Jason Raymond Bay (born September 20, 1978, in Trail, British Columbia) is a Canadian professional baseball outfielder who currently plays for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. Bay has previously played for the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Boston Red Sox.

Bay experienced success as a player very early, playing on a Trail team that reached the 1990 Little League World Series. In 1999, he played for the Chatham Athletics in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Bay attended Gonzaga University.

Minor league career (2000–2002)[link]

Bay was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft and was assigned to the Expos' Short-Season A team in Burlington, Vermont, the Vermont Expos. In 2001, Bay was assigned to the Expos’ High Single-A team in Jupiter. He began the year slowly, and in May he was moved to Clinton of the Midwest League. Bay reached base in his first 26 games, then went on to bat .362 and win the league batting title. In all, he batted .315 with 14 home runs and 75 runs batted in on the year.

The Expos traded Bay to the New York Mets on March 24, 2002 with Jim Serrano for Lou Collier. The Mets traded Bay to the San Diego Padres with Josh Reynolds and Bobby Jones for Jason Middlebrook at the 2002 trading deadline.

Bay debuted with the Padres on May 23, 2003, getting his first major league hit, a home run, in the ninth inning. Two days later, he suffered a broken right wrist after being hit by a pitch.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2003–2008)[link]

On August 26, 2003, Bay was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, along with Óliver Pérez and Cory Stewart in August in exchange for Brian Giles. He finished the season with a .287 batting average, four home runs, and 14 RBI in 30 games.

Bay began the 2004 season on the disabled list due to surgery during the offseason, and did not rejoin the team until May. Despite missing the beginning of the season, he still produced the best offensive numbers of any National League rookie. He batted .282 in 120 games, leading all major league rookies in home runs (26) and RBIs (82). He also led all NL rookies in slugging percentage (.550), extra base hits (54) and total bases (226). With his 26 home runs, Bay broke a Pirates rookies record of 23 set by Johnny Rizzo in 1936 and matched by Ralph Kiner in 1946. Selected as the 2004 NL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News, Bay was the second Pittsburgh Pirates player honored with the award, after second baseman Johnny Ray in 1982. Bay was also the first Canadian player to win the award.

2005–2006[link]

In 2005, Bay was selected to his first All-Star Game as a reserve outfielder. He was the only player on either roster not to appear in the game. Bay also appeared in the 2005 Century 21 Home Run Derby, representing Canada in the nationality-themed contest; he was eliminated in the first round after hitting no home runs. Bay finished the season with a .306 average, 32 home runs, and 101 RBI, leading the Pirates in every major hitting category.

After the 2005 season, Bay signed a four-year contract extension worth a guaranteed $18.25 million.^[1]

Bay batted .321 with 12 home runs (a Pirate record for home runs in a month) and 35 RBIs in May 2006. From May 22 to May 28, he hit home runs in six consecutive games, two short of the major league record held by Dale Long, Don Mattingly, and Ken Griffey, Jr. He had actually hit 10 home runs in ten games, but he had failed to hit a home run in one of the games, and hit two the next day.

Following an aggressive public relations campaign by the Pirates in 2006, Bay led all National League outfielders in All-Star voting. Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder even urged fans to vote for Bay during a summer concert at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena.^[2] Bay became the first member of the Pittsburgh Pirates voted into the All-Star game as a starter since Andy Van Slyke. In the game, Bay went 1 for 3, with a single.

2007–2008[link]

After battling injuries, Bay's 2007 season was less productive. Despite having a strong first couple of months, he batted .247 with 21 home runs and 84 RBIs.^[3]

Bay had a much more productive 2008 with Pittsburgh, batting .282 with 22 home runs and 64 runs batted in through the All-Star break. In a May series against the Chicago Cubs, Bay had extra-inning walk-off hits in back-to-back games; the first two walk-off hits of his career.^[4] A month later, he got his third walk-off hit of the season and his career with a 13th-inning solo home run against the Tampa Bay Rays.^[5]

Boston Red Sox (2008–2009)[link]

On July 31, 2008, Bay and a player to be named later (Josh Wilson)^[6] were traded to the Boston Red Sox in a three team deal that sent Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Andy LaRoche with Bryan Morris to the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Dodgers and Brandon Moss with Craig Hansen to the Pirates from the Red Sox.^[7] In his Red Sox debut, Bay scored both runs, the second coming after he hit a triple in bottom of the 12th inning and scored the game winning run on a Jed Lowrie RBI infield single. Bay hit his first home run with Boston the next night against the Oakland Athletics. In one game, he hit multiple home runs against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park. He would end the 2008 season with Boston batting .293 with 9 home runs and 37 RBIs.

