Run batted in or RBI is a statistic used in baseball and softball to credit a batter when the outcome of his at-bat results in a run being scored, except in certain situations such as when an error is made on the play. The first team to track RBI was the Buffalo Bisons.

Common nicknames for an RBI include "Ribby" and "Rib."

The plural of RBI is "RBIs". A common mistake is to conclude that the plural should be "RBI" because "runs" is the pluralized noun, but the entire acronym is properly pluralized.^[1]

Major League Baseball Rules[link]

The official rulebook of Major League Baseball states in Rule 10.04:

(a) The official scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores:

(1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter's safe hit (including the batter's home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder's choice, unless Rule 10.04(b) applies;

(2) by reason of the batter becoming a runner with the bases full (because of a base on balls, an award of first base for being touched by a pitched ball or for interference or obstruction); or

(3) when, before two are out, an error is made on a play on which a runner from third base ordinarily would score.

(b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in

(1) option when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play; or

(2) when a fielder is charged with an error because the fielder muffs a throw at first base that would have completed a force double play.

(c) The official scorer's judgment must determine whether a run batted in shall be credited for a run that scores when a fielder holds the ball or throws to a wrong base. Ordinarily, if the runner keeps going, the official scorer should credit a run batted in; if the runner stops and takes off again when the runner notices the misplay, the official scorer should credit the run as scored on a fielder's choice.

Criticism[link]

The perceived significance of the RBI is displayed by the fact that it is one of the three categories that compose the triple crown. In addition, career RBI are often cited in debates over who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. However, critics, particularly within the field of sabermetrics, argue that RBI measures the quality of the lineup more than it does the player himself since an RBI can only be credited to a player if one or more batters preceding him in the batting order reached base (the exception to this being a solo home run, in which the batter is credited with driving himself in).^[2][3] This implies that better offensive teams—and therefore, the teams in which the most players get on base—tend to produce hitters with higher RBI totals than equivalent hitters on lesser-hitting team.^[4]

Montek Singh Ahluwalia (born 24 November 1943) is an Indian economist and civil servant. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of the Republic of India. He was previously the first Director of the Independent Evaluation Office at the International Monetary Fund.

Early life and education[link]

Montek Singh Ahluwalia was born in New Delhi, India. He studied at St. Patrick's High School, Secunderabad, Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, and Bishop Cotton School Shimla, then graduated with a B.A. (Hons) degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, University of Delhi. He received the BA(Hons) degree as a Rhodes scholar from the University of Oxford having studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. He also studied for a BPhil in Economics at Oxford University, which the university later reclassified as an MPhil. While at Oxford, he was the president of the prestigious Oxford Union.The 164-year-old Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) on Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, at the 11th Convocation Ceremony of the institute held on 12 November 2011 at IIT Roorkee.

Ahuluwalia, after graduating from University of Oxford, joined the World Bank during the tenures of Hollis Chenery and Robert MacNamara. At the age of 28, he became the youngest "Division Chief" in the World Bank's bureaucracy.

Prior to taking up his position at the IMF, Ahluwalia was a Member of the Planning Commission in New Delhi as well as a Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.

Being not a member of the Indian Civil Service, he held the following positions of civil servants in the central government:

• Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs
• Secretary, Ministry of Commerce
• Special Secretary to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and

Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar (born 12 October 1942) is a prominent Indian journalist and columnist. He is consulting editor for the Economic Times and writes regularly for the Economic Times and The Times of India.

Early life[link]

Aiyar was born to V. Sankar Aiyar, a chartered accountant and Bhagyalakshmi Sankar. His elder brother, Mani Shankar Aiyar is a politician and served as Minister for Panchayati Raj in the previous Indian government.

An alumnus of The Doon School and St Stephen's College, University of Delhi, he earned a master's degree in economics from Magdalen College, Oxford at the University of Oxford.

He is also a research fellow at the Cato Institute,^[1] a prominent libertarian think-tank in Washington DC, and an occasional media consultant to the World Bank.

He previously served as editor for The Financial Express (1988–90) and the Eastern Economist (1980–82).

Swaminathan Aiyar writes a popular weekly column titled "Swaminomics" in the Times of India, where he discusses economic and political issues pertaining to India and the world. Aiyar has prepared several reports and papers for the World Bank. In 1976-85 and 1990–98, he was also the India correspondent of The Economist.

He has two books to his credit: Towards Globalisation (1992) and Swaminomics: Escape from the Benevolent Zookepers (2008).

He is currently consulting editor of The Economic Times, India's leading financial daily that is part of Bennett, Coleman & Co, the same company that owns The Times of India.

Anklesaria, Mr Aiyar's second name is taken from his wife's maiden name and he claims to have taken on this name to exhibit some sort of equality where men will take on their wives names if wives take on their husbands. His wife, Shahnaz, is a Parsi.

Aiyar has three children: Pallavi Aiyar, Shekhar and Rustam. He does not believe in God.^[2]
