Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement. When he was twenty-four, Smith published the Book of Mormon; by the time of his death fourteen years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers and founded a religion and religious culture that continues to the present.
Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont, but by 1817, he had moved with his family to the burned-over district of western New York, a site of intense religious revivalism during the Second Great Awakening. According to Smith, he experienced a series of visions, including one in which he saw "two personages" (presumably God the Father and Jesus Christ) and others in which an angel named Moroni directed him to a buried book of golden plates inscribed with a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civilization. In 1830, Smith published what he said was an English translation of these plates, the Book of Mormon. The same year he organized the Church of Christ, calling it a restoration of the early Christian church. Members of the church were later called "Latter Day Saints", or "Mormons".
In 1831, Smith and his followers moved west, planning to build a communalistic American Zion. They first gathered in Kirtland, Ohio and established an outpost in Independence, Missouri which was intended to be Zion's "center place". During the 1830s, Smith sent out missionaries, published revelations, and supervised construction of the expensive Kirtland Temple. Nevertheless, the collapse of the church-sponsored Kirtland Safety Society and violent skirmishes with non-Mormon Missourians caused Smith and his followers to establish a new settlement at Nauvoo, Illinois, where he became a spiritual and political leader. In 1844, Smith and the Nauvoo city council angered non-Mormons by destroying a newspaper that had criticized Smith's power and practice of polygamy.[4] After Smith was imprisoned in Carthage, Illinois, he was killed when a mob stormed the jailhouse.
Smith published many revelations and other texts that his followers regard as scripture. His teachings include unique views about the nature of God, cosmology, family structures, political organization, and religious collectivism. His followers regard him as a prophet comparable to Moses and Elijah, and he is considered the founder of several religious denominations, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ.
Joseph Smith, Jr. was born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont, to Lucy Mack Smith and her husband Joseph, a merchant and farmer.[5] After suffering a crippling bone infection when he was seven, the younger Smith hobbled around on crutches for three years.[6] In 1816–17, after an ill-fated business venture and three years of crop failures, the Smith family moved to the western New York village of Palmyra, and eventually took a mortgage on a 100-acre (40 ha) farm in the nearby town of Manchester.
During the Second Great Awakening, the region was a hotbed of religious enthusiasm; and between 1817 and 1825, there were several camp meetings and revivals in the Palmyra area.[7] Although Smith's parents disagreed about religion, the family was caught up in this excitement.[8] Smith later said he became interested in religion at about the age of twelve; without doubt, he participated in church classes and read the Bible. As a teenager, he may have been sympathetic to Methodism.[9] With other family members, Smith also engaged in religious folk magic, not an uncommon practice at the time.[10] Both his parents and his maternal grandfather reportedly had visions or dreams that they believed communicated messages from God.[11] Smith said that although he had become concerned about the welfare of his soul, he was confused by the claims of competing religious denominations.[12]
Years later Smith said that in 1820 he had received a vision that resolved his religious confusion.[13] While praying in a wooded area near his home, he said that God, in a vision, had told him his sins were forgiven and that all contemporary churches had "turned aside from the gospel."[14] Smith said he told the experience to a preacher, who dismissed the story with contempt; but the experience was largely unknown, even to most Mormons, until the 1840s.[15] Although Smith may have understood the event as a personal conversion, this "First Vision" later grew in importance among Mormons, who today see it as the founding event of Mormonism.

Emma Smith is still struggling with the loss of her husband, the murdered Mormon prophet Joseph Smith; while trying to hold together her maturing family. While there, David begins asking the hard questions about his father's history. What he discovers causes him to re-evaluate his entire world view. It depicts her spiritual journey and conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ as she reads the Book of Mormon, finds her faith in God, despite family difficulties, and ultimately is forced to leave her home to head to the unknown Salt Lake Valley. Even on her journey on a wagon train into the wilderness, as her husband is commissioned to leave with the Mormon Battalion to fight in the Mexican war, she remains full of faith in God. Her husband does return to her unharmed and the movie ends with a flash forward to the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple.

Jack Monnett goes through Ether Chapter 8, of the Book of Mormon, to lay out the foundation of the Secret Combinations, also described in his book: Awakening to Our Awful Situation. Jack reminds us that the Book of Mormon tells us of the Secret Combination and how it infiltrated government at the highest levels, just as today.
Ether 8: 24-26 Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.
Jack Monnett spoke of Christopher Bolyn, non-LDS, who read about the Secret Combinations in the Book of Mormon. He wrote to Professor Steve Jones: "The LDS Church has an advantage over other Christian Churches... it has the warnings of the Secret Combinations and the Gadianton Robbers taking over the government... in my mind that makes the LDS Church the most relevant Christian church on the planet. It requires its followers to do something about our awful situation brought on by the gadianton robbers. Most non-mormons don't have a clue about these terms in the Book of Mormon, such as in Ether 8:16..."
Jack Monnett illustrates how the Secret Combination (Secret Societies / Conspiracy) have accomplished most of what they set out to do. He talks about the Illuminati, their history, and other histories of the conspiracy led by Lucifer himself.
Jack Monnett counsels that we should educate ourselves and awaken to our awful situation and commanded by the Lord in Ether 8, written by Moroni. Once we are educated and awake we can help to educate and wake up others. Dr. Monnett answers questions from the audience. Talks about the Rothschild family.
One person asks, "now that we know all of this what do we do"... Dr. Monnett suggests that would should each take that question to the Lord and pray to find out what He would have us do. It was also suggested that each of us have our own talents, knowledge, abilities, etc. and we can each be effective in different ways, there is no one correct answer. The answer may be different for each of us as the Lord so inspires.

