More than a dozen blasts tore through Shi'ite markets and shopping districts. No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts but Sunni Islamist insurgents and al-Qaeda's Iraqi wing have increased attacks since the start of the year and often target Shi'ite districts. "A driver hit another car and left pretending to bring traffic police. Another car rushed to take him away and right after his car exploded among people who had gathered to see what was happening," said bystander Hassan Kadhim. "People were shouting for help and blood covered their faces." Nearly 400 people have been killed this month as sectarian tensions, fuelled by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, threaten to plunge Iraq back into communal bloodletting. The latest surge in violence began in April after a raid by the Iraqi army on a Sunni Muslim protest camp in the town of Hawija led to clashes with the security forces and more attacks. The US President lays a wreath at the national veterans' cemetery as the nation pays tribute to its fallen soldiers.President Barack Obama has paid his respects at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery as the nation marks Memorial Day. Marines stood at attention along the road as the President rode by motorcade from the White House. He then placed a wreath at the tomb as the US national anthem was played. Speaking afterwards, he said that Americans must honour the sacrifices of their service personnel, particularly at a time when the US combat role in Iraq has ended and the country's involvement in Afghanistan is winding down. He added: "Let us never forget that the nation is still at war." Americans gather at cemeteries, memorials and monuments to honour those fallen in military service on May 27. The public holiday comes as the war in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindle. Before the president travels across the Potomac River from Washington to the national veterans' cemetery, he and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a breakfast at the White House with Gold Star families of service members who have been killed. In one of several ceremonies honouring Americans killed in Afghanistan, the city of South Sioux City, Nebraska, planned to unveil a statue honouring Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John Douangdara, a dog handler for the SEALs killed in a 2011 helicopter crash. His service dog was also killed in the crash and is remembered beside him in the statue. The day is also marked in Moore, the Oklahoma town devastated by a powerful tornado that killed 24 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Another wreath-laying ceremony takes place at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park is a tribute to President Roosevelt's famous speech calling for all people to enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

Colombian soldiers kill veteran FARC brigade commander "El Negro Eliecer" during a military operation close to the Venezuelan border. Full Story: Colombian soldiers have killed a FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) brigade commander during a military operation northeast of the South American country, authorities reported. Ernesto Antonio Hurtado was killed in the Catatumbo region, close to the Venezuelan border during clashes with soldiers on Sunday (May 19). He is suspected of commanding a FARC brigade, running drug trafficking operations in the area, and was a rebel for more than three decades. [General Juan Pablo Amaya, Army Commander]: "In operations carried out by the national army in the Catatumbo region, especially in the Cobre village of Hacari municipality, there were clashes which killed important military terrorists of the mobile Antonio Santos wing of the FARC. We are referring to "El Negro Eliecer", a terrorist with 31 years in the FARC military, and one with the alias "Tatiana", the financial chief with 28 years in the (FARC) military. This is a significant blow as they had significant criminal records." Colombia's battle against the FARC, Latin America's biggest and longest-running guerrilla insurgency, has killed more than 100,000 people, made vast swathes of land too dangerous to farm and forced millions from their homes. The death of the FARC brigade commander comes as the two sides talk peace in Cuba to try to end a five-dead-long-war.
