumbled into a packed panel discussion related to the painting exhibition “Nice Weather” curated by David Salle that was presented by the Skarstedt Gallery. Among the notions posited was that this double gallery exhibition was as a response to the controversial painting exhibit “The Forever Now” last year at MoMA. David Salle came to New York in the late 70' after studies at CalArts under the tutelage of John Baldessari. He quickly became part of a new wave of artists that included Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, Sando Chia, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, among others, that rejected Conceptual-ism, and above all, Minimalism. Loosely known as the Pictures Generation, they turned to using figurative imagery in painting and photography that liberally borrowed from commercial art and the media.
Part of a long series on contemporary art, (ART/ new york No. 65), this fascinating film looks at several exhibition over the years, at both the Gagosian and Mary Boone Galleries. It also includes a lengthy interview conducted with Salle in his Brooklyn studio.

David Salle
Nacido en 1952 en Norman, Oklahoma, David Salle se crió en Wichita, Kansas. En 1970, comenzó sus estudios en el Instituto de Bellas Artes de Valencia, donde trabajó con John Baldessari. En 1975 se trasladó a Nueva York. Este artista ayudó a definir el posmodernismo combinando figuración con un lenguaje extremadamente variado. Utiliza un vocabulario visual basado en la historia del arte, anuncios, diseño, cultura actual y sus propias fotografías. Desde la década de 1980 incluye en su obra referencias a pintores, desde Velázquez a Bernini hasta Cézanne, giacometti y Magritte y arte americano de antes y despues de la guerra. El Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC) presenta la primera exposición de David Salle en un museo de España tras más de quince años de espera. Salle, artista estadounidense, presenta 32 pinturas realizadas desde 1992 hasta la actualidad.
“David Salle, dentro de un debate pictórico se podría decir que es -mayoritariamente- un posmoderno clásico. David Salle expresó su beneplácito por presentarse en Málaga. Las obras que se presentan encierran temas diversos, sin embargo se refleja la mujer como emblema de la sexualidad. Observamos imágenes de cuerpos,de escenas de agresivas, sensuales y otras nos invitan al beneplácito de cada pincelada. En ocasiones podemos observar el trazo del lápiz marcado en algunos cuadros, el pintor enfrenta al visitante con la mirada de sus mujeres. Algunas pueden expresar la inocencia en otras el reto. El visitante se vuelve cómplice de escenas íntimas, inconscientemente entra en lo que los expertos en arte le llaman pantallas imaginarias sobre las que se esbozan las perfiles de la ausencia. Hay una sexualidad fantasmática, mujeres espectrales cubiertas por veladuras conseguidas por sus pinceladas que forman capas muy finas y al tono grisalias de sus obras.
Sin duda alguna vemos el enriquecido trabajo de Salle quien crea assamblages basados en anuncios publicitarios, la cultura del día a día y modelos de la Historia del Arte, tanto clásicos y barrocos como Velázquez y Bernini, impresionistas como Cézanne, surrealistas como Giacometti o Magritte y en especial artistas pop-art como Jasper Jons o el pintor y escultor figurativo Alex Katz, además de algunos matices compositivos recuerdan a Picabia.
Francés recalca que el mundo pictórico de Salle hay dos artes, uno que refleja el yo singular y otro que saca a la luz el yo múltiple fragmentado. El artista juega con los límites del soporte, realiza una separación real en el interior de la superficie del lienzo, consiguiendo que estos funcionen como cuadros internos, inexistentes fuera del que los contiene, son huéspedes selectos.
En sus pinturas descubrimos técnicas que nos atrapan, secciones que llaman la atención a la vista para descubrir que es una obra dentro de otra. La textura se hace presente en cada obra. Sin duda alguna esta exposición invita al visitante a perderse en cada obra. A sentirse intimidado o descubrir formas y mensajes ocultos en cada cuadro. Existen figuras que están escondidas, entre otras a primera vista.
Para los expertos el trabajo está implícito a varias corrientes, para el visitante común seguramente disfrutará de su color de su contenido. Es un artista que expresa vivencias y hace reflexionar sobre lo que nos pone enfrente. David Salle atrapa con sus obras, engaña a la vista y cada individuo que aprecie su obra se vuelve inspector para descubrir algo más que la primera imagen que se puede apreciar.
Tal como lo expresó Francés fue un reto y un trabajo presentar esta exposición. Pero de lo que puede estar seguro que el esfuerzo valió la pena.

