Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music.

Summary:
By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.
There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle.
This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists.
The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded.

Summary:
Discovered in the archives of the late promoter Bill Graham, this excellent live recording of Wishbone Ash was made in April 1976 as the band was promoting Locked In, an album they had made with producer Tom Dowd, best known for his work with Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, and the Allman Brothers.
After arranging much of the dual guitar work between Clapton and Duane Allman on the Derek & The Dominoes LP and with Dickey Betts and Duane Allman on the early Allman Brothers records, Dowd was a logical choice for the dueling guitars of Wishbone Ash. Although the band never saw the success that any of the Clapton bands or the Allmans did, they built a solid following of guitar-hero worshiping fans. This was their second time at Winterland, where they had previously played in 1973.
Wishbone Ash began as a blues-based guitar band and eventually became a progressive rock force. They formed in the late-1960s, with guitarist Andy Powell, bassist Martin Turner, second guitarist Ted Turner, and drummer Steve Upton. They were quickly scooped up by rock manager Miles Copeland, years before he would spearhead the careers of Sting, his brother Stuart Copeland, and Andy Summers. Copeland got them an opening slot with Deep Purple, and one day when guitarist Andy Powell was jamming with Purple's Ritchie Blackmore at a sound check, they were offered a record deal with Decca Records in the U.K.
The group released four studio albums in four years, growing in popularity with each record. They were faves of the British press, and in many ways offered as a sort of U.K counterpart to what the Allman Brothers Band were doing with dual guitars in the United States. After the release of Wishbone Four in 1974, Ted Turner left the band and was replaced by Laurie Wisefield, who remained with Wishbone Ash through the late- 1980s. Bassist and founder Martin Turner would also leave for a time and was replaced by former King Crimson and future Asia bassist John Wetton.
This show featured the Powell/Martin Turner/Wisefield/Upton lineup, and is unique for also featuring a keyboard player in the mix. The set was performed in a year where they released two different studio albums on two different labels (MCA and Atlantic); although the band thought a move to Atlantic would help them dominate the charts in the U.S., after one disappointing album the band returned to their deal with MCA.
Hard core fans of the band will love this performance. Wishbone Ash has essentially remained a cult favorite, never really achieving widespread commercial success. The original lineup did reunite for one LP and tour in 1992, and today Powell lives in Connecticut and Turner remains in the U.K. There have been two different versions of Wishbone Ash touring since the mid-1990s, with both musicians fighting over the right to the name.

Summary:
After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year's Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the time of this show, the self-titled debut in '76 and the 1978 follow-up You're Gonna Get It!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick things off with "Surrender" before launching into "Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll" and proceed to play an hour and a half of early hits, carving out their signature sound of rollicking heartland rock to the Winterland audience. "Casadega" is a pretty, lesser-known ode about a town in Florida, and then Petty gets into the rest of his set with many of the favorites that have made him a household name: "I Need to Know," "Refugee," "Listen To Her Heart," "American Girl," and "Breakdown," all renditions of classic songs that don't, at this early stage of their career, bear the stamp of time that today weathers many Petty compositions. Petty chats with the audience, telling a funny story about a card game the night before introducing "another new song, Refugee."
Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida and embraces an all-American sensibility in his songwriting, which recalls that of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Bruce Springsteen. Much of his compositions have a raucous vibe but are rooted in strong characters and stories of the downtrodden heroes of our culture. At 17, Petty left school to join Mudcrutch, who then relocated to LA just before breaking up. Petty remained active with some other musical ensembles before honing his songwriting skills with the Heartbreakers, and in 1976 the band released their self-titled debut, which was first a hit in England before American audiences caught on. A few years later, they released their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes which spent seven weeks at number two on the US charts. And the rest, as they say, is history, and today Petty is one of rock's most respected, enduring, and best loved performers.

