The Anglo-Scottish border or English-Scottish border (known locally as simply The Border) is the official border and mark of entry between England and Scotland. It runs for 96 miles (154 km) between Marshall Meadows Bay on the east coast and the Solway Firth in the west. It is Scotland's only land border. England shares a longer border with Wales.
The Firth of Forth was the border between the Picto-Gaelic Kingdom of Alba and the Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria in the early 10th century. It became the first Anglo-Scottish border with the annexation of Northumbria by Anglo-Saxon England in the mid 10th century. Lothian was taken by the Scots at the Battle of Carham in 1018 and the River Tweed became the de facto Anglo-Scottish border. The Solway-Tweed line was legally established in 1237 by the Treaty of York between England and Scotland. It remains the border today, with the exception of the Debatable Lands, north of Carlisle, and a small area around Berwick-upon-Tweed, which was taken by England in 1482. It is thus one of the oldest extant borders in the world, although Berwick was not fully annexed into England until 1746.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in the European Union. Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, it includes the island of "Great Britain" (a term also applied loosely to refer to the whole country), the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands.Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-southwest. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), the UK is the 80th-largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th-largest in Europe. It is also is the 21st-most populous country, with an estimated 64.5 million inhabitants.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its capital city is London, an important global city and financial centre with an urban population of 10,310,000, the fourth-largest in Europe and second-largest in the European Union. The current monarch—since 6 February 1952—is Queen Elizabeth II. The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The latter three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, respectively. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the United Kingdom, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation.

On the way back from Edinburgh we stopped over on the border :-)
Travelling to Edinburgh by train on the East Coast Main Line, I always noticed this sign just north of Berwick-upon-Tweed but with the speed of the train it was ever a fleeting glimpse. So while staying in Berwick in 2001, I decided to take a walk and find it, take some pictures and feel the moment of being between the two countries. In 2013 I repeated the walk, took some more pictures and filmed it.
A group of pranksters erect a fake passport control post on the road that crosses from England to Scotland ahead of the independence referendum on Thursday. With Scotland's independence referendum just three days away, a group of jokers decided to lighten the tone of the debate on Monday by erecting a spoof border post at Carter Bar, the point at which the A68 highway crosses from England into Scotland. The checkpoint was the brainwave of photographer Jon Parker Lee along with a group of English and Scottish friends. The gang erected a barrier along with signs reading "Scottish Border Agency Passport Control", and wore high-visibility jackets to suggest they were indeed authentic border authorities. "The debate needed a bit of a joke," Lee said. Polls suggest the race is extremely...
If Scotland votes for independence on September 18, few places in England will feel the impact as strongly as Berwick-upon-Tweed. A quaint town with a population of around 13-thousand, Berwick lies just four miles (6.4 kilometres) from the border. Local people cross back and forth all the time. But many fear independence would bring border guards, passports and separate currencies - and an economic jolt the town can ill afford. On the road between Edinburgh and London lies the line that officially divides the two countries. Three smart Scottish flags and a series of well-maintained stone and metal signs welcome visitors to Scotland. People travelling the other way are greeted, rather less impressively, by a British flag fraying at the edges - an apt metaphor, some might say, for...

The Time Team travel to Holy Island on the Scottish English border. Their mission is to excavate an open field that is locally known as the palace' No one alive today knows the reason for the name, but the team intend to find out. No copyright infringement has been intended by the uploading of this video; I am simply trying to share this amazingly interesting series.
This is an informal, unrehearsed singsong which took place in the bar of the Eskdale Hotel in Langholm on the afternoon of the Common Riding. A number of cornets from common ridings from places all across the English/Scottish border were in the bar. Some had brought horses and had ridden them around the boundaries of Langholm's Common land in the morning. Recitation and singing of songs is part of a very longstanding local tradition. My father was one of a family of ten from Longtown, at the Southern end of the Debateable Land. The family ran a dancehall and he would happily stand up to sing in any local pub or group of people and was known for it among his generation. He took my brother and I when we were young to the Langholm Common Riding and we walked up behind the thistle to the...

Jedburgh Jail in the Scottish Borders has a long and bloody history. Originally a Scottish Borders Castle as a stronghold against the English Invasion. Join the team as we return to the daunting prison blocks and spend time alone in the infamous cell 18 in the House of Correction. So much has happened on past overnight ghost hunts at Jedburgh we just have to return. On previous overnight ghost hunts at Jedburgh Jail, the former exercise yard has proved to be very active with the distinct sounds of bagpipes heard This is possibly an echo from past times as this jail was once a borders Castle who had a stronghold against the invading English. Jedburgh Jail has had numerous accounts of ghostly activity. Many full apparitions have been seen and there have been many reports of a ghostly figure...