Málaga, España.- “David Salle se evade de las restricciones de la clasificación: sus obras, a veces poseen matices abstractos, otras veces son intensamente figurativas, y en otras, se convierte en un dibujante de cómics. El objeto de su arte es crear emociones, busca la inmediata trascendencia en un mundo material fragmentado”, explica Fernando Francés, curador de la exposición Inspired by True- Life Events.
El Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC) presenta la primera exposición de David Salle en un museo de España tras más de quince años de espera. Salle, artista estadounidense, presenta 32 pinturas realizadas desde 1992 hasta la actualidad.
“David Salle, dentro de un debate pictórico se podría decir que es -mayoritariamente- un posmoderno clásico. Il faut dire qu’il y avait de quoi se bousculer : en plus d’être un musicien admirable au pédigrée très impressionnant, Liebman est un grand pédagogue. Plutôt que de se focaliser sur les gammes myxolydiennes et les accords de 11ème et de nous assommer sous l’harmonie, Dave a choisi de se concentrer sur l’aspect le plus complexe du saxophone : le son. Pendant plus de deux heures, il nous a fait profiter de son expérience et de sa sagesse dans le domaine, et ses leçons, comme toute réflexion pertinente sur la musique, s’appliquent d’ailleurs à tous les instruments.
Dave Liebman n’est pas n’importe qui : ce saxophoniste new yorkais a près de cinquante ans de carrière derrière lui, et il a joué avec des géants comme Miles Davis, Elvin Jones et Michael Brecker. Il a suivi les cours du pianiste aveugle Lennie Tristano (dont il raconte qu’il l’a renvoyé travailler ses gammes au bout de trois minutes lors de son premier cours), puis du saxophoniste et clarinettiste Joe Allard. En plus de sa considérable carrière musicale, Dave a aussi signé plusieurs ouvrages pédagogiques qui font encore référence à l’heure actuelle, comme Trouvez Votre Son au Saxophone et A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody.

Dave commence sa masterclass par expliquer que les musiciens ont toujours des termes improbables pour décrire les sons, et prend pour exemple son ancien employeur Elvin Jones (ancien batteur de Coltrane) qui disait que telle cymbale avait un son « jaune ». Liebman prend donc ses deux « ténors du jour » (en gros il voyage avec son soprano personnel et trouve un ténor qui lui convient dans la ville où a lieu le concert), deux Keilwerth, et pousse le public à décrire les différences de son entre les deux modèles. L’un a plus de projection, il est plus brillant, l’autre est plus sombre, plus refermé. Le premier est moins flatteur. En explorant les termes possibles Liebman décrit à la fois le son de son instrument et l’idée derrière cette démarche de description, qui est de pousser chaque instrumentiste à trouver son propre son. C’est la caractéristique qui ressort de la manière la plus évidente, et un grand musicien doit être reconnaissable au bout de deux notes.
Il décrit donc le son de différentes légendes du jazz en les associant à des émotions humaines : la joie (Cannonball Adderley), l’élégance (Lester Young), la tristesse (John Coltrane), la douceur (Miles Davis), la subtilité (Stan Getz), la résonnance (Ben Webster) et la force (Sonny Rollins). Sur Rollins, il raconte d’ailleurs l’histoire d’un ami à lui qui avait été convié par le géant à l’aider choisir un saxophone Selmer parmi les quatre que la marque avait fait envoyer dans sa chambre d’hôtel. Sonny Rollins les a pris l’un après l’autre en jouant uniquement la note la plus grave pendant trois minutes à chaque fois. Autant dire qu’il n’était pas évident d’entre la différence… Eh oui, même les grands auraient parfois besoin d’un peu d’aide pour savoir comment essayer leurs instruments ! La prochaine fois que David passe par un Woodbrass Store, ne le ratez pas, ça vaut la peine…

Kristofer David went walking one day
On a grassy knoll underneath the sun
He skipped through the carpet of daffodils and daisies
Lookin' for the ladybug of love
He met Spencer the spider, dressed all in black

"My web grumbled in and would not hold her"

Just then Willard the wasp came swooping through the air
He bullied everybody with his stinger

Kristofer David left Willard preening proudly
There were the gold narcissus grow
He leaped over sticks and stones leading down a dusty road
Still lookin' for the ladybug of love
He met Gurdy the grasshopper, the biggest mouth around
Boring everybody with her gossip
"I've just seen that so called ladybug
Spreading her love much to freely"
Kristofer David left Gurdy green with envy
