Bravo (formerly styled as Bravo!) is a Canadian English language Category A specialty channel owned by Bell Media. Bravo is an entertainment channel with a particular focus on television dramas and films, as well as art-related programming.

The channel was originally founded as a Canadian version of the U.S. channel Bravo (which is now owned by NBCUniversal). However, both channels have since diverged from their original formats; Bravo in the U.S. shifted to airing programming related to fashion and pop culture in 2003, while Bravo in Canada began to add more dramatic series to its lineup. Nonetheless, it still airs the few remaining arts-related programs its American counterpart airs, such as Inside the Actors Studio and Work of Art.

History[link]

In the 1980s, a precursor to Bravo! existed called C Channel. It was a national commercial-free pay television channel that focused on arts programming. C Channel launched on February 1, 1983 before it when bankrupt and ceased operations on June 30, 1983 due to its inability to attract a sufficient number of subscribers at a price of $16 per month.

Over 10 years later, another attempt at an arts-based channel was proposed when CHUM Limited applied to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for Bravo!. In June 1994, CHUM's application for Bravo! was approved, citing its nature of service as focusing on "performance and drama programming, as well as documentary and discussion."^[1]

Bravo! launched on January 1, 1995 with the tagline, "NewStyleArtsChannel". It focused on arts programming, including music, ballet, literature, television and film drama, visual arts, modern dance, opera and architecture. As a condition of licence, Bravo! was to contribute a predetermined amount or percentage of its revenues to ArtsFACT (now called Bravo!FACT), a fund established to provide grants for the production of Canadian short films covering a wide range of arts-related disciplines. Films funded by Bravo!FACT have regularly aired on the channel.

In July 2006, Bell Globemedia (later called CTVglobemedia) announced that it would purchase CHUM for an estimated $1.7 billion CAD, included in the sale was Bravo!^[2] The sale was subject to CRTC approval and was approved in June 2007,^[3] with the transaction completed on June 22, 2007.

After CTVglobemedia's purchase of Bravo!, the channel increasingly shifted its focus toward more television and film dramas such as Mad Men and Criminal Minds, and lessening its focus on arts programming.

On September 10, 2010, BCE (a minority shareholder in CTVglobemedia) announced that it planned to acquire 100% interest in CTVglobemedia for a total debt and equity transaction cost of $3.2 billion CAD.^[4] The deal which required CRTC approval, was approved on March 7, 2011^[5] and closed on April 1 of that year, on which CTVglobemedia was rebranded Bell Media.^[6]

While under Bell Media ownership, the shift toward television and film dramas and general entertainment was extended and is the point at which the channel exists today. This was further emphasized with a new logo introduced on May 14, 2012, rendering the channel's name as simply Bravo, dropping the previous "square" logo that it had used since its original launch, and no longer resembling any logo that its American counterpart had used.

Eddie Bravo (born Edgar Cano on May 15, 1970) is a Mexican-American practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who holds a second degree black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado. He is most famous for his win as a brown belt against Royler Gracie by triangle choke in the 2003 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling championships and his particular style of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, called 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also known for his mixed martial arts commentating on the Ultimate Fighting Championship and music composition. In an interview he advocated marijuana as performance enhancing.^[2][3] He lives in Hollywood, California, where he ran his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school out of Legends MMA until 5/11/12. Chan Sung Jung[link]

At UFC Fight Night 24, Chan Sung Jung, aka "the Korean Zombie" forced Leonard Garcia to tap to a spine lock called "the twister", the lock is also known in amateur wrestling as a "guillotine", not to be confused with the guillotine choke which is used widely in MMA. It was the first time the submission had been used to finish a fight in UFC history. He talked about the move after the fight, "It's something I saw a long time ago on the Internet on video," Jung said. "It's one of Eddie Bravo's moves. It's something I practiced because it looks fun and I do it quite a bit in practice. I have always told people I was going to try it sometime in competition. I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to, finally."^[7]

Leonard Garcia (born July 14, 1979 in Plainview, Texas) is an American mixed martial artist who currently competes in the featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He previously fought for the UFC in the lightweight division before moving down to the featherweight division in the World Extreme Cagefighting. Garcia currently trains at Greg Jackson's Submission Fighting located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is known for his brawling style and for having an "iron chin", having never being knocked out in MMA competition.

Mixed martial arts career[link]

Garcia began his career in 1999, competing on the regional circuit in the Western United States. Garcia competed in the first WEC event back in 2001 at WEC 1. After compiling an impressive 8–1 beginning to his professional career, Garcia took a three year break.

Returning to action in 2006, Garcia was tabbed as a short notice replacement against high ranking contender Roger Huerta at UFC 69 where he lost a very one sided unanimous decision, after taking an awful lot of punishment throughout the fight.

