Ukiyo-e woodblock printmaking with Keizaburo Matsuzaki
Master printer Keizaburo Matsuzaki visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales in March 2010 in conjunction with the exhibition Hymn to beauty: the art of Utamaro. He brought the woodblocks to create a print of Takashima Ohisa, the teahouse waitress, designed by Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806) in the 1790s. Gallery visitors were amazed to witness Matsuzaki's deft touch as he applied seventeen colours with perfect alignment. Each colour was rubbed with the printers most precious tool, the baren. The final touch was a dusting of mica. Matsuzaki hails from Arakawa-ku in Tokyo and has been a printer since he was fifteen years old.

Ukiyo-E slideshow
A slideshow of ancient Japanese Edo period art, or Ukiyo-E, centred around Geisha, set to credits music from (guess!) Memoirs of a Geisha. The art is by Hiroshige, Hokusai, and others. They come from some interent sites and also my personal books and card collections. Sorry for the kinks in quality on some pictures. I have tried to make it exciting and fit the music, and the Ukiyo-E is very beautiful, so I hope you enjoy it!

Pictures of the Floating World (Ukiyo-e)
Ukiyo-e, translated as Pictures of the Floating World. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries. Ukiyo-e is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. Usually, the word Ukiyo is literally translated as "Floating World" in English, referring to a conception of an Evanescent world, impernament, fleeting beauty and a realm of entertainments (Kabuki, courtesans, geisha) divorced from the responsibilities of the mundane, every day world. Pictures of the Floating World Ukiyo-e are considered a genre unto themselves. Quote by Asai Ryöi: ... living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves, singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating... refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current... this is what we call the floating world... Ukiyo-e were affordable because they could be mass- produced. They were mainly ment for townsmen, who were generally not wealthy enough to afford an original painting. The original subject of Ukiyo-e was city life, in particular activities and scenes from the entertainment district. Beautiful courtesans, bulky sumo wrestlers and popular actors would be portrayed while engaged in appealing activities. Later on landscapes also became popular. Political subjects, and idividuals above the lowest strata of society (courtesans ...

Ukiyo-e (video: solu, audio: richard devine)
UKIYO-E is a live recording of one of SOLU's videoprocessing sessions made with max/msp/nato.The sound track is cprec from Richard Devine, an Atlanta based experimental musician. The name of the piece, UKIYO-E, is a japanese term translated as "prints from the floating worlds", which in the ancient times referred to the worlds between, "out of reality" as for example the world of geishas. The images of the people were shot in New York just before the Iraq war started, there are also landscapes from Japan, Sarajevo and Barcelona, all covered with "post-nuclear" noise.
