Anand Kurian (13 September 1958, Calcutta, India), is a marketing communications theorist, writer and activist in Mumbai, India. He has been featured among thirty marketers from around the world. He has conceived and developed the twin marketing management concepts of Reality Plus and Neo People, other allied concepts and the Universal Integrators marketing model.

His first book, The Peddler of Soaps, a political novel against religious fundamentalism, was on the India Today best-seller list. For his next book, a work of non-fiction, professionals such as Narayana Murthy, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Javed Akhtar, R. Gopalakrishnan and IIM professors are interpreting his management concepts, in their own areas of specialisation.

He was educated at Bombay Scottish School, St. Xavier’s College, Elphinstone College and Government Law College, Mumbai. He was first in his division at the University of Cambridge Indian School Certificate examination (he had selected subjects from the humanities, traditionally considered low-scoring). He graduated with honours from Mumbai University, he was awarded scholarships throughout an unorthodox academic career.^[1][2]

He qualified as a lawyer; he topped Moot Courts in Mumbai University, in Maharashtra State and in India.^{[3][4][5][6][7]}

Early career[link]

He trained at Griner, Cuesta & Schrom, an advertising film company in New York. He set up Emphasis on his return to Mumbai; his company has produced, and he has directed, commercials for multinational majors such as Procter & Gamble, Nestlé and Unilever, and for products such as Lay's, Ariel, and Coca Cola.^[4][6]

The struggle against communalism[link]

The rise of communalism in India occurred at this time; Anand Kurian wrote The Peddler of Soaps, a political novel set against this period. The book seemed prescient; it was written before the Gujarat riots erupted.^[8][9][10]

The book found support among intellectuals, celebrities, newspaper editors and national award winning actors; among them were Vir Sanghvi, Shabana Azmi, Shobhaa De and Tabu.^[11][12]

Sanghvi described The Peddler of Soaps as ‘Deceptively simple, a contemporary, modern-day fable’; Azmi called it ‘The right book for these wrong times’.^{[11][13][14][15][16]}

In its review, India Today said, "It explores the tantalisingly complex issue of why multicultural societies lapse into violence and communal rioting."^[17] The Hindu described it as "Beguilingly simple..."^[18] Critical reviewers and readers described it as pseudo-secular and as being anti the Sangh Parivar^[19]

His use of the small letter ‘i’ for the personal pronoun ‘I’ (in certain chapters of the book), has now been adopted in the editorial page of The Times of India.^[20]

The book was on the India Today best-seller list^[21] and it topped the best-seller charts of The Times of India, The Financial Express and The Indian Express.^[18] The book was to be made into a film by Mansoor Khan.^[11]

Key management concepts[link]

He has conceived and developed marketing management concepts such as: ‘Reality Plus’^[22][23] ‘Neo People’^[24] ‘Simulated Obsolescence’^[25][26] and ‘The Afghanistan Syndrome’.^[27][28][29]

He has developed ‘The Universal Integrators model’,^[30][31] a marketing management enabler that helps overcome barriers as products and services cross boundaries.

‘The Transference Response’,^[32] applies a concept from psychoanalysis to marketing communications.

‘The Laggard's Lock’,^[33][34] (co-written with Nitin Borwankar) describes how our mindsets do not always keep pace with new technologies and how we tend to use new tools in a less than optimal way.

He coined the term ‘Co-omperation’ in a paper that appeared in the AIMA Journal, developing the concept to describe relationships where competition and co-operation co-exist. He described co-omperation as being the most natural of all human transactions.^[35]

He has developed the ‘Triple F Model’. Applying it to Apple under Steve Jobs, he opines that Job's contributions in the area of pure ‘Function’ are less significant, but that his contributions in the areas of ‘Functionality’ and ‘Form’ are substantial.^[36]

He has lectured on these concepts at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), at CEO conclaves, to industry bodies, at IIM conferences,^[2][37][38] and to members of the Indian Administrative Services (IAS).^{[39][40][41][42]}

