Surjit Singh (Rajesh Khanna) earns a living driving a truck. He is a rash driver and more than usually also driving while drunk. One night he stops at the prostitute Chamelibai's (Bindu), spends the night with her, and gets up late the next morning. He rushes out and drives at breakneck speed in thick fog to make up for lost time while again drinking. He inevitably ends up running over and killing a farmer named Ram Din. But despite the opportunity to hit and run, he decides to stay and face the consequences. He is arrested by the police, charged, and brought before the courts.
Surjit acknowledges his guilt to the Judge (Rehman) who in-turn knows that he should send Surjit to prison for two years. But moved by the plight of Ram Din's family (which include his widow Malti (Meena Kumari); his sister Kamla (Kumari Naaz); two young sons; a crippled father Ganga Din (Nana Palsikar), and his blind mother (Leela Mishra)), and his inherent belief that imprisonment does not serve the good of the victim or the perpetrator, the Judge resolves to try a novel experiment of forcing Surjit to live with Ram Din's family and looking after their financial needs. A horrified Surjit attempts in vain to convince the Judge to change his ruling. He is transported to his new "prison" under police protection, where he is met by hostile villagers. Ram Din's family detest his presence, and call him "Dushman" (The enemy). Surjit attempts to escape on the first night, but is apprehended and brought back to serve his time.
He gradually comes to terms with the twist of fate that has forced him to become a subsistence farmer and live under the ever unforgiving eyes of Ram Din's family. Over time he starts sincerely working for the family and its interests. He meets Phoolmati Mumtaz, a happy-go-lucky girl who operates a small bi-scope machine to entertain the village kids. They take an instant liking to each other, which blossoms into love. He also finds friends amongst the previously hostile villagers. He works hard on the family plot while also protecting it from the clutches of a local landlord who has ill intentioned designs on the land and also on Kamla.
Surmounting many obstacles, Surjit is able to arrange the marriage of Kamla with her childhood sweetheart. With the help of a benevolent police force and the Judge, he is also able to thwart the many attempts of the landlord to seize the family's land, and that of other villagers who have mortgaged their land with the same landlord. Malti however, is unable to forgive Surjit for having killed her husband.
Things take a dramatic turn for the worse when Surjit is framed and arrested for the accidental death of Phoolmati's drunk grandfather. At the same time, the landlord has the lush harvest produced by Surjit and other villagers covertly set ablaze, and has Phoolmati kidnapped, primarily to punish Surjit. Malti, who has been working in one of the landlord's saw mills thinking he is an honourable man, witnesses his misdeeds, and finally realises her mistake. She is able to rescue Phoolmati but gets trapped by the landlord instead, who attempts to her. Meanwhile Surjit stages an escape from his holding cell and with the help of Phoolmati, is able to come to Malti's rescue in the nick of time. He confronts the landlord and violently assaults him as payback. The police show up and arrest the landlord for his role in defrauding the villagers and destroying their harvest.
Ram Din's family finally accept Surjit as one of their own, and arrange his marriage to Phoolmati. In a final twist though, his two years' imprisonment is complete, and the Police arrive to escort him back to town. He pleads with the Judge to let him serve a life sentence, and the Judge smiles, vindicated that his experiment has been successfu

Rajesh Khanna born: Jatin Khanna 29 December 1942 -- 18 July 2012, Amritsar, Punjab, India)) is an Indian Bollywood . He married Dimple Kapadia, a Gujarati, in 1973 and has two daughters from the marriage. Khanna and Dimple Kapadia separated in 1984, as his schedule kept him away much of the time and she became interested in pursuing an acting career.
After the separation, he was romantically involved with Tina Munim for a period of time. Following a few years of separation, the relationship between Kapadia and Khanna blossomed once again, and remained that of close friends. He made his film debut in the 1966 film Aakhri khat, followed by Raaz opposite heroine Babita, but neither was a major success. He was noticed for his performance in his next film Baharon Ke Sapne which was followed by box office successes like Aurat (1967), Khamoshi, and Aradhana (1969). Established as a popular protagonist, he appeared in many romantic, melodramatic and social films, often appearing with the same actresses - such as Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Hema Malini and Asha Parekh.
During the peak of his career he would be mobbed during public appearances. Fans kissed his car, which would be covered with lipstick marks, and lined the road, cheering and chanting his name. Female fans sent him letters written in their own blood.
