Cody Wilson - Inventor of 3D Printer Guns Gets Shut Down By Government
3D printing guru Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed announced that the US Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance, Enforcement Division (DTCC/END) had sent him a letter requesting the group remove all data supposedly in violation of the Arms Export Control Act from public access immediately on his website at http://defcad.org.
The State Department's Office of Defense Trade Controls (DTCC) have shut down the Austin Texas based 3D printing company.
"I think information will be free, and it wants to be." Cody said May 9th, 2012 when the State Department's Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance (DTCC) Enforcement Division had issued a take down notice to Austin-based 3D gun printing company Defense Distributed declaring the group's open distribution of 3D gun part files on the Internet potentially violated export laws explicit in the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, or ITAR.
The notice came just days after the group finally managed a fully-functional gun using mainly parts printed from a 3D printer, and aimed to have Defense Distributed take down the offending files and cite their "procedures for determining proper jurisdiction of technical data," data which, at this point the DTCC says, could be in violation of § 127.1 of the ITAR.
"As an arms manufacturer, we registered ITAR, but we thought since Defense Distributed would be a non-profit software company; we could not have to register for ITAR because we were just a software company and not interested in actual trade of arms, and then number 2, we could basically claim a public domain exemption from the ITAR and we wouldn't have to ask permission to put the files up for download."
Gun-related files, Wilson claims, are already regulated and must be permitted before they can be distributed online, but since the beginning, the group has tried to avoid asking government for permission, not to flout the laws, but because they believed they met public domain exemptions.
According to Wilson, the fact that the DTCC cites specific pieces of the ITAR is an indication that they may plan to bring criminal prosecutions of civil penalties against the group.
"So it's not a good day for the project, but it was expected, and we released, especially the Liberator, in such a good way that it's definitely online forever and, especially with news of this censorship, I don't think it will ever disappear. So that's a success even if Defense Distributed or DefCad is somehow indefinitely shut down."
Wilson says the group knew what they were up against long before the project even started by studying the case of Phil Zimmermann, the inventor of the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption program who in 1993 was under investigation by the United States Customs Service.
Similarly, in that case, law enforcement wanted to see if Zimmermann's software violated federal arms-export laws because the technology could be considered a munition in that, being readily available online, it made it too difficult to determine what kinds of files, transactions and emails were being exchanged and what countries they came from and went to.
As was the case with Zimmermann, Wilson hoped the popularization and widespread distribution of his group's gun files would lead the State Department to reconsider, if not altogether dump, an investigative effort.
"And to me, I understand that this software seems more closely related to guns so it might be a different case, but the parallels seemed pretty strong. At the end of the day, these are just bits, they're not actual bombs."
The frantic rush to regulate the data was no doubt accelerated by Defense Distributed's recent successes -- printable 30-round AR magazines and lower receivers that could withstand more than 650 rounds and of course their latest conquest, the single-shot pistol known as the Liberator.

