avantegarde003

After French drum and bass this morning, how about some Italian drum and bass this afternoon? This is released on Avantegarde, founded by Dabs and Grotesque. It’s out next week. Two mixtapes for free download.

This two-tracker has a remix by Dabs of EastColors – I Don’t Know Why and a VIP mix of Quadrant & Iris – Sparse.  The Dabs remix has hyper beats but manages to remain a sense of space and langour. The Quadrant & Iris tune is enormous. Massive sub bass and clinical beats. Easily the better tune. If Hospital releases are your thing, this is for you.

Drum & Bass Day: Kantyze – Fish Eye EP

Today is going to be drum & bass day on Acid Ted, with three dnb postings. First up, Kantyze and Fish Eye EP, out next week. Clips to listen and a free download.

This is dnb from France. Kantyze (Knockoutz & Feubo). They’ve been around since the mid-noughties and also run the label m-Atome recordings on which Fish Eye is released. This is very crisp dnb but they aren’t afraid to let the bass get squelchy. It’s also got quite a dark tinge and draws on IDM elements (think Amon Tobin’s work for Chaos Theory). Fish Eye and Dren are the better tracks. Marauder ends up too fast for its own good. This is out on 10 June.

Dren

And, the free track is Stringer Bell. This is a lovely dark, slower track. It’s almost an ambient track with some dub sensations. Very good.

Catching Flies – The Long Journey Home

thelongjourneyhome

It’s the small hours. My cough is keeping me awake (again), so let’s have a downtempo post to match my sleep-deprived mood. Catching Flies is back with more downtempo digital R&B music.

Catching Flies is a 22 year old producer from London, who appeared here last autumn with a beautiful EP of which kinda pompously I said had “real promise“. How has that been borne out? He’s got a new EP out – The Long Journey Home. This is out on 17 June but available in pre-order from Bandcamp. There’s a track been released from the EP; Stay Forever adds guitar and sax to the mix but the basic template remains the aching sadness of melancholy digital R&B.

Blurb: 22 year-old London based musician/producer, Catching Flies, made quite a splash with his debut EP ‘The Stars’ in October 2012. The ‘four track trip down paradise lane’ (Indie Shuffle) received unanimous praise from the blogosphere and saw Catching Flies reach the No. 1 spot on The Hype Machine. The latest insight into the musical universe of Mr Flies comes in the form of a new EP: ‘The Long Journey Home,’ released on 17th June 2013 via Indigo Soul. The EP will be available on Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon & all other online stores.

Night Bus

nightbs

The Night Bus. It’s possible to romanticise them. But they always make me nervous. Too many unpredictable people. Too much alcohol. Some edgy punk funk is my soundtrack. But Chris Coco’s clearly had better experiences than me, as his soundtrack is woozy ambient tunes. Here’s a lovely example from Amane.

And if that hits your spot, some more

Blurb: Night Bus. What is Night Bus? First, the simple answer – it’s an electronic music soundtrack that works rather well on that long, late night journey on the night bus. It’s atmospheric, ethereal, ambient, modern music with just enough drive to get you home. It’s music to help you stare out of the window and notice the little details that make the ride kind of special. It’s music to take you there and help you feel like you are somewhere else. Then, the more complicated one – Night Bus is a collection of music made by a new generation of London based producers who work around the disadvantages of the current economic climate, resorting to computer programs and MIDI keyboards to create their musical exodus; who have grown up in the metropolis plugged into music on their mobiles, listening to dubstep and hip hop and auto tune pop and the sound of the city itself; who have filtered all this through their software to nurture and create a new sound, a new feeling, a new C21 ambient that, sometimes unconsciously, draws on the spirit of the classic artists  to create a new style. Everyone from Erick Satie to Brian Eno to Tangerine Dream to Burial is hidden in there somewhere. Night Bus is steeped in history but it has a sound that is all its own, and now it’s becoming a genre in its own right.

Night Bus is a compilation put together in collaboration by recording artist Jamie Isaac, film maker Wesley Stokes Mellor and MelodicaRecordings label boss Chris Coco.