Several songs sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1970s were based on Rajesh Khanna.during the filming of the song 'mere sapnon ki rani' aradhana sharmila tagore was shooting for a satya jit rai film and the director shakti samanta had to shoot their scenes separately and then join the scenes together. needless to say this was the the most popular song of its generation and went on to become the biggest attraction of the movie aradhana.
Rajesh Khanna had 15 consecutive hits between 1969 to 1972, which is still an unbreakable record in Indian film. His success began to diminish in terms of box office results of his films in the mid 1970s (1976-78) to some extent owing to various factors, including internal politics against him in film industry, his sudden marriage with Dimple Kapadia, emergence of action oriented masala films and young generation heros like Rishi Kapoor, the introduction of video (VCR) in India and its resulting decrease in number of family audiences at Cinema halls.Post-1976,
Khanna had a string of box office flops, including Aaina and Mehbooba. Media reports in the late seventies suggested that success had perhaps caused Khanna to be complacent, often turning up late for shoots and throwing tantrums, as well as having a whole entourage of sycophants accompany him for his shoots. This behaviour coupled with the changing trend from romantic and social movies to action oriented multi-star films in the late-1970s and early-1980s caused the decline of Khanna's career in terms of box office ratings to some extent. However, he continued basically in solo hero social sober household meaningful films during multistar masala films' era.
Khanna met with more success in challenging roles with critically acclaimed box office hits such as ,Amardeep,Thodi Si Bewafai, Dard, 'Dhanwaan' 'Avtaar' 'Agar Tum Na Hote, Souten,Red Rose etc. (1979 onwards to end of 80s). He also performed in few multistar films with central characters such as Kudrat, Rajpoot, Dharam Aur Kanoon, and Ashanti. He shared a very close relationship with R.D.Burman and Kishore Kumar. The trio were very close friends and have worked together in more than thirty films. Several actors who were part of the cast of most of his films included Sujith Kumar, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Asrani, Bindu, Vijay Arora and A K Hangal, who remained part of his "team" until the late eighties.
From the early nineties onwards he stopped acting and served as M.P. of New Delhi Constituency from 1991 to 1996. During that period, he returned to acting, appearing in Khudai (1994). He made a come back as a NRI in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (2002). In September 2007, he officially announced his planned return to the big screen, signing a contract for several new films, including some TV serials. His successful TV serial Raghukul Reet Sada Chali Aayi began in November 2008 and ended in September 2009. Presently he has been offered a huge amount (Rs.3.00 Crore) to enter in Big Boss 3 season in Colour Channel due to heavy demand in term of TRP.
He died on 18 July 2012, at his bungalow in Mumbai due to cancer

Mumtaz (born 31 July 1947 in Bombay, India) is a famous Bollywood actress, most remembered for her roles in Tere Mere Sapne (1971) and Khilona (1970), which got her Filmfare Best Actress Award, while the film itself, won Filmfare Best Movie Award.
Mumtaz entered Bollywood at the age of twelve.She started as an extra in films in the early 1960s. She accepted small roles in big films like Mujhe Jeene Do and big roles in small budgeted stunt films like Boxer, Samson, Tarzan, and King Kong. In the 1960s, she starred in as many as 16 action films with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh and was labelled as a stunt film heroine.
She first gained attention in a supporting role as a vamp in the A grade color hit film Mere Sanam (1965). The memorable sexy song "yeh hai reshmai "was picturized on her. The success of the film led to another sizzling song "Aye dushman jaan" in another big-budget film Patthar Ke Sanam. Finally, she gained major attention when she played one of Dilip Kumar's leading ladies in Ram Aur Shyam (1967). The film became one of the top hits of the year, and she received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress.
Suddenly, Mumtaz was flooded with offers, but still not for major leading lady roles. She supported Sharmila Tagore in several films in the late 1960s, such as for Saawan Ki Ghata, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, and Mere Humdum Mere Dost. She had a memorable song and dance number ("Aaj kal tere mere") with her then-boyfriend Shammi Kapoor in the hit film Brahmachari (1968).