The indie rock band Modest Mouse is getting the royal treatment from Bent Image Lab’s new director/partner Nando Costa. Just completed, the band’s new music video is a dark and expressive piece of film-making. Heavily rooted in live-action, the impressive six-minute video includes intense moments of stop motion, visual effects, and motion graphics techniques, all brought to life within the studio’s walls.
The visuals follow an artist who enters his personal sanctuary where he is presented with a hand-crafted drawing tool that assists him in materializing his mental impressions. Through drawing circular patterns, the machine discharges an endless web of yarn that guides him through his visual representations of his memories. The story progresses to reveal that he is divided between two worlds, one of dull reality and the second of warped memories. In the process of finding a way out of his consciousness, he is trapped between the two competing spaces, which eventually inflict lethal damage, acting as metaphors to self-destruction.
This lyrical and moving piece was conceived by Nando Costa working closely with lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock to polish some of the film's intricacies. Featuring a seamless combination of live-action and stop motion that alternates between stage shots of Modest Mouse and a spiraling dream-like world of ever-shifting landscapes, Whale Song is a stunning representation of the combined capabilities of Nando and Bent. The variety and execution of the VFX portions of the video – from yarn reeling into complex patterns to a guitar that plays with no musician attached – strongly evoke the confused and surreal patterns of one's warped memories. Additional creative touches such as animated and intricate photographic collages and giant CG snails sliding across the band's stage – add variety and depth to the surreal world.
“This new video is the perfect showcase for the benefits of the collaboration between myself and Bent,” noted Costa. “I typically wouldn't have created a film with this much live-action or stop motion, and Bent also wouldn't normally approach a project with such a strong motion graphics influence, which is what I have long specialized in. With such well integrated in-house teams, I can’t imagine that there’s a project out there that we couldn’t pull off.”
One of the challenges in Whale Song was to recreate the contours of an ever changing, disorienting and intriguing series of landscapes. Costa shot the majority of the piece with Bent’s RED One cameras, which came in handy for their 4K capabilities when adding camera movement in post. In order to create the feeling that lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock was being split up between two competing scenarios of pure reality and his imagination, for example, Costa mounted two of the RED cameras side by side on a custom plate, each with identical lenses set at an angle to simulate a stereoscopic effect.
In another instance, band members that appeared to be standing on the ground were actually hoisted aloft and secured to a fake ground plane, which meant that the stage floor was perpendicular to the ground. This situation intentionally restrained their flexibility and shifted the gravity, adding oddness to their movements.
Costa used a variety of frame rates, ranging from time-lapses at 6 frames per second, to 1000 fps shots from a Phantom camera to give the feeling of variety of speed in the character's memories. Blue screen stages were used extensively to place Isaac against the varying landscapes of mountains, dense forest valleys, and deserts. Bent's CG department was also responsible for creating significant portions of the video's landscapes and scenic elements.
During production, Nando and his team relied solely on a very detailed script containing technical and creative notes, live-action and animation guidelines, with specifications for composting and stop motion, which were all previously defined and polished by the director. “From what I’ve learned, producing a project at Bent is a wonderfully self-contained experience,” noted Costa. “From building intricate props to figuring out complex CG shots, Bent has specialists in all fields. I’ll walk over to the stage for live-action, then back to compositing, load the footage and work from there. It makes the whole process immeasurably easier, and creatively freeing.”
“Seeing this video makes me feel good about what we’ve done here at Bent”, stated Bent EP Ray Di Carlo”. We set out to establish a creative clubhouse atmosphere where talented people like Nando could come to work. I’ve always admired directors who can hold a project’s final vision in their minds eye and are able to let the talents around them do their respective jobs for a pr

We ask a OPD officer why he had his name badge covered....
This how to properly engage with police when they do suspicious things. We were riding by on bikes and noticed he's hiding his name and has no badge number. So we decided to ask him. He did not answer. we asked a ranking officer is that policy? The LT. quickly went about fixing his attitude. This is a common practice among cops at occupy's around the US .That way he/she cannot be named or referenced if he/she participates in police misconduct . Its in most police departments policies that all officers in uniform must show some form of identification. OPD does not wear badges with #'s, how do we hold anyone accountable?
THANKS OPD LT C.WONG for stepping up and holding the officer accountable on camera!
Update:
1. I did not have my face covered and Im not some out of town punk. I am a proud Black Male resident of OAKLAND
2. I never stated the cop had evil intentions.Im just tired of cops getting away with shit because there is no proof.
3.I posted this video because of the officers ATTITUDE. We asked him politely why over 10 times. no answer and was trying to give me the intimidation stare. We remained respectful and non violent. Thats what cops ask for right?
4. All the officer had to say was...I'm hiding my name for my families safety. I dont want my family harassed. Then I would NOT have posted the video.
5. This is for OSCAR GRANT!
6. I have been slamed to the ground, had guns pointed at me, hit with nightsticks and held in handcuff being humiliated by POLICE and was NEVER arrested. KARMA just came back to equal out all the times cops have violated me and my friends!

3. Each officer shall wear a badge, nameplate, or other device on the outside of his or her uniform or on his or her helmet which bears the identification number or the name of the officer, as required by Penal Code § 830.10.
The number or name shall be clearly visible at all times. The letters or numerals on helmets,

The Long-Life-Span Smartphone. A great idea, as I am tired of getting a new phone every 2 years. Check out all the Ideas here http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/19/magazine/ideas2010.html
From the article:
"In the United States, a cellphone’s average life span is 18 months, and yet fewer than 1 percent of these phones are estimated to be recycled. As an antidote to this pattern of rapid obsolescence, the British design-consulting firm Kinneir Dufort developed its Revive smartphone concept, proposing a device that can evolve over time rather than be cast aside when it breaks or something newer and shinier hits the market. Unlike existing products on the market, it would be designed for easy disassembly, so the end user could replace or upgrade components without tossing the entire phone.
Service providers and manufacturers would be able to charge for these improvements, replacing revenue they would have earned from selling new phones. To help it age gracefully, Revive would be made from materials — leathers, metals and plastic composites — that acquire a patina from wear. A service subscription, meanwhile, would offer the user credits the longer he held on to the phone, making him a “stakeholder” with an investment in the longevity of the product." JESSE ASHLOCK