The Winterland Ballroom, often referred to as Winterland Arena or simply Winterland, was an ice skating rink and 5,400-seat music venue in San Francisco, California. Located at the corner of Post Street and Steiner Street, it was converted to exclusive use as a music venue in 1971 by rock promoter Bill Graham and became a common performance site for many of the most famous rock music artists.
Winterland was built in 1928 for the then astronomical cost of $1 million. Opening on June 29, 1928, it was originally known as the "New Dreamland Auditorium." Sometime in the late 1930s, the name was changed to Winterland. It served as an ice skating rink that could be converted to an entertainment venue. Early acts/shows at Winterland included Shipstads and Johnson Ice Follies.It also was host to opera, boxing, and tennis.

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949), nicknamed "The Boss," is an American singer-songwriter-performer who records and tours with the E Street Band. Springsteen is widely known for his brand of heartland rock, poetic lyrics, and Americana sentiments centered on his native New Jersey.
Springsteen's recordings have included both commercially accessible rock albums and more somber folk-oriented works. His most successful studio albums, Born in the U.S.A. and Born to Run, showcase a talent for finding grandeur in the struggles of daily American life; he has sold more than 65 million albums in the United States and more than 120 million worldwide and he has earned numerous awards for his work, including 21 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award. He is widely regarded by many as one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century, and in 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him as the 23rd Greatest Artist of all time.
Springsteen was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and spent his childhood and high school years in Freehold Borough. He lived on South Street in Freehold Borough and attended Freehold Borough High School. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, was of Dutch and Irish ancestry and worked, among other vocations, as a bus driver, although he was frequently unemployed; his surname is Dutch for jump stone. His mother, Adele Ann (née Zerilli), was a legal secretary and was of Italian ancestry. His maternal grandfather was born in Vico Equense, a city near Naples. He has two younger sisters, Virginia and Pamela. Pamela had a brief film career, but left acting to pursue still photography full time; she took photos for the Human Touch and Lucky Town albums.

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. He is widely considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in music history, and one of the most influential musicians of his era despite mainstream exposure limited to just three years. After initial success in Europe with his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, he headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. He often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback.
Hendrix helped to popularize use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, which he often used to deliver tonal exaggerations in his solos, particularly with high bends, complex guitar playing, and use of legato. As a record producer, he also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas. He was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic phasing effects for rock recording.[citation needed] He was influenced by blues artists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King and Elmore James,rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield and Steve Cropper, and the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. Hendrix began dressing and wearing a moustache like Little Richard when he performed and recorded in his band from March 1, 1964 through to the spring of 1965. In 1966, he stated, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice".

Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day. Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals. This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs. Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best. The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close. "Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music. -

Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses. There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle. This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour. Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists. The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded. -

After arranging much of the dual guitar work between Clapton and Duane Allman on the Derek & The Dominoes LP and with Dickey Betts and Duane Allman on the early Allman Brothers records, Dowd was a logical choice for the dueling guitars of Wishbone Ash. Although the band never saw the success that any of the Clapton bands or the Allmans did, they built a solid following of guitar-hero worshiping fans. This was their second time at Winterland, where they had previously played in 1973. Wishbone Ash began as a blues-based guitar band and eventually became a progressive rock force. They formed in the late-1960s, with guitarist Andy Powell, bassist Martin Turner, second guitarist Ted Turner, and drummer Steve Upton. They were quickly scooped up by rock manager Miles Copeland, years before he would spearhead the careers of Sting, his brother Stuart Copeland, and Andy Summers. Copeland got them an opening slot with Deep Purple, and one day when guitarist Andy Powell was jamming with Purple's Ritchie Blackmore at a sound check, they were offered a record deal with Decca Records in the U.K. The group released four studio albums in four years, growing in popularity with each record. They were faves of the British press, and in many ways offered as a sort of U.K counterpart to what the Allman Brothers Band were doing with dual guitars in the United States. After the release of Wishbone Four in 1974, Ted Turner left the band and was replaced by Laurie Wisefield, who remained with Wishbone Ash through the late- 1980s. Bassist and founder Martin Turner would also leave for a time and was replaced by former King Crimson and future Asia bassist John Wetton. This show featured the Powell/Martin Turner/Wisefield/Upton lineup, and is unique for also featuring a keyboard player in the mix. The set was performed in a year where they released two different studio albums on two different labels (MCA and Atlantic); although the band thought a move to Atlantic would help them dominate the charts in the U.S., after one disappointing album the band returned to their deal with MCA. Hard core fans of the band will love this performance. Wishbone Ash has essentially remained a cult favorite, never really achieving widespread commercial success. The original lineup did reunite for one LP and tour in 1992, and today Powell lives in Connecticut and Turner remains in the U.K. There have been two different versions of Wishbone Ash touring since the mid-1990s, with both musicians fighting over the right to the name. -

Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the time of this show, the self-titled debut in '76 and the 1978 follow-up You're Gonna Get It! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick things off with "Surrender" before launching into "Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll" and proceed to play an hour and a half of early hits, carving out their signature sound of rollicking heartland rock to the Winterland audience. "Casadega" is a pretty, lesser-known ode about a town in Florida, and then Petty gets into the rest of his set with many of the favorites that have made him a household name: "I Need to Know," "Refugee," "Listen To Her Heart," "American Girl," and "Breakdown," all renditions of classic songs that don't, at this early stage of their career, bear the stamp of time that today weathers many Petty compositions. Petty chats with the audience, telling a funny story about a card game the night before introducing "another new song, Refugee." Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida and embraces an all-American sensibility in his songwriting, which recalls that of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Bruce Springsteen. Much of his compositions have a raucous vibe but are rooted in strong characters and stories of the downtrodden heroes of our culture. At 17, Petty left school to join Mudcrutch, who then relocated to LA just before breaking up. Petty remained active with some other musical ensembles before honing his songwriting skills with the Heartbreakers, and in 1976 the band released their self-titled debut, which was first a hit in England before American audiences caught on. A few years later, they released their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes which spent seven weeks at number two on the US charts. And the rest, as they say, is history, and today Petty is one of rock's most respected, enduring, and best loved performers. -

Recorded three days after Christmas in 1978 at Winterland in San Francisco, it features the seminal punk band in what many feel was its strongest musical period. The band line-up featured here included vocalist Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Doug Colvin), and drummer Marky Ramone (Marc Bell), who had recently replaced original drummer Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi). Tommy Ramone, a driving force behind the initial band, decided he enjoyed working in the studio more than touring and was now engineering and producing the band's albums. For this show, all the classics are here, and the band was pumped up, to say the least. The Ramones had just come off the release of their successful late 1977 release, Road To Ruin and were about to see the premiere of Rock N Roll High School, a Roger Corman-produced feature film starring the band. Also during the time of this recording, the band was in the studio with legendary producer, Phil Spector, working on the album that would become End Of The Century. This recording opens with a fade-in to "Rockaway Beach," which, though incomplete, sets the mood for the entire show. That song is followed by a non-stop barrage of sonic attacks that includes "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Don't Want You," "Go Mental," "Rock N Roll High School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You," and several others. In true Ramones' style, few of these songs exceed two minutes and 30 seconds, and several clock in at about 90 seconds. Each song shines in its own distinct way, thanks largely to the vocal delivery of Joey Ramone. They also offer some interesting covers, including a remake of the Searchers 1965 hit, "Needles and Pins" (co-written by a pre-Sonny & Cher songwriter, Sonny Bono, and producer Jack Nitzsche), a high-octane re-working of the 1963 Trashmen hit, "Surfin' Bird," and the early '60s pop classic, "Do Ya Wanna Dance." Ending the show with "We're A Happy Family," the band never lets up the energy throughout the entire performance. Although the Stooges, The MC5, and The New York Dolls cut the pathway that most punk bands would follow, The Ramones were arguably the most important American punk band because of their widespread popularity and long-standing musical legacy. Formed in 1974, the band released their debut LP in 1976 and remained active until they completed the 1996 Lollapolooza Festival Tour. They energized the Manhattan club scene with a raw intensity that in 1974 and '75, helped put New York havens such as CBGBs and Max's Kansas City at the forefront of a brave new musical scene. The band continued through into the early 1980s as punk's premier band, but their popularity dwindled as the techno movement took hold and MTV took over the music industry. They would remain together with Joey and Johnny Ramone and other members coming and going through 1996, despite the fact that Joe and John had longstanding differences and hardly spoke to each other during the last four years the band was together. Sadly, within three years, between 2001 and 2004, Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee Ramone would all be dead. Joey and Johnny died of cancer and Dee Dee died of a heroin overdose. Today, the Ramones are considered the quintessential American punk band.