It took Raj Khosla's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969) starring the phenomenon Rajesh Khanna to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Oddly, it was just an inconsequential girlfriend role, but director Khosla, so good at picturizing songs, filmed four unforgettable songs on Mumtaz. The film made her hugely popular, and she acknowledged that even though she had a small role, it was still one of her favorite films.
When earlier, she had played a small role as Rajendra Kumar's sister in Gehra Daag, now was elevated to playing his leading lady in Tangewala. Earlier, Shashi Kapoor had refused to work with her because she was a "stunt film heroine" in Saccha Jootha, now wanted her to be his heroine in Chor Machaye Shor.
Mumtaz had no problems acting sexy and due to her great looks, easily had several more hit films. She acted in over a hundred films in a career that spanned just 12 years. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for one of her favorite films Khilona in 1970, and she was "very happy that the audience accepted her in an emotional role." Mumtaz starred in many movies with Feroz Khan and her other popular pairing have been with Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna.
She has also acted with Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and other top heroes of her era. She was proud of her work in her other favorite films Tere Mere Sapne for director Vijay Anand, as well as Roop Tera Mastana, Aap Ki Kasam, and Aaina.
She quit acting after her appearance in Aaina (1977) which was a flop, even though it had co-starred Rajesh Khanna and was directed by famous director Kailasam Balachander. After that, she left films for marriage to a millionaire and only returned for one final film appearance 12 years later in the 1989 film Aandhiyan, which flopped and she turned down other film offers. In 1996 she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mumtaz married millionaire Mayur Madhvani on 29 May 1974. They have two daughters Natasha and Tanya. Natasha, the elder daughter, married actor Fardeen Khan, son of Feroz Khan, in a lavish ceremony, in December 2005. Her sister Mallika is married to Randhawa, younger brother of famous wrestler Dara Singh.
Mumtaz had acknowledged that she has successfully battled cancer and that she and her husband have overcome personal problems in their marriage.
When asked which performances she is most proud of: "I was okay, nothing great at all. I liked Khilona that fetched me the Filmfare Best Actress Award. I also liked myself in Roop Tera Mastana, Aaina and Tere Mere Sapne. I should have won the Best Actress Award for Tere Mere Sapne. I really deserved it. Instead it went to Asha Parekh for Kati Patang in which she wore white and stood in front of piano doing precious little. Khair, jaane do (let it go). God has given me so much.

A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. Surjit acknowledges his guilt to the Judge (Rehman) who in-turn knows that he should send Surjit to prison for two years. But moved by the plight of Ram Din's family (which include his widow Malti (Meena Kumari); his sister Kamla (Kumari Naaz); two young sons; a crippled father Ganga Din (Nana Palsikar), and his blind mother (Leela Mishra)), and his inherent belief that imprisonment does not serve the good of the victim or the perpetrator, the Judge resolves to try a novel experiment of forcing Surjit to live with Ram Din's family and looking after their financial needs. A horrified Surjit attempts in vain to convince the Judge to change his ruling. He is transported to his new "prison" under police protection, where he is met by hostile villagers. Ram Din's family detest his presence, and call him "Dushman" (The enemy). Surjit attempts to escape on the first night, but is apprehended and brought back to serve his time. He gradually comes to terms with the twist of fate that has forced him to become a subsistence farmer and live under the ever unforgiving eyes of Ram Din's family. Over time he starts sincerely working for the family and its interests. He meets Phoolmati Mumtaz, a happy-go-lucky girl who operates a small bi-scope machine to entertain the village kids. They take an instant liking to each other, which blossoms into love. He also finds friends amongst the previously hostile villagers. He works hard on the family plot while also protecting it from the clutches of a local landlord who has ill intentioned designs on the land and also on Kamla. Surmounting many obstacles, Surjit is able to arrange the marriage of Kamla with her childhood sweetheart. With the help of a benevolent police force and the Judge, he is also able to thwart the many attempts of the landlord to seize the family's land, and that of other villagers who have mortgaged their land with the same landlord. Malti however, is unable to forgive Surjit for having killed her husband. Things take a dramatic turn for the worse when Surjit is framed and arrested for the accidental death of Phoolmati's drunk grandfather. At the same time, the landlord has the lush harvest produced by Surjit and other villagers covertly set ablaze, and has Phoolmati kidnapped, primarily to punish Surjit. Malti, who has been working in one of the landlord's saw mills thinking he is an honourable man, witnesses his misdeeds, and finally realises her mistake. She is able to rescue Phoolmati but gets trapped by the landlord instead, who attempts to her. Meanwhile Surjit stages an escape from his holding cell and with the help of Phoolmati, is able to come to Malti's rescue in the nick of time. He confronts the landlord and violently assaults him as payback. The police show up and arrest the landlord for his role in defrauding the villagers and destroying their harvest. Ram Din's family finally accept Surjit as one of their own, and