Geoffrey Rush - Australian of the Year 2012
Geoffrey Rush has now celebrated 40 years as an Australian actor, achieving the rare international distinction of the 'Triple Crown' -- an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy. He also has three Australian Film Institute honours, three British Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, four Screen Actors' Guild Awards, and last year was inducted into the ranks of Australia's elite with a Helpmann Award. When he received his fourth Academy Award nomination playing Australian therapist Lionel Logue in The King's Speech which he also executively produced, the revival of Belvoir's The Diary of a Madman played to acclaim in Sydney and in New York. He starred in and executive-produced Fred Schepisi's film of Patrick White's Nobel Laureate-winning novel The Eye of the Storm, and played Lady Bracknell in the MTC's celebrated production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Seen as a creative mentor by many, Geoffrey philanthropically supports young actors and arts companies. He is Patron of the Melbourne International Film Festival; of Toowoomba's Empire Theatre Foundation distributing bursaries to young performers; and of the Spina Bifida Foundation Victoria. He is an Ambassador for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and UNICEF Australia. In 2011 he was honoured to be appointed as foundation President of the newly-established Australian Academy Of Cinema and Television Arts.

Director biography
Born in Poland in 1946, he migrated to Australia with his family in 1949. As a young man, he developed a passion for photography and creative writing, and also studied and practised law. He left his work as a criminal barrister when offered a scholarship to the National Film School in England, and subsequently joined BBC Television as a director on the Nationwide program, followed by other documentary and current affairs programs for Thames, Granada and Channel Four Television. His breakthrough project as a writer-director was The Case of Cruelty to Prawns, a comedy-drama that won the Best Television Film Award at the Melbourne Film Festival. Some of his notable credits include the murder-mystery feature Georgia, starring Judy Davis, which won eight Australian Film Institute nominations; the much-honoured The Dunera Boys, starring Bob Hoskins -- the true story of 2,000 English Jews who were mistakenly suspected as Nazi spies and transported to Australia in 1940; the award-winning Matter of Convenience, a tele-movie about marriages of convenience; and Plead Guilty, Get a Bond, about a tribal aboriginal woman and her conflict with the Australian legal system. He is best known in the USA as a writer and director of comedy features, though more recently he brought his distinctive mix of the preposterous and the perceptive to Hollywood Gold, a personal documentary of his misadventures in the Beverley Hills jewelery trade at Oscar time. His TV work includes episodes of Ally McBeal and Touched By An Angel, as well several segments of the most popular drama series in Australia, Sea Change. After a long hiatus, he has seen The Sessions scooping both the Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2012.

Synopsis
Riveting performances from John Hawkes and Helen Hunt anchor this moving and unabashedly droll film about a 38-year-old man confined to an iron lung and his endeavours to lose his virginity. Paralysed after childhood polio, Mark (Hawkes) has lived life to the fullest, defying all medical expectations and maintaining a rich intellectual career as a poet and journalist. While his quick wit makes him an irrepressible flirt, his encounters with women are mostly confined to his caregivers, and physical intimacy continues to elude him. Frustrated and fearful, he raises the issue with his progressive priest (William H Macy) and ultimately engages a sex surrogate (Hunt) whose services will be limited to six sessions and are designed to assist disabled people transition to sexual activity. Based on the autobiographical writings of Mark O'Brien, who was also the subject of Jessica Yu's Academy Award winning documentary Breathing Lessons, writer-director Ben Lewin's superb script achieves a fine balance between the emotional poignancy of the story and the wry, self-deprecating humour of its lead character, transforming a potentially confronting subject into a warm, compelling and highly enjoyable film.

Sam Worthington interview on ROVE (live with Rove McManus) - FINAL ROVE SHOW.
Sam Worthington was handpicked for AVATAR by James Cameron and made his mark internationally starring opposite Christian Bale earlier this year in "Terminator Salvation".
Sam grew up in WA, moved to Queensland and found his way down to Sydney. After doing a series of jobs including brick laying, he graduated from NIDA and acted in theatre productions.
In 2000, Worthington made his feature film debut with a starring role in the Australian film "Bootmen," in the role of Adam Garcia's brooding older brother. His performance garnered him an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. His subsequent Australian film credits include "Dirty Deeds," with John Goodman, Toni Collette and Sam Neill, for which he earned a Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor; and "Gettin' Square," with David Wenham. He also had a small role in the World War II drama "Hart's War," starring Bruce Willis.
It was his layered performance in Cate Shortland's critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2004 film "Somersault" that brought Worthington international attention. He won an AFI Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and earned his second FCCA Award nomination. In addition, the film made a clean sweep of the year's AFI Awards, winning in all 13 film categories - a first in the awards' history.
Worthington went on to star in the title role of Geoffrey Wright's 2006 contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." He has also been seen in John Dahl's "The Great Raid" and the horror thriller "Rogue."
Worthington's Australian television credits include starring roles in two award-winning projects: "Love My Way," which has won three AFI Awards for Best Television Drama Series; and "The Surgeon", which was nominated for an AFI Award for Best Telefeature or Miniseries. He also starred in the "Delivery Man" episode of "Two Twisted," a "Twilight Zone"-like anthology series produced by Bryan Brown.
Upcoming films that Sam has starring roles in are; the big budget action-adventure fantasy epic "Clash of the Titans," playing the lead role of Perseus under the direction of Louis Leterrier as well as two very different independent features: the romantic drama "Last Night," opposite Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes; and the post-World War II dramatic thriller "The Debt," directed by John Madden and also starring Helen Mirren. (These films have all been filmed and will be released next year).

Mad Dog Morgan
Directed by Philippe Mora (1976)
Starring Dennis Hopper, Jack Thompson, David Gulpilil, Bill Hunter
Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet) stars as Dan Morgan, the infamous real-life 1800's outlaw, an Irish immigrant working as a gold digger in the treacherous Australian brush. When his comrades reject him, Morgan resorts to stealing horses, and is caught and sentenced to jail. After years of abuse and brutality, Morgan is released, and falls back into his outlaw ways. Soon Morgan is wanted at any price, dead or alive, setting the backdrop for this intense and riveting thriller. "An excellent early example of the Australian revival, this is a pacy, violent bushranger saga." -- Time Out Film Guide. Mad Dog Morgan was a worldwide theatrical hit in 1977, and was nominated by the Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Director (Philippe Mora) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Bill Hunter). The film also stars Australian stars Jack Thompson (Breaker Morant, The Assassination of Richard Nixon) and David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Crocodile Dundee).

Film Description: The first of two consecutive films to see director Peter Weir team with Mel Gibson (the other being The Year of Living Dangerously), Gallipoli follows two idealistic young friends, Frank (Gibson) and Archy (Mark Lee), who join the Australian army during World War I and fight the doomed Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey. The first half of the film documents the lives of the young men in Australia, detailing their personalities and beliefs. The second half of the movie chronicles the ill-fated and ill-planned battle, where the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps is hopelessly outmatched by the enemy forces. Gallipoli was the recipient of eight prizes at the 1981 Australian Film Institute Awards.