Garcia then defeated Allen Berube by submission at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale. In his next bout Garcia lost via decision to Cole Miller at UFC Fight Night 11. After going 1–2 with the UFC, Garcia was released from his contract.

World Extreme Cagefighting[link]

Garcia defeated Hiroyuki Takaya via first round KO at WEC 32. In his next fight, Leonard knocked out former undisputed UFC lightweight champion and WEC featherweight title challenger Jens Pulver seventy-two seconds into first round at WEC 36.

On March 1, 2009, Garcia lost the WEC Featherweight title match against champion Mike Brown. Brown landed a huge overhand right, knocking Gracia down in the first 30 seconds of the fight, landed some ground and pound, and then secured a fight ending arm triangle choke.

Garcia defeated Jameel Massouh by controversial split decision on August 9, 2009 at WEC 42. In his next fight, Garcia lost to Judo specialist Manvel Gamburyan on November 18, 2009 at WEC 44 via unanimous decision.^[1]

Garcia was expected to face Diego Nunes on March 6, 2010 at WEC 47,^[2] but Nunes was forced from the card with an injury.^[3] Garcia instead faced former UFC fighter George Roop^[4] with the bout ending in a split draw that was seen as strange as many felt Roop had won the fight.

Garcia faced WEC newcomer Chan Sung Jung on April 24, 2010 at WEC 48. Garcia replaced Cub Swanson who was forced from the card with an injury.^[5] The fight went the full three rounds and Garcia won in a controversial split decision. The fight won Fight of the Night honors, being hailed by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and announcer Joe Rogan as "the best fight I've seen in my life."

Garcia faced Mark Hominick on September 30, 2010 at WEC 51.^[6] He lost the fight via split decision.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

In October 2010, World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, all WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC.^[7] Garcia was expected to face Tyler Toner at The Ultimate 12 Finale,^[8] but Garcia was pulled from the bout with Toner in favor of a bout with Nam Phan.^[9]

Garcia won the fight via a controversial split decision. Garcia and Phan received Fight of the Night honors for their performances.^[10] This was the first televised featherweight bout in the UFC.

A rematch with Phan was expected on March 26, 2011 at UFC Fight Night 24.^[11] However, Phan was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Chan Sung Jung.^[12] Garcia lost to Jung in the second round, falling victim to the first twister submission in UFC history.

Garcia was expected to face The Ultimate Fighter 12 alumni Alex Caceres on August 14, 2011 at UFC on Versus 5.^[13] However, Garcia was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Jim Hettes.^[14]

Garcia fought Nam Phan in a rematch UFC 136. Garcia lost via unanimous decision in a fight that earned Fight of the Night honors.^[15]

Garcia was expected to face Zhang Tie Quan on February 26, 2012 at UFC 144. However, Garcia was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by promotional newcomer Issei Tamura.^[16]

Garcia is expected to face Matt Grice on June 8, 2012 at UFC on FX 3.^[17]

Personal life[link]

In March 2008, Garcia was arrested as part of an alleged cocaine ring, which put his career on hold. According to Garcia, "I had a buddy, a really good friend of mine in Lubbock, and he was into things that weren't good," he said. "I knew about what the guy was up to but he was a friend of mine. The law says even if he's your friend, you are required to report on the guy. The other 11 guys, I didn't know any of them." Three months later, he was exonerated.^[18]

Luis Manuel Ferri Llopis (August 3, 1944 — April 16, 1973), better known by his stage name Nino Bravo, was a Spanish pop singer.

Early life[link]

Bravo was born near Valencia. His father, Luis Manuel, a salesman, moved the family to Valencia, in search of better opportunities, when Bravo was three years old.

Nino Bravo was a shy child. He had a tendency to befriend older people, and, in 1958, he met bassist Vicente López. López introduced Bravo to other Valencian musicians, including the legendary Paco Ramón.

It had never occurred to Bravo, before he met López, that anyone would enjoy listening to him sing. Bravo realized that he could sing while he was on a trip with López and Ramón. López later recalled that he was surprised, upon waking up from a nap, to hear Bravo singing Domenico Modugno's hit "Libero". Deeply impressed, Lopez predicted that Nino Bravo would become a superstar.

Meanwhile, Bravo took a job as a jeweler, and also worked for his mother, who owned a supermarket. When he was sixteen, he became a fan of the famous Chilean singer Antonio Prieto, whose song, "La Novia" ("The Bride"), had become a number one hit in Spain. Bravo and his friends formed a band, "Los Hispanicos", and made a cover recording of "La Novia".

Singing[link]

Bravo also enjoyed Rock & Roll music. He began singing at a hotel, where he sang his favorite English song, "Only You".

