The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. Ranging from quintet to septet, the band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, rock, improvisational jazz, psychedelia, space rock, for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams, and for their devoted fan base, known as "Deadheads". "Their music," writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists." These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world". The band was ranked 57th in the issue The Greatest Artists of all Time by Rolling Stone magazine. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and their Barton Hall Concert at Cornell University (May 8, 1977) was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. The Grateful Dead have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide.

-Jack Straw is a rock song written by Bob Weir and Robert Hunter in the Troubadour tradition. The track appeared on the Grateful Dead album, Europe '72, and was frequently performed live by the band. -The song was first performed in concert on October 19, 1971 in Minneapolis, MN. -Over the years, the vocals shifted between Weir and Jerry Garcia though in the songs earliest performances (circa 1971-72), Weir sang all of the vocals. The song also became much faster in tempo over the years, less concentrated on vocal harmony and more of a high-energy rock jam. -The Grateful Dead tribute album Deadicated contains a cover of Jack Straw recorded by Bruce Hornsby and the Range.

The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, improvisational jazz, psychedelia, and space rock, and for live performances of long musical improvisation. » Subscribe: http://bit.ly/2fxVDNN » The Grateful Dead’s May 8, 1977 performance at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York is just one of many powerful shows the band laid down that spring. Yet, when a high-quality recording of the show surfaced in 1985 and was spread quickly amongst fans, it rose to towards the top of the list of the most famous shows in Grateful Dead history. Today, 39 years to the day later, and after hundreds of crispy recordings of Dead shows have circulated, it still remains a fan-favorite. The late Dick Latvala, the Grateful Dead’s first official archivist, was a huge fan of Cornell ’77. As noted by Nicolas Meriwether of the Grateful Dead archive, Latvala wrote this in his journal just based off an audience recording, “After a few heari...

PBS NewsHour Chief Arts and Culture Correspondent Jeffrey Brown talks with founding member of the Grateful Dead Bill Kreutzmann about first meeting Jerry Garcia and deciding to follow him for the rest of his life. They discuss candidly how drugs and money took their toll on the band. Kreutzmann explains how their fans, known as Deadheads, were as central to the band’s success as the music. Although the Grateful Dead played their final concerts this weekend at Soldier Field in Chicago, Kreutzmann says he wishes they could keep playing.

An interview with Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia for the mini-series "The History of Rock 'N' Rolll". I believe this was from Volume 6. This is the unedited interview. A brief tour of the GD Vault with Dick Latvala is an added bonus at the end of the interview.
Jerry Garcia tells a funny story about inadvertently consuming a large dose of acid before a concert at the Fillmore in the late 1960s. Editor's note: the date of the concert Jerry is talking about is (most likely) 11/7-8/1969, or 12/19-21/1969.

More than two decades after Jerry Garcia's death, a reshuffled version of the fabled group has started rocking out across the nation, featuring some familiar faces. Anthony Mason has been watching Dead & Company come to life.
The Grateful Dead are celebrating their 50th anniversary and returned to their roots for a pair of hometown Bay Area shows in Santa Clara, California. Rolling Stone visited the parking lot to survey the scene. Get the full story at: http://rol.st/1T8bUm8 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/1uGwgGg
Branford Marsalis on Jerry Garcia & Grateful Dead - Lost Interview from 1996
This is the COMPLETE (15 min) and 1st appearance of Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir on the David Letterman Show, April 13th 1982. It was on April 13th 1982, during the Grateful Dead's Spring Tour, on a night-off between shows at Nassau and Glens Falls, NY. The introduction is funny with Letterman teaching Jerry how to play "Proud Marry" on acoustic guitar... Afterwards, Jerry and Bobby revealed terrific humor in describing SF in the "early years", the GD community, "Dead Heads" et al... Hilarious and classic stuff. In the middle, they perform two acoustic songs : 5:55 "Deep Elem Blues" and then, after a break ... 12:39 "Monkey & The Engineer" PS : Bobby seemed to have a terrible "cold" ...
The singer talks to correspondent Anthony Mason about the timelessness of the Grateful Dead's music, and why he wanted to perform with the band's surviving members as part of a new touring ensemble, Dead & Company. (Don't miss Mason's story on the band on "Sunday Morning" June 12.)
This project was done with humor, truth, and sarcasm. At the University of California, Santa Cruz, UCSC, where I went to college, there were many fans of The Grateful Dead. They called themselves Deadheads. I had not heard of the band before attending the school. I listened to the music, and I didn't understand why people felt so passionately about the band. I was intrigued. So in 1986, I decided to try and understand these people and the music they loved, and to create a video of my quest. This documentary project is the result. Enjoy.
On July 7, 2012, Donna Jean Godchaux of the Grateful Dead spoke at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of the Museum's Hall of Fame Series. In this interview clip, Godchaux discusses landing in San Francisco, meeting her husband Keith Godchaux, meeting with Jerry Garcia and joining the Grateful Dead. The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, improvisational jazz, psychedelia, and space rock, and for live performances of long musical improvisation. "Their music," writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists." These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world." They were ranked 57th in the issue The Greatest Artists of all T...

Gone are the days when the ox fall down
Take up the yoke and plow the fields around
Gone are the days when the ladies said
"Please gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me"
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on
1929 when he stepped to the bar
Drank to the dregs of the whiskey jar
1930 when the wall caved in
He made his way selling red-eyed gin
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on
Delilah Jones was the mother of twins
Two times over and the rest were sins
Raised eight boys, only I turned bad
Didn't get the lickin's that the other ones had
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on
Tumble down shack on Big Foot County
Snowed so hard that the roof caved in
Delilah Jones went to meet her God
And the old man never was the same again
Daddy made whiskey and he made it well
Cost two dollars and it burned like hell
I cut hick'ry just to fire the still
Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on
Gone are the days when the ox fall down
Take up the yoke and plow the fields around
Gone are the days when the ladies said
"Please gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me"
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on