arrange his marriage to Phoolmati. In a final twist though, his two years' imprisonment is complete, and the Police arrive to escort him back to town. Rajesh Khanna had 15 consecutive hits between 1969 to 1972, which is still an unbreakable record in Indian film. His success began to diminish in terms of box office results of his films in the mid 1970s (1976-78) to some extent owing to various factors, including internal politics against him in film industry, his sudden marriage with Dimple Kapadia, emergence of action oriented masala films and young generation heros like Rishi Kapoor, the introduction of video (VCR) in India and its resulting decrease in number of family audiences at Cinema halls.Post-1976, Khanna had a string of box office flops, including Aaina and Mehbooba. Media reports in the late seventies suggested that success had perhaps caused Khanna to be complacent, often turning up late for shoots and throwing tantrums, as well as having a whole entourage of sycophants accompany him for his shoots. This behaviour coupled with the changing trend from romantic and social movies to action oriented multi-star films in the late-1970s and early-1980s caused the decline of Khanna's career in terms of box office ratings to some extent. However, he continued basically in solo hero social sober household meaningful films during multistar masala films' era. From the early nineties onwards he stopped acting and served as M.P. of New Delhi Constituency from 1991 to 1996. During that period, he returned to acting, appearing in Khudai (1994). In September 2007, he officially announced his planned return to the big screen, signing a contract for several new films, including some TV serials. Mumtaz entered Bollywood at the age of twelve.She started as an extra in films in the early 1960s. She accepted small roles in big films like Mujhe Jeene Do and big roles in small budgeted stunt films like Boxer, Samson, Tarzan, and King Kong. In the 1960s, she starred in as many as 16 action films with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh and was labelled as a stunt film heroine. She first gained attention in a supporting role as a vamp in the A grade color hit film Mere Sanam (1965). The memorable sexy song "yeh hai reshmai "was picturized on her. The success of the film led to another sizzling song "Aye dushman jaan" in another big-budget film Patthar Ke Sanam. Finally, she gained major attention when she played one of Dilip Kumar's leading ladies in Ram Aur Shyam (1967). The film became one of the top hits of the year, and she received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress. Suddenly, Mumtaz was flooded with offers, but still not for major leading lady roles. She supported Sharmila Tagore in several films in the late 1960s, such as for Saawan Ki Ghata, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, and Mere Humdum Mere Dost. She had a memorable song and dance number ("Aaj kal tere mere") with her then-boyfriend Shammi Kapoor in the hit film Brahmachari (1968). It took Raj Khosla's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969) starring the phenomenon Rajesh Khanna to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Oddly, it was just an inconsequential girlfriend role, but director Khosla, so good at picturizing songs, filmed four unforgettable songs on Mumtaz. Mumtaz had no problems acting sexy and due to her great looks, easily had several more hit films. She acted in over a hundred films in a career that spanned just 12 years. Mumtaz starred in many movies with Feroz Khan and her other popular pairing have been with Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna. She has also acted with Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and other top heroes of her era. She was proud of her work in her other favorite films Tere Mere Sapne for director Vijay Anand, as well as Roop Tera Mastana, Aap Ki Kasam, and Aaina. In 1996 she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. Mumtaz married millionaire Mayur Madhvani on 29 May 1974. They have two daughters Natasha and Tanya. Natasha, the elder daughter, married actor Fardeen Khan, son of Feroz Khan, in a lavish ceremony, in December 2005. Her sister Mallika is married to Randhawa, younger brother of famous wrestler Dara Singh. Mumtaz had acknowledged that she has successfully battled cancer and that she and her husband have overcome personal problems in their marriage. When asked which performances she is most proud of: "I was okay, nothing great at all. I liked Khilona that fetched me the Filmfare Best Actress Award. I also liked myself in Roop Tera Mastana, Aaina and Tere Mere Sapne. I should have won the Best Actress Award for Tere Mere Sapne. I really deserved it. He rushes out and drives at breakneck speed in thick fog to make up for lost time while again drinking. He inevitably ends up running over and killing a farmer named Ram Din. Surjit acknowledges his guilt to the Judge (Rehman) who in-turn knows that he should send Surjit to prison for two years. But moved by the plight of Ram Din's family (which include his widow Malti (Meena Kumari); his sister Kamla (Kumari Naaz); two young sons; a crippled father Ganga Din (Nana Palsikar), and his blind mother (Leela Mishra)), and his inherent belief that imprisonment does not serve the good of the victim or the perpetrator, the Judge resolves to try a novel experiment of forcing Surjit to live with Ram Din's family and looking after their financial needs. A horrified Surjit attempts in vain to convince the Judge to change his ruling. He is transported to his new "prison" under police protection, where he is met by hostile villagers. Ram Din's family detest his presence, and call him "Dushman" (The enemy). Surjit attempts to escape on the first night, but is apprehended and brought back to serve his time.
