Howard Zinn on the War in Iraq, Politics and News Events (2005)
Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 -- January 27, 2010) was an American historian, author, playwright, and social activist. He was a political science professor at Boston University for 24 years and taught history at Spelman College for 7 years. Zinn wrote more than 20 books, including his best-selling and influential A People's History of the United States. He wrote extensively about the civil rights and anti-war movements, and labor history of the United States. His memoir, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was also the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn's life and work. Zinn opposed the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq and wrote several books about it. In an interview with The Brooklyn Rail he said, We certainly should not be initiating a war, as it's not a clear and present danger to the United States, or in fact, to anyone around it. If it were, then the states around Iraq would be calling for a war on it. The Arab states around Iraq are opposed to the war, and if anyone's in danger from Iraq, they are. At the same time, the U.S. is violating the U.N. charter by initiating a war on Iraq. Bush made a big deal about the number of resolutions Iraq has violated—and it's true, Iraq has not abided by the resolutions of the Security Council. But it's not the first nation to violate Security Council resolutions. Israel has violated Security Council resolutions every year since 1967. Now, however, the U.S. is violating a fundamental principle of the U.N. Charter, which is that nations can't initiate a war—they can only do so after being attacked. And Iraq has not attacked us.[57] He asserted that the U.S. would end Gulf War II when resistance within the military increased in the same way resistance within the military contributed to ending the U.S. war in Vietnam. The war eventually ended in December 2011, however, it was the dramatic decline in insurgent attacks and sectarian violence that led to the withdrawal of American forces. Zinn compared the demand by a growing number of contemporary U.S. military families to end the war in Iraq to parallel demands "in the Confederacy in the Civil War, when the wives of soldiers rioted because their husbands were dying and the plantation owners were profiting from the sale of cotton, refusing to grow grains for civilians to eat."[58] Jean-Christophe Agnew, Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, told the Yale Daily News in May 2007 that Zinn's historical work is "highly influential and widely used".[59] He observed that it is not unusual for prominent professors such as Zinn to weigh in on current events, citing a resolution opposing the war in Iraq that was recently ratified by the American Historical Association. Agnew added: "In these moments of crisis, when the country is split—so historians are split". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_zinn- published: 22 Jan 2014

The Sorrows Multiply
The Sorrows Multiply explores the power of design to evoke the innumerable scale of contemporary events. A direct response to the situation in Iraq, the exhibition attempts to visualise the magnitude and tragedy of the ongoing conflict.
Situated below the ceiling of the gallery, metres of paper squares are stacked. 115,800 in total they represent the most conservative estimate of civilian causalities in the conflict. Over the course of the exhibition they are mechanically pushed to the floor below. Blown around the gallery space, they build in number consuming the room in a violent and mesmeric snowstorm.
Since the US led invasion of March 20, 2003, thousands of Iraqi civilians have died. Estimates vary between one hundred thousand and a million*. In a country where half the population is aged under 19 the effects of this devastation are particularly profound.
For each death countless more lives have been destroyed: through physical injury, psychological damage and personal loss.
The United States government withdrew most of their remaining troops and declared the war’s end in December 2011. Despite claiming to have left a “a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq” thousands continue to die in Iraq as a result of political instability and sectarian violence

WikiLeaks' Julian Assange & Philosopher Slavoj Zizek In Conversation With Amy Goodman 2 of 9
DemocracyNow.org - In one of his first public events since being held under house arrest, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appeared in London Saturday for a conversation with Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, moderated by Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman. They discuss the impact of WikiLeaks on world politics, the release of the Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, and Cablegate — the largest trove of classified U.S. government records in history.
Watch Part 3 of 9:
http://vimeo.com/26058592
“From being inside the center of the storm, I have learned not just about the structure of government, not just about how power flows in many governments around the world that we’ve dealt with, but rather how history is shaped and distorted by the media,” Assange said. Assange also talks about his new defense team, as well as U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning, the accused Army whistleblower who has been jailed for the past year. Assange is currently under house arrest in Norfolk, outside London, pending a July 12 appeals hearing on his pending extradition to Sweden for questioning in a sexual misconduct case. He has now spent six months under house arrest, despite not being charged with a crime in any country. Assange was wearing an ankle monitor under his boot and Saturday’s event concluded shortly after 6 p.m. so he could return to his bail address by his curfew.
The event also marked the publication of the paperback edition of Žižek’s "Living in the End Times," in which he argues that new ways of using and sharing information, in particular WikiLeaks, are one of a number of harbingers of the end of global capitalism as we know it.
The discussion was sponsored by the Frontline Club, founded in part to remember journalists killed on the front lines of war.

Aid for Syrian Refugees in Northern Iraq | People & Politics
A new round of sectarian violence appears to be under way in Iraq. Terrorist attacks against civilians have once again become common. Iraq is also dealing with a major influx of refugees from the civil war in neighboring Syria. German relief aid is being distributed at the Domiz refugee camp.