The Red Sox' 2008 American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim was the first playoff series of Bay's career. Bay hit a home run in each of the first two games of the series. Bay finished the series batting 7 for 17 (.412), with 2 doubles, 2 home runs, and 5 RBIs. In the 2008 American League Championship Series, he scored the first run in game one. In game two, he opened the door for the Red Sox with a two-run double and a home run in the fifth inning. However, the Red Sox lost in seven games.

2009[link]

After a strong first half that included an All-Star selection, Bay went on to lead the Red Sox with a career-high 36 home runs and 119 RBIs during the regular season. Early in the season, he also had a streak of 11 home runs with men on base, tying the team record and falling one shy of the major league record.

In 2009, he was named #41 on the Sporting News' list of the 50 greatest current players in baseball.^[8]

He filed for free agency after the season, turning down the Red Sox's offer of salary arbitration.^[9]

New York Mets (2010-present)[link]

On December 29, 2009, Bay agreed to a four-year, $66 million contract with the New York Mets, which also includes a vesting option for a fifth year.^[10][11] General manager Omar Minaya, who engineered the deal, originally traded Bay to the Mets in 2002 when he was GM for the Montreal Expos. On January 5, 2010, Minaya and Jeff Wilpon held a press conference at Citi Field in which Jason Bay was presented with his uniform, number 44 for the Mets.

On April 27, in the first game of a double header against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bay hit his first home run as a member of the New York Mets in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Mets a 2–0 lead. The Mets went on to win the first game 4–0 and win the second game 10–5.

In his first season with the Mets, Bay played in only 95 games. He suffered a concussion in a game against the Dodgers, when he ran into a fenced wall and his head jerked back. He finished his season with a .259 batting average, only six home runs (he hit 36 the year before), 47 RBIs, and scored 48 runs.

2011[link]

Bay began 2011 on the disabled list with a rib injury^[12] and returned to the Mets on April 21 in a game against the Houston Astros. On June 28, 2011, Bay hit a grand slam off of Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Schlereth. It was the first grand slam by the Mets since Angel Pagan hit one on August 1, 2009.^[13] On August 8, Bay hit his 200th career home run against the San Diego Padres, becoming the third Canadian MLB player after Larry Walker and Matt Stairs to reach this milestone.^[14]

In his major league career, Bay has demonstrated well-above-average power to all fields. He has also shown good discipline at the plate; in 2005, he ranked in the top ten in the National League in walks, though he also does strike out more often than the average hitter. On the bases, though he is not exceptionally fast, Bay is a very effective base stealer; in 2005, until he was picked off in the last week of the season, he tied the major league record for most steals in a season without getting caught, with 21 consecutive stolen bases. The record has since been broken by Chase Utley, with 23 consecutive steals in 2009.

Bay and his wife, Kristen, have two daughters, Addison, who was born on November 19, 2006, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Evelyn, who was born on September 16, 2008, in Boston, Massachusetts. Their son, Garrett David Bay, was born on May 3, 2011 in New York City.^[15]

Bay's sister, Lauren Bay Regula, is a professional softball player who pitched for Canada in the 2004 Olympics, and was on the 2008 Olympic team as well.

Bay remains friends with Edmonton Oilers center Shawn Horcoff, who was also born in Trail. He is close friends with Cleveland Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore, who was also a groomsman at Bay's wedding.

In Bay's opening interview with the Boston media, he stated that his father was a die-hard Red Sox fan who had bought him a Red Sox onesie to wear when he was young. Bay believed it was still in his parents' basement along with his two childhood TV room posters of Red Sox greats Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski.^[16]

On Thursday, July 2, 2009, Bay became a U.S. citizen after a ceremony at Faneuil Hall in Boston.^[17] During the offseason, Bay resides in his wife's hometown of Seattle, Washington, and recently had a house in Larchmont, New York.

Richard Lynn "Sandy" Alderson (born November 22, 1947 in Seattle, Washington) is the general manager of the New York Mets.^[1] He previously served as an executive with the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and the commissioner's office of Major League Baseball.

Life and career[link]

The son of an Air Force pilot, John Lester Alderson, who flew missions during World War II, Korea and Vietnam,^[2] Alderson attended Dartmouth College on a NROTC scholarship and graduated in 1969. ^[3] He was born to mother Gwenny Parry Alderson. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1976.^[4] After law school, he worked for Farella Braun & Martel in San Francisco, California. He has two siblings Kristy and Dave and a wife, Linda Alderson and two kids, Bryn and Cate who both also went to Dartmouth.