"The Right Blend" for Scott Naturals
Scott Naturals was a rare chance for myself and the team at Bent to explore the commercial and artistic possibilities of Strata Cut animation technique with a series of stenciled out paper sheets, which were lined up in deep continuing space.
This Strata Stencil idea was first explored by animator Javen Ivey in his 2006 thesis project ‘My Paper Mind’ at Pratt, partly inspired by Bent partner David Daniels’ original plasticine technique. After graduate school, Javen later came to intern at the Bent. Aaron Noffsinger from the Tris3ct agency in Chicago was also very familiar with David’s Strata Cut, and thought it would be a great artistic starting point for Scott's first broadcast spot, and a great exploration into the animation realm.
I was brought into the project as a director to design and conceptualize with David using “Paper Mind’ as an influence, but not an ultimate destination. Together, we created a more complex and highly produced space. Executing it all in CG as opposed to by hand, was an absolute production necessity due to timing and content changes up to the very end of the short deadline.
We explored both negative and positive spaces in the stencil effect, and also introduced a very unique “Rolodex effect“ that was made out of animated cut-out layers overlapping each other over an long camera shot. The clean factor of CG forced us to find ways to add irregularities to the paper, as well as and color and exposure shifts to bring back more of the ‘folk’ accessibility and ‘hand made charm’ to the audience.
Creating some of the silhouetted stenciled shapes in CG also allowed us to do some interesting slight perspective changes. It’s brief and underplayed, but helps the subliminal flow and clarity of each scene.
We used a physical (practically shot) paper towel roll at the end from which pull out with the assistance of a motion controlled camera. This assured the realism we were looking for in the end product tableau, while continuing the flow and drama of a continuous camera move coming out from the CG world.
In its essence the project was highly technical and demanded constant collaboration between our compositing and CG teams, but it allowed us enough creative space to experiment and innovate in many ways.

Obama Accuses Opponents Of 'Political Circus,Calls Benghazi Talking Points Controversy A Sideshow
During a joint press conference with the British Prime Minister David Cameron this morning, President Obama went off on his political opponents and the press for the controversy over his administration's Benghazi talking points, calling the entire ordeal a "political circus" and "sideshow" with "no there there."
Asked by the Associated Press about the unfolding controversy, which included last week's House Oversight Committee hearings with several State Department whistleblowers as well as revelations that the administration repeatedly revised its talking points in the wake of the attacks to omit key facts, Obama proceeded to scold his opponents: "The whole issue of talking point, frankly, throughout this process, has been a sideshow. We have been very clear about throughout that immediately after this event happened we were not clear who exactly had carried it out, how it had occurred, what the motivations were. It happened at the same time as we had seen attacks on U.S. embassies in Cairo as a consequence of this film and nobody understood exactly what was taking place during the course of those first few days. And the e-mails that you allude to were provided by us to congressional committees. They reviewed them several months ago, concluded that in fact there was nothing awful in terms of the process that we had used. And suddenly, three days ago, this gets spun up as if there is something new to the story. There is no there there."
He expressed astonishment that some among his political colleagues would consider the possibility that his administration actively tried to "downplay" the Benghazi attacks:
"So if this was some effort on our part to try to downplay what had happened or tamp it down, that would be a pretty odd thing that three days later we end up putting out all the information that, in fact, has now served as the basis for everybody recognizing that this was a terrorist attack and that it may have included elements that were planned by extremists inside of Libya. Who executes some sort of cover-up or effort to tamp things down for three days? The whole thing defies logic."
He then accused his opponents of hyping the controversy for political gain: "And the fact that this keeps on getting churned out, frankly, has a lot to do with political motivations. We've had folks who have challenged Hillary Clinton's integrity, Susan Rice's integrity, Mike Mullen and Tom Pickering's integrity. It is a given that mine gets challenged by these same folks. They used it for fundraising, and, frankly, you know, if anybody out there wants to actually focus on how we make sure something like this does not happen again, I am happy to get their advice and information and counsel."
The president concluded by chiding his opponents for turning the controversy into a "political circus":
"We dishonor [State Department employees] when we, you know, we turn things like this into a political circus. What happened was tragic, it was carried out by extremists inside of Libya. We are out there trying to hunt down the folks who carried this out and we're trying to make sure we fix the system so that it doesn't happen again."
