Bagmati - Rio 2012.wmv
The Song Bagmati signifies the misery and the current situation of Bagmati. Like other rivers of the world symbolize certain civilizations, the holy river Bagmati stands for Kathmandu Valley's civilization. However, due to the adverse impact created by unplanned urbanization of the valley inducing slum settlements, dumping of wastes by the bank and polluting the river in the name of worships, have shoved the once beautiful river to a bleak pit. Hence, the river in real does not appear like what a river looks like but like a large open sewage. The song represents Bagmati's pry and delivers a message that the river needs intense treatment through change in attitude of the citizens as it deserves its right to remain sacred. English Translation It seems like you have stopped breathing Come what may, you keep flowing forever You are destined to flow You are crippled yet you are crawling Your story The pain you share with Kathmandu And the dreams that were weaved Upon your existence Fills agony inside me As my breath and my heartbeat Begin to rush when I see your withered form I look at your patience And my heart cries out for you Why do you still wash away all these sins? You have been detested, abandoned and jeered Oh my polluted Bagmati.... Why should you suffer? You used to be a sacred river Oh Holy Bagmati! Can we change our attitude To save her, the air and this earth For ever till eternity? Oh Holy Bagmati!

Pashupatinath Temple and Bagmati the Holy River
Pashupati is one of the four most important religious sites in Asia for Shiva devotees. The Pashupatinath Temple is the largest Hindu temple and is considered to be the holiest of all Hindu Temples. This is a two-tiered golden temple with four silver doorways, hundreds of Shiva linga's shrines and holy symbols. It is located on the holy river Bagmati, 6 km east of Kathmandu . Non- Hindus are not allowed into this temple. It is believed that this temple was built long before the Christian era begin. The Pashupati Temple was built in the fifth century and later renovated by Malla kings, Its original beauty still remains with the beautifully sculpted stone sculptures found here. Thousands of Hindus come each year on Shivaratri. The Bagmati River is a river of Nepal and India. It flows through the Kathmandu valley and is the river separating Kathmandu from Lalitpur. It is considered a holy river both by Hindus and Buddhists. A number of Hindu temples are located on the banks of this river. The importance of Bagmati also lies in the fact that Hindus are cremated on the banks of this holy river, and Kirants are buried in the hills by its side. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the dead body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati river before cremation. The chief mourner (usually the first son) who lights the funeral pyre must take a holy river-water bath immediately after cremation. Many relatives who join the funeral procession also take a bath in the Bagmati ...

Cremation at Bagmati, Nepal Explanation of Ceremony
This video was taken during the summer of 2006 near the Bagmati River just outside of Katmandu, Nepal. Taken from Wikipedia: The importance of Bagmati also lies in the fact that Hindus are cremated on the banks of this holy river, and Kirants are buried in the hills by its side. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the dead body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati river before cremation. The chief mourner (usually the first son) who lights the funeral pyre must take a holy river-water bath immediately after cremation. Many relatives who join the funeral procession also take bath in the Bagmati River or sprinkle the holy water on their bodies at the end of cremation. The Bagmati River is thus considered to purify the people spiritually and physically.

River for Peace, Bagmati River Nepal
An estimated 10000 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and started dredging debris from the Bagmati River on Thursday 30 September, bringing the Rivers of Peace campaign to Nepal. The Bagmati runs through the Kathmandu Valley and is one of Nepal's holy rivers. But someone bathing in it these days is more likely to catch something nasty than to be spiritually purified. The clean-up is part of the Global Peace Festival South Asia 2010 being held in Nepal from September 30 to October 2. The launch sets in motion an ongoing environmental project to improve the river and its surroundings.

Janakpur Railway Nepal
Janakpur Railway Line. 25 kms from Janakpur in the south of Nepal, to the Indian Border. This railwayline is a kind of ,lifeline' for the people who live in this part of Nepal, (The Terai Area). Because of a lack of bridges and roads people often bend their bikes on the train. Sitting upon the roof is a great experience. But also very dangerous. Many people died. In 1981 a train felt down in the holy Bagmati-river. It is said that 3000 people died.

Cremation along the Bagmati, Nepal
Upon return to Nepal in 2004, I captured these Hindu cremation ceremonies at Pashupatinath, Nepal along the banks of the holy Bagmati River in Kathmandu Valley. The Pashupatinath temple nearby is Nepal's most significant and among the most important Shiva temples for Hindus.

Pashupatinath and the Holy River Bagmati
Many relatives who join the funeral procession also take a bath in the Bagmati River or sprinkle the holy water on their bodies at the end of cremation. The Bagmati River is considered to purify the people spiritually. The best place to watch Pashupati is from the hill opposite Aryaghat. One can see the temple, the activities on the ghat, and the Panchaderal complex. Many trees on this hill are not indigenous, but have been imported from as far away as Argentina. Pines and monkey puzzle trees help make the area attractive. A short climb from here takes one to the courtyards of Viswarupa, Gorakhnath, Tribhuwan Parameswar, and old shrine of Kirateswar, a shrine of Gauri, and the Kailas area where many Shava lingas, some of them more than 1400 years old, are scattered. From Kailas there are steps descending ...
