Lukacs led to the Culture War
Georg Lukacs and Ernst Bloch debated the relative merits of Expressionism as against Socialist Realism in 1938 as Hitler was taking Czechoslovakia and Austria. Today we debate Dave Chappelle comedy specials and comic book movies as capitalism sets up multiple crises including right-wing populist movements, climate change disasters, and perpetual proxy wars. Should we move beyond cultural concerns or are we in desperate need of a new class consciousness?

Part V - Georg Lukács: Session I - Lecture by Professor Sobhanlal Datta Gupta
A series of lectures by eminent scholars; coordinated by Professor Sobhanlal Datta Gupta, former S. N. Banerjee Professor of Political Science, Calcutta University.
As we know, the German intellectual tradition is of crucial importance for understanding of social sciences. Many important clues to the understanding of new perspectives like the debate on modernity and Enlightenment, postmodernism, postcolonialism, identity and self etc. can be traced to the contributions of the German tradition. Considering the importance of this theme, Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata is going to launch a programme of lectures on the following thinkers, namely, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Max Weber, Nietzsche, Freud, Husserl, Heidegger, Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse, Lukács, Popper, Gadamer, Wittgenstein, A...

The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.

This video attempt to represent the chapter ‘Nietzsche as Founder of Irrationalism in the Imperialist Period’ by Lukacs. The video starts by situating Nietzsche’s intellectual context in the critical recognition of history as the site of an unfolding drama in which humankind must play an active role. The rest of the video is dedicated to Lukacs’ analysis of Nietzsche’s philosophy, where he argues that it was Nietzsche who provided a morality for the socially militant bourgeoisie and middle-class intelligentsia of imperialism. The video concludes by elaborating on the importance of nuance when looking at Nietzsche’s thinking.

This interview was filmed with Georg Lukács in socialist Hungary. It focuses on the time period 1918-1929 of his life. In the Hungarian soviet republic (1919) he functioned as people's commissar for public education and then as a red army political commissar. After the Romanians defeated the soviet republic, he fled to Vienna, but came back to Hungary for a secret mission to organise the banned communist party in 1929.
Between 1920 and 1944, the country was ruled by the conservative Horthy dictatorship and fought as an ally of Germany in the Second World War. After 1945, Hungary became socialist again, but this time due to Soviet occupation. Lukács took part in the 1956 revolutionary government fighting for non-stalinist socialism. After the USSR crushed the revolution, Lukács was arrested and deported to Romania. Then he was allowed to come back and the communist party rehabilitated him in 1967 after a period of being stigmatised.