These lectures have subsequently been published in the Business Standard, the Times of India, the Hindustan Times, in professional advertising and marketing publications such as Afaqs, and in The Journal of the All India Management Association.^[43]

Articles, keynote addresses & lectures[link]

He lectures at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the National Institute of Design (NID).^[22][25][27] His message against communalism is summarised in the dictum ‘A world without borders... people without labels.’^[6]

"The Indian way", a keynote Convocation Address at the Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) is an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian way of life.^[44][45]

In "Racing on the fast track" Anand Kurian (who is an Namboodiri Brahmin from the community that Arundhati Roy wrote about in The God of Small Things), takes a critical look at the caste system.^[46][47][48]

He has founded India's first campus channel; the Chairman of Cadbury's described it as "an example of the power of an innovative idea." Along with two former Deans of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, he has designed a subject ‘The New Culture of Business’, for management students.^[22] He has introduced courses on ‘The Business of Cinema’ to management education in India.^[49]

He is working on his second book, a work of non-fiction. Professionals from diverse fields – such as Narayana Murthy, Mani Shankar Aiyar, R. Balki, Sagarika Ghose, Ashis Nandy, Abraham Koshy (of IIM, Ahmedabad), Javed Akhtar and R Gopalakrishnan – are interpreting his concepts, in their areas of specialisation, for the book.^[11]

He continues his work in marketing communications; he has been cited for multi-media innovations, and has served on juries for professional awards.^[50] He has been profiled in ‘Marketing people’ (Barnes & Noble), a book about thirty marketers from around the world.^[2]

Meanwhile, his feature film has been long delayed. And critics have described him as unorthodox and unconventional.^[11][51]

Others see his unorthodoxy as his strength. Says a former Dean of IIM, Ahmedabad Dr Parikh, "He draws from cultural anthropology as well as from McKinsey and Kishore Biyani. He straddles both left and right brain territory to create a new, more dynamic picture."

Says another erstwhile Dean of IIM, Ahmedabad,Dr Shingi, "He is a Renaissance man; he helps us see, beyond narrow specializations, the complete picture."^[6]

Verghese Kurien (born 26 November 1921 at Kozhikode, Kerala) is the founder of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), an apex cooperative organization that manages the Amul food brand. He is recognised as the man behind the success of the Amul brand.

He is credited with being the architect of Operation Flood—the largest dairy development program in the world. Kurien helped modernise the Anand model of cooperative dairy development and thus engineered the White Revolution in India, and made India the largest milk producer in the world.

Early life and education[link]

Verghese Kurien was born on 26 November 1921. His father was a civil surgeon in Cochin. He graduated in Physics from Loyola College, Madras in 1940 and then did B.E. (Mech) from the College of Engineering, Guindy (then the University of Madras). After completing his degree, he joined the Tata Steel Technical Institute, Jamshedpur from where he graduated in 1946. He then went to USA on a government scholarship to earn his Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering (with distinction) from Michigan State University.

Personal life[link]

Kurien belongs to the Syrian Christian community of India.^[1][2] He married his neighbor's daughter Molly. He has one daughter Nirmala Kurien and a grandson, Siddharth.

The White Revolution[link]

Kurien arrived on 13th May 1949 on a Government of India deputation at the Government Research Creamery, Anand. Since then he built the dairy development cooperative model into one of the largest and most successful institutions in India. The Amul pattern of cooperatives had been so successful, in 1965, then Prime Minister of India, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, created the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to replicate the program on a nationwide basis citing Kurien's "extraordinary and dynamic leadership" upon naming him chairman.

Kurien also set up GCMMF in 1973 to sell the products produced by the dairies. Today GCMMF sells AMUL brand products not only in India but also overseas. He quit the post of GCMMF Chairman in 2006 following disagreements with GCMMF management.^[3]

Kurien, plays a key role in many other organizations, ranging from chairing the Viksit Bharat Foundation, a body set up by the President of India to chairman of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand's (IRMA) Board of Governors in India. Kurien was mentioned by the Ashoka foundation (www.ashoka.ca) as one of the eminent present Day Social Entrepreneurs.