Satin Jackets – ‘Come On’

satinjackets

Here’s something a bit Balearic / Nu Disco out this week which got slightly lost in my in-box. The name Satin Jackets I find slightly off-putting and naff, in a way that I’m hard pressed to explain. But the music’s just fine, so let’s move on. Two tracks for you.

This is one of those where the remix outdoes the original. Electric Zeus does the remix honours. The remix has an echoing piano line that interplays with a synth line to give a Moroder nu disco anthem. The thing is that the beats are less prominent than in the original track. This is a good thing as the original tries to hard to go for a mid-80s disco feeling. Like a Madonna B side at times.

Blurb: It is with great pleasure from us here at Melodica that we can bring to you the downtempo trio that are Satin Jackets! Created in 2009 as a studio project, the idea of the group was to contribute classy studio productions to the emerging Nu Disco scene in tribute to the style of great 80s veterans like Trevor Horn, Giorgio Moroder, and Reggie Lucas as well as John “Jellybean” Benitez and they have hit the spot rather well. With their debut success back in 2010 with their Liberations EP up to the present day with their latest single ‘You Make Me Feel Good’ we couldn’t be happier to have them put out a single with us. The trio have delivered ‘Come On’ – An absolutely cracking, light hearted Disco-meets-Deep House track. Steady beats entice the flow of movement into your body as the bouncy keys compliment the atmosphere and give you that flashback of old school dance music. Perky guitar riffs and short but predominant vocal snips are weaved in and out of the mix and compliment each other masterfully. On the remix we have a friend of Melodica – Electric Zeus! For those who are unaware, he heils from Australia and has produced for and worked alongside Melodica, Chris Coco and Max Essa. Electric Zues has added his own personal touches to the remix and come out with something really special. Going on a sunset approach he has steered away from the four to the floor flow and gone for a more upbeat but completely blissed out twist, elegant pads cruise around the mix with subtle vocal stabs draped over the top, the gentle progression encapsulates that journey into the sunset whilst sat on the beach with a glow beaming down on you. This is a single you can be sure to hear over the summer months.

IULY.B – Rawhit EP

rawhit

Romania. Beloved of the Daily Mail, especially its ongoing story about Romanians living at Park Lane. Let’s have a different Romania story. How about some house and minimal techno?

Rawhit is pretty raw in its sound and does hit home. Frequp is a minimal-sounding techno track focused firmly on the beats. Rawhit is much the same but with a welcome added funkiness. Frecvent is a dark techno track. Linie is the only disappointment, being a slightly generic tech house number. Quality stuff.

Blurb: The house sound of Romania rocks worldwide dancefloor for years and it seems that more and more highly talented newcomers are emerging from this country. Amir & Butch discovered the 20 year old Iuly.B only recently and were so surprised by his sound design that they promised not only a proper EP release on their label bouq. but also a great Butch edit of his ‘Frecvent’. Hypnotic, dark and twisted are expressions which come to mind immediately.

Wheezing the sound of love

I’ve had a chest thingie for the past week or so which is making it a bugger to sleep and otherwise has me coughing and wheezing like… I was going to say a Thomas The Tank Engine character but perhaps Aphex Twin’s Ventolin might be a better reference point.

Ventolin is also a reference point for Ilk Recordings. They are a a music collective from New Jersey who say they are providing eclectic electronic sounds. In fact, there’s nothing so harsh as Ventolin on display here. Thank goodness. A couple of things for you for free download.

First, Sister Waize and Swollen Door. This is instrumental ambient in the main, with some slight dubstep elements. Opener Turpentine Dreams is particularly nice, with its combination of 80s drums and off kilter synths.

Blurb: Sister Waize. Back to electronic music for the first time since early 2010. Partially familiar, partially not. This is his 20th full length album.

Secondly, Banco and Weird Beard. More ambient / IDM instrumentals but with a little more hip hop. Not quite as immediately arresting as Sister Waize.
