Mount Aso (阿蘇山Aso-san) is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Aso Kujū National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyūshū. Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Aso has one of the largest calderas in the world (25 km north-south and 18 km east-west). IL2 The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning")
il2 with dark blue world+mods, www.sas1946.com The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning") fighter was a World War II Japanese propeller-driven aircraft prototype that was built in a canard design. The wings were attached to the tail section and stabilizers were on the front. The propeller was also in the rear, in a pusher configuration. Developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a short-range, land-based interceptor, the J7W was a response to B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese home islands. For interception missions, the J7W was to be armed with four forward-firing 30 mm cannons in the nose.

Plans were also drawn up for a jet-powered version (J7W2 Shinden-Kai), but this never left the drawing board.

The J designation was used by land based fighters of the Imperial Japanese Navy and W is for Watanabe factory produced (later Kyūshū). The J7W was developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy as a specific response to the B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese homeland. For this type of mission, the J7W was armed with 4 forward-firing 30mm cannons in the nose. It was to be operated from land bases. The canard concept was tested first by building a number of gliders with this layout, designated MXY6. The first prototype, the only one to have flown, is currently in storage at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC General characteristics: Crew: one, pilot Length: 9.66 m (31 ft 8 in) Wingspan: 11.11 m (36 ft 5 in) Height: 3.92 m (12 ft 10 in) Wing area: 20.5 m² (220 ft²) Empty weight: 3645 kg (8019 lb) Loaded weight: 4928 kg (10841 lb) Max takeoff weight: 5288 kg (11663 lb) Powerplant: 1× Mitsubishi Ha-43 12, 1589 kW (2130 hp) Performance: Maximum speed ...

Amazing Video Sakurajima Eruptions Caught on Surveillance w/ Lightning (Kyūshū, Japan)
(December 22nd and 23rd, 2011) Spectacular images as 4 surveillance videos capture eruptions in Japans Mount Sakurajima with amazing lightning strikes. Information on this volcano below. Sakurajima (桜島?), also romanized as Sakurashima or Sakura-jima,[1] is an active composite volcano (stratovolcano) and a former island (now connected to the mainland) of the same name in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyūshū, Japan. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption caused the former island to be connected with the Osumi Peninsula.[2] The volcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earlier eruptions built the white sands highlands in the region. Sakurajima is a composite mountain. Its summit is split into three peaks, Kitadake (northern peak), Nakadake (central peak) and Minamidake (southern peak) which is active now. Today's north Peak (北岳Kitadake?) is Sakurajima's highest, rising to 1117 metres (3665 ft) above sea level. The mountain is located in a part of Kagoshima Bay known as Kinkō Bay (錦江湾Kinkōwan?). The former island is part of the city of Kagoshima. The surface of this volcanic peninsula is about 77 square kilometres (30 sq mi).

Kyushu island - Japan
Kyūshū (九州, Nine Provinces?)[2] or Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. Its alternate ancient names include Kyūkoku (九国Nine States), Chinzei (鎮西West of the Pacified Area), and Tsukushi-no-shima (筑紫島Island of Tsukushi). The historical regional name Saikaidō (西海道West Sea Circuit) referred to Kyūshū and its surrounding islands. Kyūshū has a population of 13231995 (2006) and covers 35640 square kilometres (13760 sq miGeography The island is mountainous, and Japan's most active volcano, Mt Aso at 1591 metres (5220 ft), is on Kyūshū. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. The most famous of these are in Beppu, on the east shore, and around Mt. Aso, in central Kyūshū. The name Kyūshū comes from the nine ancient provinces of Saikaidō situated on the island: Chikuzen, Chikugo, Hizen, Higo, Buzen, Bungo, Hyūga, Osumi, and Satsuma. Today's Kyūshū Region (九州地方kyūshū-chihō) is a politically defined region that consists of the seven prefectures on the island of Kyūshū and also Okinawa Prefecture to the south: * Northern Kyushu o Fukuoka Prefecture o Saga Prefecture o Kumamoto Prefecture o Nagasaki Prefecture o Ōita Prefecture * Kagoshima Prefecture * Miyazaki Prefecture * Okinawa Prefecture The world's 37th largest island by area, Kyūshū is smaller than Spitsbergen but larger than New Britain and Taiwan. By population, it ranks 13th, having fewer inhabitants than ...

Bullet Train, Kyushu, Japan (Kyūshū Shinkansen - 九州新幹線)
Approaching Shin-Yatsushiro station on the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) on the Japanese Island of Kyūshū. I had left Kagoshima, on my way to Hakata, approximately 40 minutes earlier. Since the Yatsushiro-Hakata section of the line was still under construction I had to transfer to a slow train service to complete the journey. At Yatsushiro we were offered a convenient same-platform change to the slower train - which comes into view at the end of this video.
