Mysterious Cities of Gold

In 1532 a Spanish orphan named Esteban joins Mendoza, a navigator, and his associates Sancho and Pedro, in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father. They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl (who was kidnapped by Mendoza), and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub).
The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. The travellers encounter the Maya, Inca, and Olmecs during their journey. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including a solar powered ship (the Solaris) and The Golden Condor, a huge solar-powered ornithopter (mechanical bird), capable of traveling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold.

My favorite animated series of all time is 30 years old! When I realized it I felt the great hit of inspiration and here it is - my ultimate tribute to the Mysterious Cities of Gold! It can be viewed also as a very long trailer because there are no major spoilers :)
I think this series is a bit forgotten now. I can't understand why? Because it's old? Come on, "The Lion King" is almost 20 now, not to mention for example Bambi and they are still one of the most popular fandoms among animated video makers. I don't think it's animation fault as it resembles other old style anime like Ginga Nagareboshi Gin or older Ghibli movies which are well liked. And the story, characters and action are just great! Not to mention how much can you learn about history, geography and mythology of South America - this series taught me more in these subjects than whole school XD
I really recommend you - give this series a chance, watch few first episodes. If you don't like it - just forget about it. But if you DO like it it may become one of your favorite stories of all :) I watched it when I was 7, I watch it now when I'm 22 and I enjoy it even more ;D
I can say that nothing will please me more than to know that this video inspired someone to watch the series and maybe even make their own video tribute. If you do please tell me about it :)

Many people who grew up in the 1980s will remember what is undoubtedly one of the greatest cartoons of all time - "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" ("Taiyō no ko Esuteban" in Japan, and "Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or" in France). The adventures of Esteban, Zia, Tau, Mendoza, Sancho and Pedro, as they journey through sixteenth century South and Central America, are seared into our childhood memories. It is the soundtrack, however, which has burned its way into our souls - hearing just a few notes from any of the songs instantly conjures up hazy, gold-tinged visions of those hot summer afternoons after school, waiting for the moment at five o'clock when you could pull the on-switch on the big old wooden-boxed television, turn the clunky knob onto channel two and drift away with the Cities of Gold theme song as it rang out from the tinny, mono speaker.
All of the songs which made up the soundtrack were awesome. They were each specific to a particular mood and each was repeated throughout the series whenever its mood was required. There was the light-hearted song for comic relief moments, the sad song, the sudden revelation song, the song for sinister places, the song of epicness, the song for battling, the song for showdowns with big bad guys or even bigger wild animals, and many other songs besides. Over them all, however, one tune reigned supreme, reserved for the discovery of mysterious places and the witnessing of grand phenomena - "The Song of Mysterious Awesomeness"! It was played only twelve times throughout all of the whole thirty-nine episodes, and all but one of those times were within the first half of the series. Gathered here, in this video, are the nine best instances of "The Song of Mysterious Awesomeness" arranged in sequence, from its first appearance in Episode 2 during the crossing of the Atlantic, until its final inclusion in Episode 29 as our heroes discover the secret of the Olmecs inside the Mountain of the Burning Shield. It is a life-changing experience.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold
The Mysterious Cities of Gold (太陽の子エステバン, Taiyō no ko Esuteban, "Esteban, Child of the Sun"; French: Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or), is a French-Japanese animated series co-produced by DIC Entertainment and Studio Pierrot. The series premiered in Japan on NHK on 29 June 1982 and ran weekly for 39 episodes until its conclusion on 5 February 1983. Set in 1532, the series follows the adventures of a young Spanish boy named Esteban who joins a voyage to the New World in search of the lost Cities of Gold and his father.
The French version, edited to have different characterization and music, was first aired in Luxembourg on 13 May 1982 by RTL Télévision and in France on 26 September 1983 by Antenne 2, and was subsequently redubbed and distributed in many different countries throughout the world. It is licensed for English language home video release in the United Kingdom, Australia, and North America by Fabulous Films.
In 2007, an animated feature film version of the story was announced by Jean Chalopin's company Movie Plus Group, but plans for the film were later shelved. On Chibi Japan Expo in Paris, Jean Chalopin announced that three new seasons of 26 episodes were planned with a release starting in 2011. The time for the release was later pushed back to 2012, with the two first episodes premiering on the French channel TF1 on 9 December of that year. During the spring of 2013, the new series started airing regularly.