He gradually comes to terms with the twist of fate that has forced him to become a subsistence farmer and live under the ever unforgiving eyes of Ram Din's family. Over time he starts sincerely working for the family and its interests. He meets Phoolmati Mumtaz, a happy-go-lucky girl who operates a small bi-scope machine to entertain the village kids. They take an instant liking to each other, which blossoms into love. He also finds friends amongst the previously hostile villagers. He works hard on the family plot while also protecting it from the clutches of a local landlord who has ill intentioned designs on the land and also on Kamla.
Surmounting many obstacles, Surjit is able to arrange the marriage of Kamla with her childhood sweetheart. With the help of a benevolent police force and the Judge, he is also able to thwart the many attempts of the landlord to seize the family's land, and that of other villagers who have mortgaged their land with the same landlord. Malti however, is unable to forgive Surjit for having killed her husband.
Things take a dramatic turn for the worse when Surjit is framed and arrested for the accidental death of Phoolmati's drunk grandfather. At the same time, the landlord has the lush harvest produced by Surjit and other villagers covertly set ablaze, and has Phoolmati kidnapped, primarily to punish Surjit. Malti, who has been working in one of the landlord's saw mills thinking he is an honourable man, witnesses his misdeeds, and finally realises her mistake. She is able to rescue Phoolmati but gets trapped by the landlord instead, who attempts to her. Meanwhile Surjit stages an escape from his holding cell and with the help of Phoolmati, is able to come to Malti's rescue in the nick of time. He confronts the landlord and violently assaults him as payback. The police show up and arrest the landlord for his role in defrauding the villagers and destroying their harvest.
Ram Din's family finally accept Surjit as one of their own, and arrange his marriage to Phoolmati. In a final twist though, his two years' imprisonment is complete, and the Police arrive to escort him back to town. He pleads with the Judge to let him serve a life sentence, and the Judge smiles, vindicated that his experiment has been successfu

He was noticed for his performance in his next film Baharon Ke Sapne which was followed by box office successes like Aurat (1967), Khamoshi, and Aradhana (1969). Established as a popular protagonist, he appeared in many romantic, melodramatic and social films, often appearing with the same actresses - such as Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Hema Malini and Asha Parekh.
During the peak of his career he would be mobbed during public appearances. Fans kissed his car, which would be covered with lipstick marks, and lined the road, cheering and chanting his name. Female fans sent him letters written in their own blood.
Several songs sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1970s were based on Rajesh Khanna.during the filming of the song 'mere sapnon ki rani' aradhana sharmila tagore was shooting for a satya jit rai film and the director shakti samanta had to shoot their scenes separately and then join the scenes together. needless to say this was the the most popular song of its generation and went on to become the biggest attraction of the movie aradhana.

His success began to diminish in terms of box office results of his films in the mid 1970s (1976-78) to some extent owing to various factors, including internal politics against him in film industry, his sudden marriage with Dimple Kapadia, emergence of action oriented masala films and young generation heros like Rishi Kapoor, the introduction of video (VCR) in India and its resulting decrease in number of family audiences at Cinema halls.Post-1976,
Khanna had a string of box office flops, including Aaina and Mehbooba. Media reports in the late seventies suggested that success had perhaps caused Khanna to be complacent, often turning up late for shoots and throwing tantrums, as well as having a whole entourage of sycophants accompany him for his shoots. This behaviour coupled with the changing trend from romantic and social movies to action oriented multi-star films in the late-1970s and early-1980s caused the decline of Khanna's career in terms of box office ratings to some extent. However, he continued basically in solo hero social sober household meaningful films during multistar masala films' era.