Eventually, Bravo was approached by a recording company agent who tried to convince him to sign with his label. Bravo declined because the projected contract would not include the entire "Los Hispanicos" band.

In 1964, "Los Hispánicos" changed their name to "Los Superson". At the same time, their luck changed. They won a local radio contest, then moved on to Benidorm, where they became quite popular.

Shortly thereafter Bravo was called up for military duty. Suffering from depression during his military service, Bravo contemplated quitting his singing career.

While Bravo was away in the military, López befriended Miguel Siuran, a radio personality, who was impressed by Los Superson's sound and wanted to help them get a recording contract, and wanted to include two of the band's songs on another singer's LP. López declined the offer, because he felt that Bravo should be included on the album as well.

When Bravo returned from the service, López talked to him enthusiastically about the contract, however Siuran scornfully asked if Bravo could sing like Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck or John Rowles. Once Siuran heard Bravo's voice, however, the radio man was deeply impressed.

Siuran Miguel Siurán took Bravo to a music festival. Although Bravo did not win at the festival, Siurán became convinced that it was time for Bravo to become a star, and, soon afterwards, Siurán came up with the artistic name of Nino Bravo.

Bravo and Siurán first tried unsuccessfully to get a contract with RCA. They then went to Fonogram in Madrid.

Bravo and Siuran returned to Valencia, where Siurán published an newspaper ad announcing "Nino Bravo y Los Superson". Shortly thereafter, Fonogram called to offer a contract for an album with Bravo and Los Superson.

In March 1969, shortly after their album hit the market, Bravo sang before a live audience for the first time. After the concert, frenzied admirers tore down Bravo's concert posters.

Marriage[link]

On April 20, 1970 he married María Amparo Martínez Gil and their first daughter, Amparo, was born on January 1972. He also had a second daughter, Eva, who was born after he died.

Fonogram wanted Bravo to go solo, and in 1970, Siurán was replaced by José Meri as Bravo's manager.

Fame[link]

In that same year, Bravo participated for the first time in the prestigious Barcelona Music Festival. He would not gain international acclaim until two festivals later, however. After Bravo received favorable reviews from a festival audience in Athens, Greece, he went on to impress festival goers at the Rio de Janeiro Festival.

After being exposed to international audiences in Europe and Latin America, Bravo and Meri parted ways, and Bravo took on a new manager. Bravo's first solo album was soon released, and the song "Te quiero, te quiero", by the composer Augusto Algueró, became an international hit, which is now considered a classic by many Hispanic music critics. Bravo's first album, "Tu Cambiarás" ("You Will Change"), sold well, particularly in Colombia, where Bravo became very popular.

Bravo then sang on the Spaniard television contest show, "Pasaporte a Dublín" ("Passport to Dublin)" in which the winner would represent Spain in 1971's Eurovision.

After the show, Bravo then went on tour in Colombia and Brazil, where he participated, for a second time in the Rio de Janeiro Festival.

Also in 1971, Nino Bravo recorded his second album, which went untitled. The album would later be posthumously released, in CD format, entitled "Puerta de amor" ("Love's Door").

Third album[link]

In 1972, Bravo released his third album, "Libre" ("Free"). "Libre" proved to be both a huge success and a very controversial album for Bravo, as many Latin American dictators of the time banned the album's title song from being played in their countries, such as Cuba. As a consequence, Bravo was also banned from singing his banned songs in certain countries. His success, however, was such that he was widely known in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Republica Dominicana, Peru, and among the Hispanic population of the United States. In Chile, the title song from the album, became a unifying element for all the followers of the new military regime which came into power on September 11, 1973, when Bigote Arrocet sang "Libre" in honour of Bravo during 1974 Festival de la Canción de Viña del Mar, in front of Augusto Pinochet and his wife.

In January 1973, Bravo's first daughter, Amparo, was born. A second daughter, Eva, would later arrive, but Nino never got to see her.

Bravo's words in a 1973 interview would prove to be prophetic: speaking of his last Latin American tour, he referred to a song named "Noelia" as "(his) last song". Another song that he released that same year, "Un beso y una flor" ("A Kiss and a Flower") became one of Bravo's greatest international hits.(Loosely translated, the song's chorus was "in departure, a kiss and a flower"). On March 14 of that year, Bravo performed his last concert, before his Valencia fans.

Death[link]

On April 16, 1973, Bravo was driving his BMW 2800 along with the Humo duo and Miguel Diurni when his car was involved in an accident about 100 km southeast of Madrid. He died on the way to the hospital as consequence of his injuries. He had just signed a five year record deal with the European record label Polydor. At the time of his death, Nino Bravo was just 28 years old.