They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl (who was kidnapped by Mendoza), and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub).
The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. The travellers encounter the Maya, Inca, and Olmecs during their journey. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including a solar powered ship (the Solaris) and The Golden Condor, a huge solar-powered ornithopter (mechanical bird), capable of traveling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold.

My favorite animated series of all time is 30 years old! When I realized it I felt the great hit of inspiration and here it is - my ultimate tribute to the Mysterious Cities of Gold! It can be viewed also as a very long trailer because there are no major spoilers :)
I think this series is a bit forgotten now. I can't understand why? Because it's old? Come on, "The Lion King" is almost 20 now, not to mention for example Bambi and they are still one of the most popular fandoms among animated video makers. I don't think it's animation fault as it resembles other old style anime like Ginga Nagareboshi Gin or older Ghibli movies which are well liked. And the story, characters and action are just great! Not to mention how much can you learn about history, geography and mythology of South America - this series taught me more in these subjects than whole school XD
I really recommend you - give this series a chance, watch few first episodes. If you don't like it - just forget about it. But if you DO like it it may become one of your favorite stories of all :) I watched it when I was 7, I watch it now when I'm 22 and I enjoy it even more ;D
I can say that nothing will please me more than to know that this video inspired someone to watch the series and maybe even make their own video tribute. If you do please tell me about it :)

The adventures of Esteban, Zia, Tau, Mendoza, Sancho and Pedro, as they journey through sixteenth century South and Central America, are seared into our childhood memories. All of the songs which made up the soundtrack were awesome. They were each specific to a particular mood and each was repeated throughout the series whenever its mood was required. There was the light-hearted song for comic relief moments, the sad song, the sudden revelation song, the song for sinister places, the song of epicness, the song for battling, the song for showdowns with big bad guys or even bigger wild animals, and many other songs besides. Over them all, however, one tune reigned supreme, reserved for the discovery of mysterious places and the witnessing of grand phenomena - "The Song of Mysterious Awesomeness"! It was played only twelve times throughout all of the whole thirty-nine episodes, and all but one of those times were within the first half of the series. Gathered here, in this video, are the nine best instances of "The Song of Mysterious Awesomeness" arranged in sequence, from its first appearance in Episode 2 during the crossing of the Atlantic, until its final inclusion in Episode 29 as our heroes discover the secret of the Olmecs inside the Mountain of the Burning Shield. It is a life-changing experience.

Meanwhile, on the outside, Mendoza is worried about the injury of Laguerra and proposes to accompany them on board the Grand Condor, since it seems to have changed camp in the face of the actions of Ambrosius. Suddenly, scouts alert them that the nave of Ambrosius is approaching. They devise a strategy: while Sheikh Hakim will guide the children to the golden city, the three sailors will help the Chaldis to delay Ambrosius.
The sheikh leads the children to a temple, nestled in the heart of the mountain and then returns to help his men. Laguerra followed them discreetly. Inside, there are two stelae on which the children hang the sails. Then Tao manipulates a series of mirrors to illuminate the room. By transparency, a plan of the desert appears, indicating the position of the golden city! They take a parade in the mountain but arrive at a cul-de-sac. Esteban invokes the sun and reveals two locations in the cliff. Esteban and Zia position the centers of their medallions, showing a passage towards a giant woman statue, of which only the head emerges from the sand.
Not far from there, the zeftis of the Chaldis confront the nave of Ambrosius but can not stop it. Only Mendoza and Malik manage to climb aboard the nave to face Ambrosius and Gaspard. Laguerra warned Ambrosius through the top of the pyramid and joined him. While Malik is ejected by Zares, Mendoza is taken prisoner by Laguerra, to his great astonishment.
In the desert, the medallions of the children awaken the statue and the splendid and mysterious golden city of Kûmlar emerges from the sand.