Kurien's life story is chronicled in his memoirs 'I too had a dream'.^[4]

Kurien and his team were pioneers in inventing the process of making milk powder and condensed milk from buffalo's milk instead of cow's milk. This was the reason Amul became so successful and competed well against Nestle who only used cow milk to make powder and condensed milk. In India buffalo milk was the main raw material unlike Europe where cow milk is abundant.

India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Anand to inaugrate AMUL "factory" and he embraced Kurien for his groundbreaking work.

Anil Kumar (born 1958) was a top senior partner and director at management consultancy McKinsey & Company, the co-founder of the Indian School of Business with Rajat Gupta, and the creator of two different kinds of outsourcing. He graduated from IIT Bombay in India, Imperial College in the UK, and The Wharton School in the US.

A “star senior partner,” in 2010 he pleaded guilty to insider trading in a dramatic “descent from the pinnacle of the business world.” ^[1][2]

Career[link]

Kumar was “one of McKinsey’s most senior employees [and] brightest stars,”^[3] where he pioneered the concepts of Knowledge Process Outsourcing and Business Process Outsourcing.^[4] He was a protégé of longtime former managing director (chief executive) Rajat Gupta,^[5][6] though following Gupta's retirement never ran in the elections for chief executive himself.^[7][8] Anticipating the rise of India and Silicon Valley, he co-founded (and later directed) McKinsey offices in Silicon Valley in the 1980s and in India in the 1990s. During the dot-com bubble he headed McKinsey's technology and Internet consulting operations, where he and Gupta created a program to allow the firm to accept stock in lieu of consulting fees.^[9][10] At McKinsey Kumar was also Chairman of the Knowledge Center and Chairman of the Asia Center.^[11][12] He was a director and corporate officer of the firm. He lived and worked from multiple offices in New Delhi, New York, and Silicon Valley, traveling over thirty thousand miles a month.^[13][14]

Kumar co-founded the Indian School of Business in 1997, today ranked among the top 15 business schools in the world by The Financial Times.^[15][16] He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Young Presidents' Organization, a founding charter member of TiE, and was the US chairman of India's largest business lobby, the Confederation of Indian Industry.^[17]

Criticism of Kumar centered around his close relationship with Gupta and a perception of arrogance. According to The Financial Times, “the two operated as a forceful double-act to secure business for McKinsey, win access in Washington and build a brotherhood of donors around the Hyderabad-based ISB and a handful of social initiatives.”^[18] Also, “as much as Mr Kumar was admired for his business ability and sharpness, he also drew fire for what was seen as his arrogance.”^[17]

Galleon case[link]

Kumar maintained an intentionally low profile outside McKinsey until an October 2009 arrest in conjunction with an ongoing and wide-ranging US governmental investigation into insider trading.^[19] Former mentor Rajat Gupta was later arrested by the FBI in a related case,^[20] prompting inquiries into McKinsey’s senior leadership and business model.^[21][22]

As of December 2009, Kumar was no longer at the consultancy.^[23] In January 2010 he pleaded guilty to insider trading charges^[24] and was the government’s star witness in March 2011 in U.S. v Rajaratnam against his billionaire friend and Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam.^[25][26] In the sprawling case his involvement was unusual; according to a Reuters blog, “He’s the only informant who could be considered even more successful than Raj was, at least professionally if not in terms of raw cash. Raj had money, more money than he really knew what to do with, but Kumar had much more societal acceptance and prestige.”^[27] He settled with the SEC in May 2010 for $2.8 million, the amount after gains he received from Rajaratnam through a Swiss bank account in a domestic worker's name.^[28] Gupta, Rajaratnam, and Kumar were all close friends and had founded the $1.3-billion private equity firm New Silk Route together, though Rajaratnam and Kumar withdrew before the firm began operation.^[29]

Kumar was represented by the late Robert Morvillo,^[30] who had previously led billionaire Martha Stewart’s defense in her own insider trading case.^[31][32]

He also testified in the May 2012 criminal trial of Rajat Gupta.^[33][34]

