3d logo design - Logo Design behind the Scenes
Tutorial overview:
A successful logo design needs to be both professional and functional. It might be the first piece of branding someone sees relating to a company, so it should make a positive impression. So I’ll share my techniques and experience in Logo Design behind the Scenes. I walks through the fundamental decisions, such as what information to include, what size and orientation the logo should have, and whether to use in corporate identity, TV production, Web publishing. I demonstrate how to set up a template and work with type alignment and color. Also discusses animation techniques and preparing the file for printing, TV production, Web Publishing. How to integrate and fill the gap between 6 software is my goal in this tutorial. I'll use Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe after Effects, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver.
Topics covered:
Quick Sketching
Logo Exploration
Logo Modeling
Producing Logo to several illustrators formats
Animation approach
Animation Composition
Web Animation and production
3d logo design - Logo Design behind the Scenes - Part 1
01: Intro Goals.
02: 1st stage Sketching ideas.
03: Modeling, Texturing, Lighting, Rendering and Detail Design.
04: Put the logo into Layout.
05: Illustration stage.
06: 2nd stage animation.
3d logo design - Logo Design behind the Scenes - Part 2
07: animation composition and finalize exporting HD.
08: 3rd stage Web Production.
09: Final Design, animation inside HTML page.
Details:
01: Intro Goals
In the first stage we have a look to our goals before we start working to know who exactly we should do. We will prepare our logo to be ready for printing, TV production and Web Publishing. As a designing apprentice I have always asked myself what is the best method for designing something or that particular logo. It is evident that you can apply different methods for doing the same logo, but the quality of the output might vary according to the method you use.
02: 1st stage Sketching ideas
Then the process of swirling out your ideas begins. It doesn't matter if the sketch looks like monotone; you are just throwing ideas down onto a white blank page at the moment. I used tablet here. Just try to find ideas and concepts using balance. What I mean with balance is our logo should be physically balanced inside our design. Just imagine if you create that logo in real life with clay or wood and try to put it on a flat surface it should be stable balanced. Once I had placed some ideas down on paper you can scan them in and dive into your image editor of choice if you would like. I'm using Adobe Photoshop for this one. The method I use to create logo could be wildly different from someone else so go with whatever method feels comfortable. The end result will be a series of scaled resources that the OS will use in different views.

Modeling
For a non-organic bending object such as the subject of this tutorial it is wise to use polygonal modeling unless you care about the quality. Polygon modeling has always fascinated me especially with the accuracy it provides for making industrial models and its flexibility. The good thing about Autodesk Maya is that it provides both a strong NURBS system and a multi-optional NURBS to polygon conversion dialog, where by we can convert our detailed NURBS model to a polygonal object with the desired number of faces.
The aim of this tutorial is to provide a practical guide for the novice Polygon modeler, whereby he/she can practice the basic methods through designing a somewhat complex object. Of course, this tutorial does not cover all Polygon commands but rather most of them.
Now observe and contemplate the above sketching image for a moment; try to visualize it from front, the front view: that's the key point in making the logo.
First we will begin with a set of primitives for different logo parts. I make a sphere (polygon sphere) then 4 twisted cubes. To make twisted cubes in Maya it's just easy. Make a cube then go to deformers panel and use the twisting toll. After made a 1 twisted cube, duplic

Embedded UX - A Nerdery Interactive Primer
Matt: Welcome everybody to this month’s interactive primer. This month we are talking embedded UX. We’ll get to the definition of that in a little bit. Just to explain who we are, we’re The Nerdery, we are an interactive development shop that works with agencies and Fortune 1000 companies. We work with anybody, really. But what we do is, we’re kind of the backend developer to a lot of projects. You guys’ll come up with art and stuff like that and then we will take your idea and develop it for you. A few stats on us, and actually these are probably like 2 months out of date again but, it says we have 176 people working here I’m pretty sure it’s at like 196 or we might be over 200 within the next few days. Over 100 of those people are developers, so it’s like an army of developers here. We’ve worked on tons of projects. Right now it says 3600, I think it was 3800 when I checked it this morning, but, we’re doing tons of work and like I said that’s a 2 month difference so 25 people and an extra couple hundred projects in 2 months.
A little housekeeping on the presentation today: This webinar is broadcast only so we can talk to you but you cannot talk back to us. There will be a slide coming up on ways you can submit your questions. Other things, we are recording this right now. We have the video, we have slides, we have all this stuff, and expect that on our blog sometime in the next week. Let’s introduce our speakers today. First up is Mike.
Mike: Hi guys, this is Mike. I’m the Director of User Experience here at The Nerdery. I’ve built a 13 person UX team, 13th guy is starting in May. What’s up, Zack? We’ve been doing UX for about 3 years here at The Nerdery. A year and a half of that was just me. Demand has increased tremendously. In the last year we did 5500 hours of UX-only work, which is roughly 3.7 person years if you stack it end to end. If the direct sales team here meets their goals we’re expecting to double by the end the year. My co-presenter here is Nick Tietz.
Nick: Hi, I’m Nick. I’m the Senior User Experience Designer here at The Nerdery. I’ve been here for about 2 years, and we’re just kicking ass and taking names.
Matt: All right, so here’s the slide. If you guys have any questions there’s 3 ways you can send them in. Feel free to send them in, if they’re in the middle of talking about something and an idea pops into your head don’t feel worried that you’re going to interrupt them. I’m moderating them but you can send them using the questions panel in the GoToMeeting app, send them to us on Twitter @The_Nerdery or send us an email at primers@nerdery.com
Mike: All right, so let’s kick this off. Here at The Nerdery we have a concept we like to call Project DNA. We work with a lot of different types of clients. We’ve got the agency partners, which Matt touched on briefly, where we’re essentially the technical back side of the project and the designs come all baked from the agency and we just execute on them. We work with direct clients, big corporations, smaller companies that have ideas and strategies that they need executed and part of that is UX and design. So, we’re used to engaging in a variety of different scenarios. The way we like to look at it is all of our clients have something they can bring to the table. Whether they have a freelance designer they hired or they’ve already done all their market research or they want to use our research. We’re totally open to that, we don’t force our clients into a specific streamlined process. What we like to do is kind of identify what you guys bring to the table and fill in the gaps to create a complete project. That’s something we do on a lot of different projects and if there’s a conflict, if we work with an agency and “hey, we do user research and you do user research” that can all be figured out during the planning phase to figure out who does what. Just a quick “what is UX?” for those who are fairly new to it: UX is user experience and, as a field, it’s fairly new. I guess you could call it an emerging field. It’s been incubating for years under different guises. When people think of design they traditionally think of how something looks or how pretty something is but in UX we’re really more concerned with how something functions. We want things to work well, we want them to accomplish goals, so the simplest definition of UX that we’ve come up with is we want to take the goals of your users or your customers, we want to take the goals of your business, how you want to make money, and we want to align that with the application or the interface that we’re developing for you.
Nick: So, for example, you want to make it easier for your users to sign up, or find information, or register. Our goal is really to understand, using a user-centered design processes: What do your users need to do? What do you want them to do? What do they want to do? Then mak