The Mormon History Association presents:
An American Journey Across the Landscape of Mormon Theology
The history of the Mormon faith is a uniquely American journey originating in the shady woodlands of upstate New York in the 19th century, moving across the plains, opening new frontiers and finally setting its roots to flourish in the stark desert landscapes of the mountainous West. American sculptor and Utahan, Cyrus E. Dallin, whose Native American subjects are featured at The Rockwell Museum, was commissioned by the Mormon Church to sculpt the original Angel Moroni for the spire of the Salt Lake Temple in Utah. His statue became an enduring symbol of the Mormon faith and today remains the model for the sculpted angels now topping more than 140 temples throughout the world.
About the Speaker
Terryl L. Givens did graduate work in intellectual history at Cornell and in comparative literature at UNC Chapel Hill, where he received his Ph.D. He holds the James A. Bostwick Chair of English and is Professor of Literature and Religion at the University of Richmond, where he teaches courses in nineteenth-century studies and the Bible’s influence on Western literature. His writing has been praised by the New York Times as “provocative reading,” and his numerous books include When Souls Had Wings, a history of the idea of premortal life in Western thought (Oxford 2010), By the Hand of Mormon: The American Scripture that Launched a World Religion (Oxford 2002), and, with Fiona Givens, The God Who Weeps: How Mormonism Makes Sense of Life (Shadow Mountain, 2012). His most recent book is Wrestling the Angel: The Foundations of Mormon Thought (Oxford 2014). He lives in Montpelier, Virginia.

We will also take time to visit the cemetery in Kirtland, reviewing the lives of some of the saints who are buried there. We'll overnight near Kirtland. (B)
Day 5 -- NEWEL WHITNEY STORE- ISAAC MORLEY FARM - JOHN JOHNSON FARM
Today we will visit the Isaac Morley farm before we tour the LDS Visitor Center where guides will take you to the Sawmill, the Johnson Historic Hotel, and the Newel K. Whitney store, where you will have the opportunity to sit in the actual room where the School of the Prophets took place. Then, we will continue our way south to the John Johnson Farm, where Joseph Smith was dragged from his bed and savagely tarred and feathered. In the evening, we will enjoy a lovely dinner with the Amish in Charm, Ohio. We will stay the night at an Amish Bed & Breakfast. (B)
Day 6 -- SPRINGFIELD
We will spend some time on our motor coach this day as we travel across Ohio and Indiana into Illinois. We'll stay the night in Springfield, Illinois and have dinner in Abraham Lincoln's hometown. (B)
Day 7 -- CARTHAGE JAIL -- NAUVOO
We drive this morning to Carthage, Illinois. We'll visit the Visitors Center and jail where the life of Joseph and his faithful brother Hyrum were taken by assassins. We will then continue on our way to Joseph's City, Nauvoo. In Nauvoo we'll visit the LDS Visitor's Center, take a horse drawn wagon tour through the streets of Nauvoo, experience the Nauvoo Fair and see the Nauvoo Pageant before spending the night at the Nauvoo Inn. (B)
Day 8 -- NAUVOO
We'll begin our day with a special Temple session for our group. After lunch we'll go back in time to 'Old Nauvoo' and see the Browning gun shop, bakery and Family Living Center where all the old crafts are demonstrated. After dinner we'll visit the cemetery, the Red Brick Store and Joseph Smith's grave. We'll also see the granite quarry where the stones for the temple were taken and walk the Trail of Hope as we appreciate the majestic Temple, high on a bluff, symbolically facing the west. We will stay the night again at the Nauvoo Inn. (B)
Day 9 -- JAMESPORT -- ADAM-ONDI-AHMAN - FAR WEST
Today will begin with a drive to Adam-ondi-Ahman, stopping in Hannibal, the home town of Mark Twain. After lunch we'll explore the ancient past and the foretold future, where they come together in this lush valley. Next we'll pass by the tragic site of Haun's Mill, where a terrible massacre took place October 30th, 1838. You'll then travel on to Far West to view the temple cornerstone and learn the significance of the Lord's Promised Land. Our final stop will be Liberty Jail. Here we will share in the despair and the exhilaration of the Prophet Joseph as he received some of our most hallowed revelations while he was incarcerated there. Our day ends with a farewell dinner in Liberty where we stay the night. (B,D)
Day 10 - INDEPENDENCE -- REMNANT CHURCH - TEMPLE LOT -- LIBERTY JAIL
Our last day will be spent in Independence, Missouri, the place prophesied as the location of the New Jerusalem in the final days of this earth. You will stand on the ground where these events will occur. We will visit the Remnant RLDS church headquarters as well as the Community of Christ temple and conference center, and the empty lot, where one day a magnificent Temple will be built by the remnant of the House of Israel. Finally, we will tour the LDS Church Visitor's Center in Independence before our motor coach conveys us to the airport.