This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music.

It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Discovered in the archives of the late promoter Bill Graham, this excellent live recording of Wishbone Ash was made in April 1976 as the band was promoting Locked In, an album they had made with producer Tom Dowd, best known for his work with Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, and the Allman Brothers.
After arranging much of the dual guitar work between Clapton and Duane Allman on the Derek & The Dominoes LP and with Dickey Betts and Duane Allman on the early Allman Brothers records, Dowd was a logical choice for the dueling guitars of Wishbone Ash. Although the band never saw the success that any of the Clapton bands or the Allmans did, they built a solid following of guitar-hero worshiping fans. This was their second time at Winterland, where they had previously played in 1973.
Wishbone Ash began as a blues-based guitar band and eventually became a progressive rock force. They formed in the late-1960s, with guitarist Andy Powell, bassist Martin Turner, second guitarist Ted Turner, and drummer Steve Upton. They were quickly scooped up by rock manager Miles Copeland, years before he would spearhead the careers of Sting, his brother Stuart Copeland, and Andy Summers. Copeland got them an opening slot with Deep Purple, and one day when guitarist Andy Powell was jamming with Purple's Ritchie Blackmore at a sound check, they were offered a record deal with Decca Records in the U.K.
The group released four studio albums in four years, growing in popularity with each record. They were faves of the British press, and in many ways offered as a sort of U.K counterpart to what the Allman Brothers Band were doing with dual guitars in the United States. After the release of Wishbone Four in 1974, Ted Turner left the band and was replaced by Laurie Wisefield, who remained with Wishbone Ash through the late- 1980s. Bassist and founder Martin Turner would also leave for a time and was replaced by former King Crimson and future Asia bassist John Wetton.
This show featured the Powell/Martin Turner/Wisefield/Upton lineup, and is unique for also featuring a keyboard player in the mix. The set was performed in a year where they released two different studio albums on two different labels (MCA and Atlantic); although the band thought a move to Atlantic would help them dominate the charts in the U.S., after one disappointing album the band returned to their deal with MCA.
Hard core fans of the band will love this performance. Wishbone Ash has essentially remained a cult favorite, never really achieving widespread commercial success. The original lineup did reunite for one LP and tour in 1992, and today Powell lives in Connecticut and Turner remains in the U.K. There have been two different versions of Wishbone Ash touring since the mid-1990s, with both musicians fighting over the right to the name.

After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year's Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the time of this show, the self-titled debut in '76 and the 1978 follow-up You're Gonna Get It!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick things off with "Surrender" before launching into "Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll" and proceed to play an hour and a half of early hits, carving out their signature sound of rollicking heartland rock to the Winterland audience. "Casadega" is a pretty, lesser-known ode about a town in Florida, and then Petty gets into the rest of his set with many of the favorites that have made him a household name: "I Need to Know," "Refugee," "Listen To Her Heart," "American Girl," and "Breakdown," all renditions of classic songs that don't, at this early stage of their career, bear the stamp of time that today weathers many Petty compositions. Petty chats with the audience, telling a funny story about a card game the night before introducing "another new song, Refugee."
Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida and embraces an all-American sensibility in his songwriting, which recalls that of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Bruce Springsteen. Much of his compositions have a raucous vibe but are rooted in strong characters and stories of the downtrodden heroes of our culture. At 17, Petty left school to join Mudcrutch, who then relocated to LA just before breaking up. Petty remained active with some other musical ensembles before honing his songwriting skills with the Heartbreakers, and in 1976 the band released their self-titled debut, which was first a hit in England before American audiences caught on. A few years later, they released their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes which spent seven weeks at number two on the US charts. And the rest, as they say, is history, and today Petty is one of rock's most respected, enduring, and best loved performers.