Oakland Athletics[link]

Roy Eisenhardt, one of the firm's partners, left to become president of the Oakland Athletics when his father-in-law bought the team. In 1981, Alderson joined Eisenhardt to become the Athletics general counsel and in 1983 was named the team's general manager, a position he held through 1997. Under Alderson, the Athletics' minor league system was rebuilt, which bore fruit later that decade as José Canseco (1986), Mark McGwire (1987), and Walt Weiss (1988) were chosen as American League Rookies of the Year. The Athletics won four division titles, three pennants and the 1989 World Series during Alderson's tenure. In 1995, team owner Walter A. Haas, Jr. died and new owners Stephen Schott and Ken Hofmann ordered Alderson to slash payroll. As a result, Alderson began focusing on sabermetric principles toward obtaining relatively undervalued players.^[5] He was a mentor to his eventual successor, Billy Beane.

Major League Baseball[link]

Alderson left the Athletics to work for Major League Baseball's commissioner’s office, where he was executive vice president for baseball operations between September 1998 and 2005.

San Diego Padres[link]

Alderson was employed as CEO of the San Diego Padres from 2005 to 2009, with the team winning back to back division titles in 2005 and 2006. He lectured at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business.^[6]

In 2010, Alderson had been working as commissioner Bud Selig’s point man to address the issues of the corruption of baseball in the Dominican Republic, the largest supplier of Major League Baseball talent outside the United States.^[7]

New York Mets[link]

Alderson was hired by the New York Mets after the 2010 baseball season to replace Omar Minaya as general manager. He was officially introduced as the general manager of the team on October 29, 2010, signing a four year deal with a club option for 2015.^[8]

Alderson also serves as chairman of Major League Baseball's Playing Rules Committee.

The Cab is an American Alternative band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their debut album, Whisper War, was released on April 29, 2008. They have been called "The Band You Need to Know 2008" by Alternative Press magazine. They were also featured in the '100 Bands You Need To Know in 2010' by the magazine and were one of the three bands featured on the cover page, along with Never Shout Never and Hey Monday. Their second album Symphony Soldier was released on August 23, 2011,^[1] with its first single "Bad" released to iTunes July 11, 2011^[2] and announced by the band on July 18. The Cab funded the entire album by themselves and left their Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance label, self-releasing Symphony Soldier. AbsolutePunk gave an extremely positive review with a rating of 95%, calling the album a "masterpiece."^[3] The pre-orders featured eleven packages, ranging from $10 to $9,999 and are now available as packages on the band's webstore.^[4][5] Symphony Soldier is digitally available on iTunes,^[6] and only available as physical CDs from the band's webstore.

Biography[link]

Band members Alexander DeLeon and Cash Colligan first began playing music together at Liberty High School (Henderson, Nevada) and recorded demos as a duo which they put up on their MySpace page.^[7] At this time, future guitarist Ian Crawford went to school in Auburn, WA and started out playing his guitar in talent shows and getting them put on YouTube. DeLeon asked drummer Alex Johnson, who was playing in a local hardcore band, to join The Cab. In late 2005, it became a full band with guitarist Paul Garcia, guitar/pianist Alex Marshall, and drummer Alex Johnson, playing its first show at The Alley in Las Vegas. The band signed to local label Olympus Records in January 2006^[8] but released no material. After giving a demo to Spencer Smith and Jon Walker of Panic! at the Disco at a Cobra Starship/Boys Like Girls/Cartel show,^{[citation needed]} Smith helped them sign to Decaydance Records in May 2007.^[9] Shortly after this, the band's members graduated from high school.^[10] During this time they decided to replace Garcia with Ian Crawford, who moved from Washington to join the band.^[11] In August 2011, The Cab gained a new guitarist, Frank Sidoris, and drummer, Dave Briggs.

Blender named them #420 on their Top 100 Hot Report in September 2007, before they released any official material.^[12] The group has toured with Panic! at the Disco, We the Kings, Metro Station, Cobra Starship, There For Tomorrow, Charlotte Sometimes, Forever the Sickest Kids, Dashboard Confessional, Plain White Tees, The Hush Sound, and others. In February 2008, their touring van turned over in Wisconsin, but none of the members were seriously injured, and they only missed one tour date.^[13] In March 2008, the band played SXSW.^[14]

Their Matt Squire-produced first album, Whisper War, was released on April 29, 2008, featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy on "One of Those Nights," co-written by Stump and the first single from the CD.^[15][16][17] The video for "One of Those Nights" features members of both Panic! at the Disco and Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy. By February 15, 2008, the featured song from the album, "I'll Run", received over 300,000 hits on the band's MySpace page.^[18] On October 30, their third single, "Bounce", was revealed in a new music video on the Fueled by Ramen page on YouTube. This song peaked at #69 on the defunct US Billboard Pop 100 chart.^[19]

On May 7, 2008, Whisper War debuted on the US Billboard 200 at #108,^[20] placing it at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart for new and developing artists.^[21]

The Cab began the Dance Across the Country Tour with The Hush Sound, Steel Train and The Morning Light on July 7 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The "Why So Serious? Tour" began in September with support from This Providence, Hey Monday and A Rocket to the Moon. In October, they also joined Panic! at the Disco, Dashboard Confessional, and the Plain White T's on the Rock Band Live tour.

