Paddle Steamer Melbourne cruise Mildura
A cruise on the paddle steamer PS Melbourne from Mildura Australia, and showing the steamer passing through lock 11 on the Murray River. Action includes views of the over 100 year old double expansion steam engine working at close range - and the feeding of the boiler with logs to keep steam up - and the operating of the control levers by the stoker to reverse the engine to stop the boat, and then, to finally stop the engine once in position after arriving in lock 11..

Paddle Steamer "Waverley" departs Southampton for Glasgow 19th Oct 2012
PS Waverley departed Southampton berth 102 outbound for her home port of Glasgow just before 9am this morning. It was interesting to see her being swung round with the aid of a very long rope one end tied to a bollard on dockside and the other end secured from the bow until she was fully turned round to head outwards then when the crew were ready the dockside workers untied the rope from the bollard and Waverley was then able to be on her way. Waverley was in port from 16th Oct till today her last port of call was Whitstable in Kent.

Paddle Steamer "Pevensey"
The PS Pevensey was originally built as a barge in 1910, and was then converted into a paddlesteamer in 1911. She was built in Moama for Permewan Wright and Company, one of the largest ship owners on the river. Powered by a 20 h.p. twin high pressure steam engine, the Pevensey is a large capacity cargo/tow boat and was capable of carrying 120 tons in giant holds. In 1932 she was almost destroyed by fire at Koraleigh Landing below Nyah, but was rebuilt in 1933-35 at Morgan, South Australia. In 1939 she ran a regular cargo run between Morgan and Mildura before becoming redundant and being tied up at Mildura. In 1973 the Echuca City Council purchased her from the Collins brothers and steamed her back to Echuca. In 1975 she was slipped at Moama and completely restored. She now operated from the Port of Echuca and was used in the mini series "All the Rivers Run" playing the PS Philadelphia. The Pevensey had her 100th birthday last year in 2011.

Paddle Boats : Murray River Paddle Steamers : The Alexander Arbuthnot
Some views taken around the Alexander Arbuthnot paddle steamer on the Murray River around Echuca. The boat was buit by the Arbuthnot Sawmill in Koondrook as a barge in 1916. A wood fuelled Ruston & Hornsby10 hp engine was fitted in 1923. It was then used to tow barges to the forest to collect logs for the sawmill until the 1940's. It was then sold to Charcoal producers in Barmah, who used it to bring bagged charcoal to the wharf at Echuca during World War 2. In 1947 after the war had ended the AA was no longer needed and retired, and eventually sank.
In 1972 a group on volunteers from Shepparton raised the AA for use in a theme park. In 1989 the AA was bought by the Echuca City Council, and was restored and re entered service in 1994.

Paddle Steamer PS Waverley on her Kyle of Lochalsh Sailings April 2011.
Here is my footage of the Paddle Steamer PS Waverley on her April sailings from the port of Kyle of Lochalsh.
First we see Waverley leaving the Kyle of Lochalsh and passing under the Skye Bridge on her way to the Isle of Raasay on Wednesday 27th April.
then later in the day we see Waverley going down through the Kylerhea Narrows and in to the Sound of Sleat, this footage was filmed from the Kylerhea car ferry.
The final shot was of Waverley returning from its cruise round the Isle of Raasay on Friday 29th April passing under the Skye Bridge and returning to the Kyle of Lochalsh.
Hope you enjoy and a special thanks to the captain of the Kylerhea Ferry for following the Waverley for me.

My model of the American Civil War blockade runner Presto. Built in 1863 near Glasgow, Scotland she made just a few runs before being destroyed near the entrance to Charleston, South Carolina in February 1864. Her builders claimed that she went over 20 knots on her trials.

Paddle Steamer "Canberra"
The PS Canberra was built in 1912 at Goolwa, South Australia as a single deck fishing steamer, and then used for a short while as a light cargo boat. In the 1940's the Canberra received an upper promenade deck and was fitted out as an excursion boat, where she was operated by the Collins brothers at Mildura. Since 1967 the Canberra has operated out of Echuca and in 2003 she was fully restored and fitted with a 1923 Wood Fired Marshall Compound Steam Engine.