The sheikh leads the children to a temple, nestled in the heart of the mountain and then returns to help his men. Laguerra followed them discreetly. Inside, there are two stelae on which the children hang the sails. Then Tao manipulates a series of mirrors to illuminate the room. By transparency, a plan of the desert appears, indicating the position of the golden city! They take a parade in the mountain but arrive at a cul-de-sac. Esteban invokes the sun and reveals two locations in the cliff. Esteban and Zia position the centers of their medallions, showing a passage towards a giant woman statue, of which only the head emerges from the sand.
Not far from there, the zeftis of the Chaldis confront the nave of Ambrosius but can not stop it. Only Mendoza and Malik manage to climb aboard the nave to face Ambrosius and Gaspard. Laguerra warned Ambrosius through the top of the pyramid and joined him. While Malik is ejected by Zares, Mendoza is taken prisoner by Laguerra, to his great astonishment.
In the desert, the medallions of the children awaken the statue and the splendid and mysterious golden city of Kûmlar emerges from the sand.

The children begin their ascent and arrive in the room of the luminous projections of the sages of Mu, Atlantis and Rana'Ori. The Princess wears a double royal medallion which they must find before Ambrosius.
Meanwhile, Ambrosius, Laguerra and Gaspard land at the top of the golden city and then arrive in the hall of the Princess's tomb. Ambrosius ordered Gaspard to return to the nave to watch Mendoza, followed by Laguerra. He opens the tomb thanks to the black suns and seizes the double medallion around the neck of the mummy, but the city then begins to close.
The children cross Gaspard then Laguerra and arrive in the room of the tomb that fills with sand. Ambrosius, drunk with power, wants to get rid of the elect now that he can open the golden cities with the double medallion. But Zia intervenes and, thanks to his gift, removes the crown of Ambrosius who can no longer control the black suns and then retrieves the double medallion. Ambrosius snatched it from his hands and pushed it away. Zia, about to fall into the void, is retained by Esteban then Tao.
The children are in a bad position when suddenly Mendoza, who has freed himself from the nave. While Ambrosius escapes, Mendoza rescues the children, soon helped by Laguerra who confesses to him his love and embraces him. But Gaspard intervenes, removes Laguerra and pushes Mendoza and the sailors in the void. Fortunately, they manage to escape through the transport discs and exit the golden city before it closes. Zia recovers the discs of the medallions in the eyes of the statue of Rana'Ori then all are welcomed by the Chaldis, Sancho and Pedro.
They observe the nave of Ambrosius moving towards the west and decide to follow it with the Great Condor, in the direction of the fifth city of gold.

In 1532 a Spanish orphan named Esteban joins Mendoza, a navigator, and his associates Sancho and Pedro, in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father. They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl (who was kidnapped by Mendoza), and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub)
The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. The travellers encounter the Maya, Inca, and Olmecs during their journey. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including a solar powered ship (the Solaris) and The Golden Condor, a huge solar-powered ornithopter (mechanical bird), capable of traveling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold.

▼ The Mysterious Cities of Gold (太陽の子エステバン Taiyō no ko Esuteban?, "Esteban, Child of the Sun"; French: Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or), is a French-Japanese animated series co-produced by DIC Entertainment and Studio Pierrot. The series premiered in Japan on NHK on 29 June 1982 and ran weekly for 39 episodes until its conclusion on 7 June 1983. Set in 1532, the series follows the adventures of a young Spanish boy named Esteban who joins a voyage to the New World in search of the lost Cities of Gold and his father.

In 1532 a Spanish orphan named Esteban joins Mendoza, a navigator, and his associates Sancho and Pedro, in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father. They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl (who was kidnapped by Mendoza), and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub)
The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. The travellers encounter the Maya, Inca, and Olmecs during their journey. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including a solar powered ship (the Solaris) and The Golden Condor, a huge solar-powered ornithopter (mechanical bird), capable of traveling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold.
