Abolitionism is the bioethical school and movement that endorses the use of biotechnology to maximize happiness and eliminate suffering. “Abolition” is used for the name of this movement, in the context of “the abolition of suffering". Abolitionists propose to use technologies like psychopharmaceuticals and genetic engineering to eliminate even the possibility of painful sensations and emotions.

The Abolitionist Society is a non-profit foundation and forum, founded in 2002, dedicated to the advancement of this philosophy.

In this context, Abolitionism (in the context of abolishing many forms of suffering, not to be confused with the anti-slavery movement that sought to abolish slavery of the same name) is inspired by Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarian ethic, principally by the tenets of negative utilitarianism. Some Abolitionists consider the elimination of genetic discrimination to be a vital component of Abolitionism in the larger sense, and intend to eliminate suffering in all sentient species, considering it a cruel side effect of natural selection. Most abolitionists would be classified as negative utilitarian, believing that suffering of any kind, no matter how small, should be prevented. Philosopher David Pearce’s abolitionist manifesto, “The Hedonistic Imperative”, serves as both an inspiration for the group’s theories and as a demonstration of how the world can convert Abolitionist philosophy into reality.

Bruce Friedrich (born August 7, 1969) is Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at Farm Sanctuary.

Friedrich serves on the governing board of the Catholic Vegetarian Society, the advisory board of the Christian Vegetarian Association, and is a founding member of the Society of Ethical and Religious Vegetarians. He has appeared on NBC's Today Show, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and Court TV.

He served as president of the Cleveland County Young Democrats during his last two years of high school and campaigned for the late Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) during his first year of college.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Iowa's Grinnell College with majors in English and economics and a minor in religious studies. Before joining People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in 1996, he spent six years working in a shelter for homeless families and a soup kitchen in Washington, D.C.

He is vegan and lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, Dr. Alka Chandna. For two years, Friedrich was a teacher at the Baltimore Freedom Academy.

Peter Albert David Singer (born 6 July 1946) is an Australian philosopher who is the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University and Laureate Professor at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne. He specialises in applied ethics and approaches ethical issues from a secular, preference utilitarian perspective.

He has served, on two occasions, as chair of philosophy at Monash University, where he founded its Centre for Human Bioethics. In 1996, he unsuccessfully stood as a Greens candidate for the Australian Senate. In 2004, he was recognised as the Australian Humanist of the Year by the Council of Australian Humanist Societies. He has been voted one of Australia's ten most influential public intellectuals. Singer serves on the Advisory Board of Incentives for Global Health, the NGO formed to develop the Health Impact Fund proposal.

Outside academic circles, Singer is best known for his book Animal Liberation, widely regarded as the touchstone of the animal liberation movement. Not all members of the animal liberation movement share this view, and Singer himself has said the media overstates his status. His views on that and other issues in bioethics have attracted attention and a degree of controversy.

The Classic (Hangul: 클래식; Keulraesik) is a 2003 South Korean melodrama / romance film directed by Kwak Jae-yong.

The film tells the parallel love stories of a mother and daughter. The story of the mother is told partially in flashbacks.

The movie starts in the present day. The daughter, Ji-hye (Son Ye-jin), is cleaning-up around her house when she comes across a box full of old letters and a diary that detail the story of her mother, Joo-hee (who is also played by Son Ye-jin). Periodically in the movie, Ji-hye reads one of these letters, which starts a flashback scene in which the story of the mother is told. These flashbacks are intertwined with Ji-hye's own story, in which she falls for a fellow student, Sang-min (Zo In Sung), who is involved with the school theater.

The movie tells the story of both relationships. The mother, Joo-hee, visits the countryside as a student one summer and meets Joon-ha (Jo Seung-woo). Together they explore the countryside, playing near a river which they both will always remember as their special place. When a storm starts they take shelter together under a tree, but not before Joo-hee twists her ankle and is rendered helpless. Joon-ha carries her on his back and they struggle home, only to be confronted by her angry parents. Before they separate, Joo-hee gives him a necklace, which he keeps close as a precious reminder of their time together.

Bernard N. Nathanson (July 31, 1926 – February 21, 2011) was an American medical doctor from New York who helped to found the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, but later became a pro-life activist.

Nathanson was born in New York City. His father was an obstetrician/gynecologist, the same career that Nathanson held in his professional life. Nathanson graduated in 1949 from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal.

Nathanson stated that suicide "[ran] in [his] family": his paternal grandfather committed suicide when Nathanson's father was a child, his sister committed suicide at the age of 49, and his father attempted suicide at least once.

He was licensed to practice in New York state since 1952 and became board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology in 1960. He was for a time the director of the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health (CRASH), then the largest freestanding abortion facility in the world. Nathanson has written that he was responsible for more than 75,000 abortions throughout his career as an abortion provider. CRASH was forced to close in 1988 after the death of a patient during an abortion.^{[citation needed]} Nathanson states that he performed an abortion on a woman whom he had impregnated.