International media, business, and finance industry observers have analyzed extensively his actions in aiding Rajaratnam.^{[1][35][36][37]} Consensus remains divided on the precise motivators of money, respect, and relationship, with The New York Times asking, “Why would people who seem to have it all — wealth, prestige, powerful jobs and infinite access to others with the same — risk that, and more, to provide inside information to the Sri Lankan-born billionaire?”^[38] Rajaratnam's annual payments were estimated at less than 5% of Kumar's annual income (and just 1-2% excluding a one-time bonus), further raising the question of motivation.^[39]

Kumar attended high school at The Doon School. He maintained an intentionally low external profile, traveling over thirty thousand miles a month.^[13][14] He lived and worked for decades in New Delhi, New York, and Silicon Valley simultaneously. He had a Manhattan apartment in the Time Warner Center and a house in Saratoga, California.^[14]

Jwala Gutta (Telugu: గుత్తా జ్వాలా, Chinese: 贾瓦拉 固体他) is a left-handed Indian badminton player of mixed Indian and Chinese descent who has won the National Badminton Championships thirteen times until 2010. She is one of the best women's doubles badminton players produced by India in recent times, partnering with Shruti Kurien and later Ashwini Ponnappa. She was the wife of Chetan Anand, an Arjuna Awardee; however, the two divorced in 2011.^[2]

Early life[link]

Jwala was born on 7 September 1983 in Wardha, Maharashtra and brought up in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, to a Telugu Indian father and a Chinese mother. Jwala's father, Kranti Gutta, hailed from a family of freedom fighters and Leftists.^[3] Her mother, Yelan Gutta, was born in Tianjin, and is a granddaughter of a Gandhian named Tseng. Yelan first came to India in 1977 with her grandfather to visit the Sevagram ashram, where he translated Gandhi's autobiography and other works into Chinese language.^[4] She married Kranti in 1982 and settled in Hyderabad in 1988.^[5]

Performance in Women’s Doubles[link]

In the doubles event though, her performance has been better as entered the Semi Final round of her second International Doubles tournament, the India Asia Satellite tournament 2002. She also reached the Semi Final round of the Indian Asian Satellite tournament 2004, and finished Runner Up at the LE VOLANT D’OR Tournament, known as TOULOUSE Open in the year 2004. Further, she reached the Final Rounds of the Scottish International tournament 2004 and 40th Portuguese Badminton Championship 2004. In the year 2006 she won the Sri Lanka International Satellite tournament while in the year 2007 she won the Cyprus Badminton International tournament. The same year, she also won at the Pakistan International Challenge tournament and the Indian International Challenge tournament. Apart from these achievements, Jwala won the Nepal International Series tournament 2008 and Yonex Dutch Open Grand Prix 2008 in the Women’s Doubles category. She won a Gold medal in Women Doubles in Commonwealth Games 2010 making history of winning the 1st gold medal in women doubles. Later on this year she again made a history by being the 1st women doubles pair to win a bronze medal in world championships 2011.

Performance in Mixed Doubles[link]

In the Mixed Doubles category too, Jwala has shown her excellence as she has grabbed the titles in the Jakarta Satellite tournament and Welsh International tournament in the year 2005, Sri Lanka International Satellite tournament, Cyprus Badminton International tournament and Indian International Challenge tournament in the year 2007, and Nepal International Series tournament, Bitburger Open Grand Prix tournament and KLRC Bulgaria Open Grand Prix tournament in the year 2008. But the latest achievement in December 2009 where she and her mixed doubles partner Diju reached the World Super Series masters final in Malaysia, where they went down to world championship bronze medalists Christinna Pedersen and Joaquim Nielsen 21-14, 21-18.Jwala also won a gold medal in the prestigious Commonwealth Games 2010 which was held in India.

During her Badminton career, Jwala Gutta began dating fellow badminton player Chetan Anand, who was the 1999 Junior National Badminton Champion and 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2010 Senior National Badminton Champion and has been honored with an Arjuna Award. The couple married on 17 July 2005 and got divorced on 29th June 2011.