Their songs "Bounce" and "One of Those Nights" are featured as downloadable tracks in Rock Band 2, although "One of Those Nights" is an alternate version than that of the one on "Whisper War".

The Cab has appeared on Punk Goes Pop 2, covering Rihanna's "Disturbia". In February and March 2009 the band toured with We the Kings, There for Tomorrow and Versaemerge on the "Secret Valentine Tour". On May 1, 2009, the band performed an entire set dedicated to Queen.^[22]

After a short break, they toured with We the Kings, Forever the Sickest Kids, Nevershoutnever! and Mercy Mercedes on the "Bamboozle Road Show Tour". Shortly after, the band announced their first national headlining tour, called the "What Happens In Vegas..." tour, with the support of The Secret Handshake, A Rocket to the Moon, Eye Alaska, Anarbor, The Summer Set, and My Favorite Highway. The tour began on June 18 and ended on August 9.

On June 1, 2009 lead singer Alex DeLeon announced on his blog^[23] that guitarist Ian Crawford had decided to leave the band. Although DeLeon did say that Crawford had decided to leave due to creative differences, there seemed to be no animosity between him and the band. For their upcoming "What Happens in Vegas..." tour, The Cab announced that their friend Bryan Dawson would be replacing Ian Crawford, who is now the touring guitarist of Panic! at the Disco.

On August 19, 2009, bassist Cash Colligan announced that he would also be leaving the band.^[24] The news of Colligan's split first appeared on The Cab's official MySpace blog. Colligan's departure, like Crawford's, seemed to be amicable as the band wrote, "We wish him the best and I'm sure he'll be no stranger at a Cab show or anytime we're back in town." The same day Colligan posted his own explanation for leaving the band on his official MySpace blog. He wrote, "I'm proud as a founding member of this band to say the things I've done, the people I've met and the friends I've made. After five years it's time for me to take a mental nap. Being home I can collect my thoughts and move forward." Colligan went on to say that he would be settling down in Las Vegas and that now is just not the right time for him to be touring on the road.

In a blog Deleon posted after Cash decided to leave the band he said, "Thank you again to everyone for your unending support, you've made the tour and this summer one we'll never forget. We hope to see everybody again soon. We are happier than ever and have so many songs we are dying to show you guys! Get ready... the best is yet to come."

They announced they will be featured in the Alternative Press Tour 2010 and Warped Tour 2010. On January 16, 2010, Alex DeLeon announced via Twitter that "Bryan is going to be a father!". Bryan later confirmed, and confirmed his leave from the band, saying via his own Twitter that he "wanted to thank everyone for the support and love in this crazy time. Love you all now watch out the guys are gonna do great things, promise." A day later, Alex DeLeon announced that The Cab are looking for a new guitar player: "Anyone know any guitar players? serious submissions only. Here is your chance. We need someone who can really play. Big shoes to fill." They were recently featured on "The Real World".

The Cab was on the "Ap Tour" in March–May 2010. They played songs off Whisper War and are also performed a song, "Locked Up", from their new album.

On March 5, Alex DeLeon posted on his Twitter account "singing on the las vegas house of blues stage tonight. it's been too long. been craving the lights. can anyone guess with who?" Later that night he appeared on stage with former Cab bassist Cash Colligan's new band Play For Keeps. DeLeon sang guest vocals on the Play for Keeps song "Just Like the Movies" live, where normally Travis Clark from We the Kings sings on the recording.

On June 22, 2011, The Cab announced on their website that they were departing from their label Fueled by Ramen and Decaydance Records before finally releasing their new record, Symphony Soldier. The first single from the record is "Bad," which debuted on Sirius XM Radio.

Symphony Soldier was released on August 23, 2011.^[1] with its first single "Bad" released to iTunes early July and announced by the band on July 18. AbsolutePunk gave an extremely positive review, calling the album a "masterpiece."^[3] The Cab guitarist alumnus Ian Crawford played guitar for the album. It features several guest artists co-writing, including Pete Wentz, Bruno Mars and Adam Levine.

The band toured with Simple Plan, Forever The Sickest Kids, and Mariana's Trench in the fall of 2011.

The band co-headlined the "Everything's Fine Symphony Soldier" tour during January and February 2012 with best friends The Summer Set. Supporting acts were He Is We, Days Difference, and Paradise Fears.
