Sports fans can be an excitable bunch, especially when it comes to claiming a piece of memorabilia. But for one young Socceroos supporter the joy of potentially receiving a jersey from one of her heroes backfired when she finished up empty handed after Australia's World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan. Standing beside the fence after the Socceroos' 3-0 win, the youngster watched as rookie defender James Meredith made his way over to greet relatives, who had travelled from Albury to watch him make his national debut. After embracing a family member, Meredith peeled off his jersey, prompting the girl to jump up and down and scream in joy at the prospect of claiming a prized souvenir. However, the 27-year-old appeared oblivious to her hopes and as she reached out to grab the gold shirt h...

December 4 1985, Olympic Park, Melbourne The return leg in Melbourne was up to this point in Australian soccer history the most important match since the World Cup finals in 1974. Frank Arok had told the Scots to "pack their sunscreen" intending to play in the heat to wilt the Scots. The governing body betrayed the fans by hosting the game in Melbourne, at night and watering the pitch beforehand. The Scots must have thought it was Christmas. Australia needed 2 goals to make a contest and threw everything at the determined Scots. Australia unfortunately failed to find the back of the net and it was Scotland who ended up advancing at the expense of a gallant but cheated Australia. Score: Australia 0:0 Scotland Crowd: 29,500 Australian Line-up: Terry Greedy, Charlie Yankos, Alan Davidson, ...

To celebrate Australia's Bicentennary, the Australian Soccer Federation organised a Gold Cup tournament. They invited two very experienced international sides in Brazil and Argentina and an up and coming side in Saudi Arabia. Played in a round robin format, the top two sides would play-off in the final at the end of the series. Australia's third cup game was against Argentina. The 4-1 win was something special against the high profile, World Champion Argentinians and is often considered one of the best wins by the Socceroos. With this "shock" win Australia qualified for the Gold Cup final against Brazil. The Code joins the Central Coast Mariners as they embark on the most anticipated season of A-League football in its eight year history. Over-shadowed commercially by the high-price purchases of their closest geographical rivals, the Mariners venture headfirst into the season as defending minor-premiers. But their best kept secret - the Yellow Army of supporters and the ‘marquee’ fan base - may be enough to pull the community-centric team through the challenges of the season and emerge at the summit of A-League success. The series begins with an in-depth look at head coach Graham Arnold’s strategy leading into the Round 5 game game against Sydney FC, before looking back at the first two months of the competition, starting with the pre-season and promo day. We look at the Central Coast Mari...
