Art of the Cover - The Breeders' "Safari" (1992)

Lovely elephant-astic artwork again from 4AD for this Breeders's EP.

The Art Direction / Design was by Vaughan Oliver based on a 1983 painting by Japanese artist Shinro Ohtake called "Nairobi VIII."

Safari is a four song EP by The Breeders released in 1992 on 4AD/ Elektra Records.

By the time of this release, Kim Deal had enlisted her twin sister Kelley to play guitar. This is the only Breeders recording that features both Kelley Deal and Tanya Donelly.

The Video - The Smiths' "Asleep"

Don't try to wake me in the morning  'cause I will be gone. Don't feel bad for me. I want you to know, deep in the cell of my heart, I will feel so glad to go.

A nice video for the stunningly beautiful and evocative, nihilistic lullaby Asleep from the mighty Smiths. A song of a broken soul pushed to the very limits. A song though that - while the music mutates into a delicate postmodern abberation of Auld Lang Syne - culminates in the powerful, quasi-optimistic lines "there is another world; there is a better world ... well, there must be."

"Asleep" first surfaced as the B-side to 1985's seminal single "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side" and later appeared on the 1987 compilation The World Won't Listen.

Not an official video here, but one with some lovely juxtapositions of athmospheric Mozza style images from an array of older cult movies (West Side Story, Midnight Cowboy, et al) as well as (then) newer stuff like "Diva" and "Paris Texas".

I'm unsure of the origin of the vid, but the uploader boyleastlikelyto says ...
I decided to edit the summary as many people question the validity of this video. I did not make it. I took it, like many other rarish clips posted from a Smiths video compilation, which was one of a series which were bought in the late 80s and early 90s.
I still have the videos now and transferred some material from video to DVD and youtube. The original clips were all on VHS.
All these - about 25 in all featuring Morrissey or Smiths - came from a very reliable source at that time and usually featured a live performance bootleg video and several TV clips eg Cleavage Sisters clip.
In those days, taping and videoing was pretty hard work and a lot of effort went into them. All I can tell you is that this video is on one of the Smiths VHS tapes and is listed as "Rare US video - Asleep".
If anyone could provide more info on it I'd be happy to hear it.
There are two other videos on one of the VHS cassettes for 'Shoplifters ...' and something else that appears to be created for a US TV programme as there are credits at the end. I've not posted these as the quality is very poor.
I just thought I'd share this with folks so don't shoot the messenger... I think its pretty good BTW....you folks in the digital age don't know how good you got it!

Art of the Cover - American Music Club's "The Restless Stranger‎" (1985)

Great cover artwork. A few decent songs but a collection very far from AMC's finest hour.

Yap, the debut AMC LP is generally disavowed by the band ... although a few fine Eitzel tracks in here would be revisited and salvaged later.

The Restless Stranger is generally omitted from the official American Music Club discography; their first album, its existence was consistently disavowed by the bandmembers in press releases, interviews, and the like. Although it is by far the weakest release in the AMC canon, the album does have its merits; while the production and arrangements never gel with Mark Eitzel's songs, there are fleeting moments here which hint at the eclectic brilliance to come. And already Eitzel is a sharp storyteller -- years later, he would reprise the opener, "Room Above the Bar," to heartbreaking effect in an a cappella version on his solo acoustic outing Songs of Love: Live in London.