Description
This video reconstructs a 24-hour-long performance called "An Ordinary 24 Hours", which happened on a public site in front of a Frenk Gehry budildng in Iowa City, on the University campus.
An ongoing sunrise -to-sunrise performance explored publicly exposed situations and states of conflict. It was heavily structured to allow for public–interactive improvisations to occur. The audience and random passers by were challenged to participate as actors, witnesses or observers. The period of 24 hours was divided into cycles of three hours. During the first hour in the cycle (the hour of creation) an improvisational performance would get created based on set scenes’ titles, in the second hour (the performance) it would be performed and in the third hour (the documentation) it would get documented, written about and stored into files.
This “trilogy” was repeated 8 times.
During the repetition, the content of the performance, of the creation and the documentation period have been continuously and slightly changed only:
-due to the interaction with the audience in this public site,
-in response to the changing weather, temperature, and the participants’ physical, mental and psychological conditions,
-in order to explore the believability of scenes of conflict, which do not get accompanied with their resolutions
Throughout the repetition cycles of creating and re-creating, performing and re-performing, documenting and re-documenting, some slight changes occurred only:
-due to the interaction with the audience in this public site,
-in response to the changing weather, temperature, and the participants’ physical, mental and psychological conditions,
-in order to explore the believability of scenes of conflict, which do not get resolved
During the 24-hours of enacting, re-creating and re-documenting the same scenes of conflicts, the audience witnessed the performers’ physical and psychological efforts to sustain the matrix of the pre-determined process of repetition. The performers’ task was to get the audience to participate by improvising roles that would be assigned to them or to bring into the performance any other form of audience interaction, be it ignoring, commenting, criticizing or playing along.
The challenge was to balance, on one hand, the task of delving into the “reality” of exponential conflicts, and on the other, the mechanical process of arriving to an “understanding” or a template through the form of repetition. A sense of “reality” and of “understanding” was to be obtained through methodical examination of states of conflict in a context of repetitive and continuous paradigms. The mechanical and meditative nature of the repetition matrix (the cycle of three hours of the performance) suggested a method of arriving to a point of perfection (the truth of the matter), and/or to a point of de-sensitization.
There was a certain sense of urgency, which resulted from the intense interactions between the site, the building, the performers among themselves and with the audience, and the given time, temperature and weather oscillations, over and over again.
It resembled a vigil.

Screeb'r
This video clip is a part of the Business Plan we had to make for our final diploma at HETIC Paris, France (IT Business School). The other part is a functional prototype of Screeb'r. Here a short description of the concept:
Screeb'r is a simple service focusing on the creation, dissemination and consumption of rich content on tablets.
We believe that the blogging tool, as we know it, today ought to be rethought of, in order to make the most out of content. New touchscreen devices, including the tablet, have brought about dramatic changes within the publishing industry. Thriving on the social media revolution (particularly media sharing apps such as Instagram, Soundcloud, Vimeo...) and new disruptive technologies, a free space has come up, focusing on the consumption of creative content developed by tablet users. Among others, pretty typographies, beautiful templates or nice photos, not to mention the intelligence of social graph, offer an innovative, unrivalled reading experience. The combination of empathy and powerful social graph into rich and creative universes allows content optimisation and a wonderful immersive experience.
The tablet market is today monopolized by Apple's iPad. The product therefore lays down the standards of the tablet format ; in other words a tool entirely dedicated to information consumption. An everyday companion gathering videos and books, news and videogames, i.e. the entire realm of our cultural industries in a comfortable format. In order to get away from consumer electronics, put users at the heart of our processes, emancipate the iPad and the other digital devices from the strict control of media giants, we have come up with Screeb'r. While others understand the iPad as the gravestone of the web 2.0, we on the other hand believe that the tablet lends itself perfectly to the creation business and the principles of sharing. Screeb'r aims to introduce the power of User Generated Content to tablets. It intends to enhance the mental universes of a wide range of people, through a media device tailored to personal use. While it does not require an advanced knowledge of aesthetic codes and web jargon (colons, banners, blog posts...), Screeb'r essentially promotes a visual experience similar to a magazine. The objects created by Screeb'r are designed with improvement in mind. Quality is made tangible, encouraging people to determine how and what kind of information they want to produce, consume and ultimately recommend to others.
Screeb'r is simple, and is designed to serve the creativity of everyone. The pursuit of quality is our paramount guideline, both in the production and the reception of content.