Khanna met with more success in challenging roles with critically acclaimed box office hits such as ,Amardeep,Thodi Si Bewafai, Dard, 'Dhanwaan' 'Avtaar' 'Agar Tum Na Hote, Souten,Red Rose etc. (1979 onwards to end of 80s). He also performed in few multistar films with central characters such as Kudrat, Rajpoot, Dharam Aur Kanoon, and Ashanti. He shared a very close relationship with R.D.Burman and Kishore Kumar. The trio were very close friends and have worked together in more than thirty films. Several actors who were part of the cast of most of his films included Sujith Kumar, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Asrani, Bindu, Vijay Arora and A K Hangal, who remained part of his "team" until the late eighties.
From the early nineties onwards he stopped acting and served as M.P. of New Delhi Constituency from 1991 to 1996. During that period, he returned to acting, appearing in Khudai (1994). He made a come back as a NRI in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (2002). In September 2007, he officially announced his planned return to the big screen, signing a contract for several new films, including some TV serials. His successful TV serial Raghukul Reet Sada Chali Aayi began in November 2008 and ended in September 2009. Presently he has been offered a huge amount (Rs.3.00 Crore) to enter in Big Boss 3 season in Colour Channel due to heavy demand in term of TRP.

He made a come back as a NRI in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (2002). In September 2007, he officially announced his planned return to the big screen, signing a contract for several new films, including some TV serials. His successful TV serial Raghukul Reet Sada Chali Aayi began in November 2008 and ended in September 2009. Presently he has been offered a huge amount (Rs.3.00 Crore) to enter in Big Boss 3 season in Colour Channel due to heavy demand in term of TRP.
He died on 18 July 2012, at his bungalow in Mumbai due to cancer

Surjit Singh (Rajesh Khanna) earns a living driving a truck. He is a rash driver and more than usually also driving while drunk. One night he stops at the prostitute Chamelibai's (Bindu), spends the night with her, and gets up late the next morning. He rushes out and drives at breakneck speed in thick fog to make up for lost time while again drinking. He inevitably ends up running over and killing a farmer named Ram Din. But despite the opportunity to hit and run, he decides to stay and face the consequences. He is arrested by the police, charged, and brought before the courts.
Surjit acknowledges his guilt to the Judge (Rehman) who in-turn knows that he should send Surjit to prison for two years. But moved by the plight of Ram Din's family (which include his widow Malti (Meena Kumari); his sister Kamla (Kumari Naaz); two young sons; a crippled father Ganga Din (Nana Palsikar), and his blind mother (Leela Mishra)), and his inherent belief that imprisonment does not serve the good of the victim or the perpetrator, the Judge resolves to try a novel experiment of forcing Surjit to live with Ram Din's family and looking after their financial needs. A horrified Surjit attempts in vain to convince the Judge to change his ruling. He is transported to his new "prison" under police protection, where he is met by hostile villagers. Ram Din's family detests his presence, and calls him "Dushman" (The enemy). Surjit attempts to escape on the first night, but is apprehended and brought back to serve his time.
He gradually comes to terms with the twist of fate that has forced him to become a subsistence farmer and live under the ever unforgiving eyes of Ram Din's family. Over time he starts sincerely working for the family and its interests. He meets Phoolmati Mumtaz, a happy-go-lucky girl who operates a small bi-scope machine to entertain the village kids. They take an instant liking to each other, which blossoms into love. He also finds friends amongst the previously hostile villagers. He works hard on the family plot while also protecting it from the clutches of a local landlord who has ill intentioned designs on the land and also on Kamla.
Surmounting many obstacles, Surjit is able to arrange the marriage of Kamla with her childhood sweetheart. With the help of a benevolent police force and the Judge, he is also able to thwart the many attempts of the landlord to seize the family's land, and that of other villagers who have mortgaged their land with the same landlord. Malti however, is unable to forgive Surjit for having killed her husband.