Summary:
This powerful and rare recording of the Ramones was culled from the private archives of the late Bill Graham. Recorded three days after Christmas in 1978 at Winterland in San Francisco, it features the seminal punk band in what many feel was its strongest musical period. The band line-up featured here included vocalist Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Doug Colvin), and drummer Marky Ramone (Marc Bell), who had recently replaced original drummer Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi). Tommy Ramone, a driving force behind the initial band, decided he enjoyed working in the studio more than touring and was now engineering and producing the band's albums.
For this show, all the classics are here, and the band was pumped up, to say the least. The Ramones had just come off the release of their successful late 1977 release, Road To Ruin and were about to see the premiere of Rock N Roll High School, a Roger Corman-produced feature film starring the band. Also during the time of this recording, the band was in the studio with legendary producer, Phil Spector, working on the album that would become End Of The Century.
This recording opens with a fade-in to "Rockaway Beach," which, though incomplete, sets the mood for the entire show. That song is followed by a non-stop barrage of sonic attacks that includes "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Don't Want You," "Go Mental," "Rock N Roll High School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You," and several others.
In true Ramones' style, few of these songs exceed two minutes and 30 seconds, and several clock in at about 90 seconds. Each song shines in its own distinct way, thanks largely to the vocal delivery of Joey Ramone. They also offer some interesting covers, including a remake of the Searchers 1965 hit, "Needles and Pins" (co-written by a pre-Sonny & Cher songwriter, Sonny Bono, and producer Jack Nitzsche), a high-octane re-working of the 1963 Trashmen hit, "Surfin' Bird," and the early '60s pop classic, "Do Ya Wanna Dance." Ending the show with "We're A Happy Family," the band never lets up the energy throughout the entire performance.
Although the Stooges, The MC5, and The New York Dolls cut the pathway that most punk bands would follow, The Ramones were arguably the most important American punk band because of their widespread popularity and long-standing musical legacy. Formed in 1974, the band released their debut LP in 1976 and remained active until they completed the 1996 Lollapolooza Festival Tour. They energized the Manhattan club scene with a raw intensity that in 1974 and '75, helped put New York havens such as CBGBs and Max's Kansas City at the forefront of a brave new musical scene. The band continued through into the early 1980s as punk's premier band, but their popularity dwindled as the techno movement took hold and MTV took over the music industry.
They would remain together with Joey and Johnny Ramone and other members coming and going through 1996, despite the fact that Joe and John had longstanding differences and hardly spoke to each other during the last four years the band was together. Sadly, within three years, between 2001 and 2004, Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee Ramone would all be dead. Joey and Johnny died of cancer and Dee Dee died of a heroin overdose.
Today, the Ramones are considered the quintessential American punk band.

