The Nexus 4 and Optimus G Pro, both high-end smartphones made by LG, yet they are hardly anything alike. From specifications to target demographic, the Optimus G Pro and Nexus 4 have next to nothing in common. The Optimus G Pro is about having as few compromises as possible -- an extra large 1080p display, ultra fast processor, large battery, ample storage with expansion and a 13-megapixel camera. The Nexus 4 is slightly dated and all about the price, and that comes with its fair share of compromises: limited storage, mediocre battery life, last year's processor technology and a mediocre camera. Even down to the materials used and device design, it's hard to believe the same company made these devices. The Nexus 4 is built very well and made of fine materials. First of all, if you're a Nexus user and love the stock Android platform, this is going to be the best phone you can snag. The specs are great and the price point is even better. It packs a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch HD (720p) display, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and more. Better yet, the $299 price point makes it affordable in comparison to the $500+ carrier-branded devices on the market. If you like to hack, root, or mod, this is going to be a solid smartphone for you. I can appreciate this device for being the best Nexus created - and for the tech nerd, this could be an ultimate device (despite the lack of LTE out of the box, which is frustrating). If you're coming in as a new smartphone owner or are a mainstream consumer, I'm not going to recommend it. This is a beautiful phone, but from a software perspective, it's bare - you're losing out on some of the software value adds that out of the box, improve the overall Android experience for most. There's always the option to hack and root to make the device your own (much like adding aftermarket parts to a car), but many want the experience out of the box. At the end of the day, it depends on what you want out of your device, and what you want it to do when you open the box. Google released the LG-made Nexus 4 back in November of 2012 to a crowd of salivating consumers. At the time, its specifications weren't top of the line, but certainly passable considering the affordable price point. Now with two major trade shows and a handful of one-off press events behind us, we have a horde of high-end smartphones quickly stealing the limelight. Fortunately for Google and LG, the Nexus brand is a bit of an anomaly in the mobile space. Nexus devices get updates directly from Google, meaning they are always among the first to (officially) receive any new features. This plus an extremely affordable price point manages to keep the Nexus relevant and lustrous, even as bigger, better smartphones enter the scene. But how has the Nexus 4, in particular, held up over the last four months? Check out episode 15 of After The Buzz to find out! --- Most new-device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they're widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we're lucky- as we work on our review. I'm still going strong with the device, though I still think there's a value play in Sense and TouchWiz. Consumers want something that offers value-added software out of the box, and for them, devices from Samsung and HTC deliver. That said, the hardware is fantastic, but I'm focusing on two things today. First, the Battery Widget Reborn (BETA) widget. I downloaded it from Google Play for free, and it's a fantastic widget that offers a ton of information about the battery. Since stock Android doesn't offer a physical battery percentage indicator, it's a must-have. Second, the Android 4.2.2 update. It's a minor one as Google prepares for Android Key Lime Pie, but it offers some useful updates like download time notifications.