Things take a dramatic turn for the worse when Surjit is framed and arrested for the accidental death of Phoolmati's drunk grandfather. At the same time, the landlord has the lush harvest produced by Surjit and other villagers covertly set ablaze, and has Phoolmati kidnapped, primarily to punish Surjit. Malti, who has been working in one of the landlord's, saw mills thinking he is an honourable man, witnesses his misdeeds, and finally realizes her mistake. She is able to rescue Phoolmati but gets trapped by the landlord instead, who attempts to rape her. Meanwhile Surjit stages an escape from his holding cell and with the help of Phoolmati, is able to come to Malti's rescue in the nick of time. He confronts the landlord and violently assaults him as payback. The police show up and arrest the landlord for his role in defrauding the villagers and destroying their harvest.
Ram Din's family finally accepts Surjit as one of their own, and arranges his marriage to Phoolmati. In a final twist though, his two years' imprisonment is complete, and the Police arrive to escort him back to town. He pleads with the Judge to let him serve a life sentence, and the Judge smiles, vindicated that his experiment has been successful.

Mumtaz (born 31 July 1947 in Bombay, India) is a famous Bollywood actress, most remembered for her roles in Tere Mere Sapne (1971) and Khilona (1970), which got her Filmfare Best Actress Award, while the film itself, won Filmfare Best Movie Award.
Mumtaz entered Bollywood at the age of twelve.She started as an extra in films in the early 1960s. She accepted small roles in big films like Mujhe Jeene Do and big roles in small budgeted stunt films like Boxer, Samson, Tarzan, and King Kong. In the 1960s, she starred in as many as 16 action films with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh and was labelled as a stunt film heroine.
She first gained attention in a supporting role as a vamp in the A grade color hit film Mere Sanam (1965). The memorable sexy song "yeh hai reshmai "was picturized on her. The success of the film led to another sizzling song "Aye dushman jaan" in another big-budget film Patthar Ke Sanam. Finally, she gained major attention when she played one of Dilip Kumar's leading ladies in Ram Aur Shyam (1967). The film became one of the top hits of the year, and she received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress.
Suddenly, Mumtaz was flooded with offers, but still not for major leading lady roles. She supported Sharmila Tagore in several films in the late 1960s, such as for Saawan Ki Ghata, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, and Mere Humdum Mere Dost. She had a memorable song and dance number ("Aaj kal tere mere") with her then-boyfriend Shammi Kapoor in the hit film Brahmachari (1968).
It took Raj Khosla's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969) starring the phenomenon Rajesh Khanna to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Oddly, it was just an inconsequential girlfriend role, but director Khosla, so good at picturizing songs, filmed four unforgettable songs on Mumtaz. The film made her hugely popular, and she acknowledged that even though she had a small role, it was still one of her favorite films.
When earlier, she had played a small role as Rajendra Kumar's sister in Gehra Daag, now was elevated to playing his leading lady in Tangewala. Earlier, Shashi Kapoor had refused to work with her because she was a "stunt film heroine" in Saccha Jootha, now wanted her to be his heroine in Chor Machaye Shor.
Mumtaz had no problems acting sexy and due to her great looks, easily had several more hit films. She acted in over a hundred films in a career that spanned just 12 years. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for one of her favorite films Khilona in 1970, and she was "very happy that the audience accepted her in an emotional role." Mumtaz starred in many movies with Feroz Khan and her other popular pairing have been with Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna.
She has also acted with Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and other top heroes of her era. She was proud of her work in her other favorite films Tere Mere Sapne for director Vijay Anand, as well as Roop Tera Mastana, Aap Ki Kasam, and Aaina.
She quit acting after her appearance in Aaina (1977) which was a flop, even though it had co-starred Rajesh Khanna and was directed by famous director Kailasam Balachander. After that, she left films for marriage to a millionaire and only returned for one final film appearance 12 years later in the 1989 film Aandhiyan, which flopped and she turned down other film offers. In 1996 she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mumtaz married millionaire Mayur Madhvani on 29 May 1974. They have two daughters Natasha and Tanya. Natasha, the elder daughter, married actor Fardeen Khan, son of Feroz Khan, in a lavish ceremony, in December 2005. Her sister Mallika is married to Randhawa, younger brother of famous wrestler Dara Singh.