Summary:
This powerful and rare recording of the Ramones was culled from the private archives of the late Bill Graham. Recorded three days after Christmas in 1978 at Winterland in San Francisco, it features the seminal punk band in what many feel was its strongest musical period. The band line-up featured here included vocalist Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Doug Colvin), and drummer Marky Ramone (Marc Bell), who had recently replaced original drummer Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi). Tommy Ramone, a driving force behind the initial band, decided he enjoyed working in the studio more than touring and was now engineering and producing the band's albums.
For this show, all the classics are here, and the band was pumped up, to say the least. The Ramones had just come off the release of their successful late 1977 release, Road To Ruin and were about to see the premiere of Rock N Roll High School, a Roger Corman-produced feature film starring the band. Also during the time of this recording, the band was in the studio with legendary producer, Phil Spector, working on the album that would become End Of The Century.
This recording opens with a fade-in to "Rockaway Beach," which, though incomplete, sets the mood for the entire show. That song is followed by a non-stop barrage of sonic attacks that includes "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Don't Want You," "Go Mental," "Rock N Roll High School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You," and several others.
In true Ramones' style, few of these songs exceed two minutes and 30 seconds, and several clock in at about 90 seconds. Each song shines in its own distinct way, thanks largely to the vocal delivery of Joey Ramone. They also offer some interesting covers, including a remake of the Searchers 1965 hit, "Needles and Pins" (co-written by a pre-Sonny & Cher songwriter, Sonny Bono, and producer Jack Nitzsche), a high-octane re-working of the 1963 Trashmen hit, "Surfin' Bird," and the early '60s pop classic, "Do Ya Wanna Dance." Ending the show with "We're A Happy Family," the band never lets up the energy throughout the entire performance.
Although the Stooges, The MC5, and The New York Dolls cut the pathway that most punk bands would follow, The Ramones were arguably the most important American punk band because of their widespread popularity and long-standing musical legacy. Formed in 1974, the band released their debut LP in 1976 and remained active until they completed the 1996 Lollapolooza Festival Tour. They energized the Manhattan club scene with a raw intensity that in 1974 and '75, helped put New York havens such as CBGBs and Max's Kansas City at the forefront of a brave new musical scene. The band continued through into the early 1980s as punk's premier band, but their popularity dwindled as the techno movement took hold and MTV took over the music industry.
They would remain together with Joey and Johnny Ramone and other members coming and going through 1996, despite the fact that Joe and John had longstanding differences and hardly spoke to each other during the last four years the band was together. Sadly, within three years, between 2001 and 2004, Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee Ramone would all be dead. Joey and Johnny died of cancer and Dee Dee died of a heroin overdose.
Today, the Ramones are considered the quintessential American punk band.

Just compare Styx's "Suite Madame Blue" with Led Zeppelin's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" and it will become clear to any doubters why Styx was able to find a very happy home at AOR radio stations between 1971 and the late-1980s. This show, taken from the Bill Graham archives, shows them near their commercial peak after the release of the initial A&M; releases Equinox, Crystal Ball, and The Grand Illusion.
The group emerged from a popular Chicago club act, the Tradewinds, that featured brothers John and Chuck Panozzo (on bass and drums) and vocalist/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung. Eventually the Tradewinds broke up, and the Panozzos and DeYoung formed Styx with guitarists JY Young and John Curulewski.
The group signed with an RCA label offshoot, Wooden Nickel Records, and became a regional sensation, fueled by the rock ballad, "Lady." After four albums with that label, they moved to A&M.; John Curulewski left after the first release, Equinox, and was replaced by the excellent vocalist and guitarist, Tommy Shaw.
With the power of the A&M; publicity and radio staff behind them, and with a roster of commercially appealing songs such as "The Grand Illusion," "Lorelei," "Fooling Yourself (Palm Of Your Hands)," "Suite Madame Blue," "Crystal Ball," "Light Up," and "Come Sail Away" (all featured here at this Winterland show), Styx soon became one of the most popular FM rock bands in America. Eventually the members of the band began to fight amongst themselves, led by Shaw (who felt the band needed to be positioned in a more hard rock vein) and DeYoung (who envisioned a more theatrical and Broadway-driven format.)
After this tour, their albums, arguably, became more and more contrived. Eventually Styx split in 1984. Shaw formed Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent, and DeYoung launched a solo career that was only moderately successful at best. The band reunited in the 1990s, but without John Panozzo, who had died from alcohol related issues. The reunion was a surprise success but eventually the rift between Shaw and DeYoung resurfaced. When DeYoung took a leave to recuperate from an eye ailment, the band regrouped with a new singer. DeYoung tried to sue, and in 2001 the two parties settled.
Shaw and Young now front a newer version of Styx (Chuck Panozzo left after contracting AIDS). De Young, after getting his Broadway fix out with a failed album of classics from the Great White Way, tours as "the former vocalist of Styx."

Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989.
Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.
A 20-minute version of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" is followed by a 12- minute but incomplete "I'm Going Home." After a souped-up version of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," Lee and the band close with two of their own hits: "Choo Choo Mama" and "Baby, Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You."
One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both the Fillmore East and West, and of course, Winterland.
By the time this show was recorded. TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues, and jazz. In 1972, the band would leave Decca Records (the label that signed them in 1967), and move to Columbia's corporate home. Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989.
Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.
A 20-minute version of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" is followed by a 12- minute but incomplete "I'm Going Home." After a souped-up version of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," Lee and the band close with two of their own hits: "Choo Choo Mama" and "Baby, Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You."
One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both the Fillmore East and West, and of course, Winterland.
By the time this show was recorded. TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues, and jazz. In 1972, the band would leave Decca Records (the label that signed them in 1967), and move to Columbia's corporate home. The group was riding high on the multi-platinum Red Octopus album and was arguably at a new peak of popularity.
This set is not only represented by material from the early Jefferson Starship albums and a couple of Jefferson Airplane classics, but interestingly features live performances of material from Grace Slick's first solo album plus two of the best tracks Marty Balin recorded with his post-Jefferson Airplane project, Bodacious D F.
The recording begins in progress, with the group wrapping up Vic Smith's "Drivin' Me Crazy," the most infectious track from the obscure Bodacious D F album. This sweeping, heart-breaking song about longing for lost love serves as a perfect vehicle for Balin's romantically emotive vocals. An extended version of the Jerry Gallup/Craig Chaquico composition, "That's For Sure" follows, clocking in at nearly twice the length of the studio recording featured on the 1974 Jefferson Starship album, Dragonfly. With barrelhouse piano support from Sears, Grace Slick next takes over with a very bawdy take on "Better Lying Down," a track from her first solo album, Manhole.
In a rare instance of drummer Johnny Barbata fronting the band, they next deliver "Big City," the song he co-wrote with ex-Canned Heat guitarist Joel Scott Hill and original Flying Burrito Brothers bassist Chris Etheridge. Here Barbata handles lead vocals on a song soon to be recorded for the group's next album, Spitfire. Returning to Dragonfly material, David Frieberg next fronts the band on "Come To Life," a song containing words by the Grateful Dead's lyricist extraordinaire, Robert Hunter.
A second taste of the rare Bodacious D F material is next with "The Witcher." Beginning introspectively, this becomes an explosive R&B; workout featuring Balin's lustfully unhinged vocals. Dipping back even further, the group next tackles one of Kantner's early sci-fi classics, "Have You Seen The Saucers." Sandwiched in the middle of this Jefferson Airplane number is an extended and pummeling bass solo courtesy of Pete Sears. This leads up to a raucous take of "White Rabbit," one of Grace Slick's signature songs. The recording concludes with the first taste of Red Octopus material. Craig Chaquico's "Sweeter Than Honey" clearly shows the band heading in a straightforward rock direction, which would capture the attention of a new legion of fans, while alienating older fans that preferred more thought provoking lyrics and the more experimental sound of the Airplane. This leads into a drum solo by Johnny Barbata, prior to the tape stock running out.
With all three Airplane vocalists again on board and a wealth of diverse material in the group's touring repertoire, the Jefferson Starship was arguably nearing its peak around this time. With personnel as well as musical changes again in store as the 1970s wore on, the group would rarely be this engaging again and this recording, although not without it's flaws, represents the Jefferson Starship nearing the end of their golden era.

Es verfügt über fast 100 Räume, wovon die Eingangshalle, der Ballsaal und der Wintergarten zu den Beeindruckendsten zählen. Die Innenausstattung ist aus den edelsten und teuersten seinerzeit verfügbaren Materialien. Das Schloss ist mittels eines 244 m langen unterirdischen Gang mit den Stallungen verbunden. Die Türme gewähren einen prächtigen Rundblick über die Stadt. Ein Schloss nach dem Geschmack von König Ludwig II von Bayern.
Lady Mary Pellatt gründete die erste Pfadfindergruppe für Mädchen in Kanada. Als erste Vorsitzende lud sie Gruppen mit bis zu 250 Mädchen regelmäßig in ihr Haus ein.
Wegen finanziellen Schwierigkeiten musste Sir Henry Pellatt Casa Loma 1923 verkaufen.
1933 fiel es der Stadt zu und wurde als Museum der breiten Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung gestellt.

Lady Mary Pellatt founded the first Girl Guides in Canada. As the Chief Commissioner of the Dominion of Canada Girl Guides, she invited regularly groups with up to 250 girls into her home.
