KOTJ Radio | Episode 7: Jubilee

To celebrate our first birthday we asked two of our favourite DJs, BD1982 and Jubilee, to put together a mix each so we could release them both instead of the usual once-a-month deal. We put Brian’s mix out two weeks ago and now it’s Jess’s turn.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jubilee has been a staple of the heavy bass scene for some time now. As well as running Nightshifters alongside Donna Summer, she also puts on the Flashing Lights parties with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres.

On top of all that, she is also one half of Bassanovva with Grahmzilla. The two have an EP out on Sinden‘s Grizzly imprint. Check that out here and browse the beatport chart she put together to listen to some of the tracks featured in her mix.

Mogwai to release new LP on Sub Pop

Post Rock luminaries Mogwai are set to release their seventh full-length LP on the legendary Sub Pop. The new LP, entitled ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’, features the single ‘Rano Pano’ which is available for free download on Sub Pop’s website, for the princely sum of your e-mail address.

A 7″ of the single will be available January 18th. Go here to download the track and look at the artwork and tracklist.

Debut release from Talk on Nightshifters

One of the most recent signings to Nightshifters, Talk, has released his first EP on the imprint. The new EP, entitled ‘Holy Mountain’, came out yesterday and promises a sound described as “cinematic” and “gutteral”.

As always, Nightshifters have brought out the dark and dirty side of their musicians. I know we’ve featured most of the NS releases on here but it’s simply because they’re consistantly solid. It’s really impressive the way Jason Forrest and Jubilee have created this label: the striking visual aesthetics and the thoughtfully selected artists combine to inspire their DJs to create genuinely unique productions.

The EP includes four original productions (‘Holy Mountain’, ‘Finland’, ‘Burning Alive’ and ‘Walking Disease’) as well as four remixes from newcomes Distal and Skinnz, and blog house veterans Deathface and LOL Boys.

Download the mp3 of the title track and then grab the rest of the release on Beatport, iTunes and Juno.

To celebrate the birth of Mad Decent‘s founding father Wesley “Diplo” Pentz, some vagabond has uploaded the original 38 minute Florida DVD in its entirety. That’s it up there.

Free Girl Talk LP on Illegal Art

The brains behind Girl Talk, Gregg Gillis, has released a free LP on Illegal Art dripping with samples. The follow up to 2008′s ‘Feed The Animals’ is called ‘All Day’ and is available to download from Illegal Art here.

In support of the LP Gillis will be embarking on a massive tour. You can check the dates here.

KOTJ Radio | Episode 6: BD1982

This month Kick Out The Jam celebrates its first birthday and to celebrate we’ve got two – yes, two – mixtapes for you lovely shits. The first is from our good friend BD1982 and the second is from Nightshifters co-big cheese, Jubilee.

Episode six of our podcast series comes from Yokohama resident BD1982. Including Makumba Sound, Roska, XLII and Untold; it also features a couple of BD1982 originals, as well as his remix of ‘Mommy’ by Planet Soap.

The tape kicks off with an awesome blend of samples before throwing us headlong into a dubby dancehall number. It ties in all my favourite styles of tropical, funky, dancehall, dubstep and house into this really awesome dark trip that almost delves into the realms of IDM at points.

Honestly, just listen for yourself. Either download it below or stream at our Mixcloud page. It’s a great place to start if you want an idea of the BD1982 sound. Also, be sure to grab a copy of the awesome ‘Trails’ EP I wrote about here.