Mumtaz had acknowledged that she has successfully battled cancer and that she and her husband have overcome personal problems in their marriage.
When asked which performances she is most proud of: "I was okay, nothing great at all. I liked Khilona that fetched me the Filmfare Best Actress Award. I also liked myself in Roop Tera Mastana, Aaina and Tere Mere Sapne. I should have won the Best Actress Award for Tere Mere Sapne. I really deserved it. Instead it went to Asha Parekh for Kati Patang in which she wore white and stood in front of piano doing precious little. Khair, jaane do (let it go). God has given me so much.

Dushman is a 1972 Hindi film produced by Premji and directed by Dulal Guha. The film stars Rajesh Khanna in the title role and for which he received a Filmfare nomination as Best Actor, the only nomination for the film. Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Bindu, .The music was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal while the lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi .The film became a "super-hit" at the box office
Mumtaz (born 31 July 1947 in Bombay, India) is a famous Bollywood actress, most remembered for her roles in Tere Mere Sapne (1971) and Khilona (1970), which got her Filmfare Best Actress Award, while the film itself, won Filmfare Best Movie Award.
Mumtaz entered Bollywood at the age of twelve.She started as an extra in films in the early 1960s. She accepted small roles in big films like Mujhe Jeene Do and big roles in small budgeted stunt films like Boxer, Samson, Tarzan, and King Kong. In the 1960s, she starred in as many as 16 action films with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh and was labelled as a stunt film heroine.
She first gained attention in a supporting role as a vamp in the A grade color hit film Mere Sanam (1965). The memorable sexy song "yeh hai reshmai "was picturized on her. The success of the film led to another sizzling song "Aye dushman jaan" in another big-budget film Patthar Ke Sanam. Finally, she gained major attention when she played one of Dilip Kumar's leading ladies in Ram Aur Shyam (1967). The film became one of the top hits of the year, and she received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress.
Suddenly, Mumtaz was flooded with offers, but still not for major leading lady roles. She supported Sharmila Tagore in several films in the late 1960s, such as for Saawan Ki Ghata, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, and Mere Humdum Mere Dost. She had a memorable song and dance number ("Aaj kal tere mere") with her then-boyfriend Shammi Kapoor in the hit film Brahmachari (1968).
It took Raj Khosla's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969) starring the phenomenon Rajesh Khanna to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Oddly, it was just an inconsequential girlfriend role, but director Khosla, so good at picturizing songs, filmed four unforgettable songs on Mumtaz. The film made her hugely popular, and she acknowledged that even though she had a small role, it was still one of her favorite films.
When earlier, she had played a small role as Rajendra Kumar's sister in Gehra Daag, now was elevated to playing his leading lady in Tangewala. Earlier, Shashi Kapoor had refused to work with her because she was a "stunt film heroine" in Saccha Jootha, now wanted her to be his heroine in Chor Machaye Shor.
Mumtaz had no problems acting sexy and due to her great looks, easily had several more hit films. She acted in over a hundred films in a career that spanned just 12 years. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for one of her favorite films Khilona in 1970, and she was "very happy that the audience accepted her in an emotional role." Mumtaz starred in many movies with Feroz Khan and her other popular pairing have been with Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna.
She has also acted with Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and other top heroes of her era. She was proud of her work in her other favorite films Tere Mere Sapne for director Vijay Anand, as well as Roop Tera Mastana, Aap Ki Kasam, and Aaina.
She quit acting after her appearance in Aaina (1977) which was a flop, even though it had co-starred Rajesh Khanna and was directed by famous director Kailasam Balachander. After that, she left films for marriage to a millionaire and only returned for one final film appearance 12 years later in the 1989 film Aandhiyan, which flopped and she turned down other film offers. In 1996 she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mumtaz married millionaire Mayur Madhvani on 29 May 1974. They have two daughters Natasha and Tanya. Natasha, the elder daughter, married actor Fardeen Khan, son of Feroz Khan, in a lavish ceremony, in December 2005. Her sister Mallika is married to Randhawa, younger brother of famous wrestler Dara Singh.
Mumtaz had acknowledged that she has successfully battled cancer and that she and her husband have overcome personal problems in their marriage.
When asked which performances she is most proud of: "I was okay, nothing great at all. I liked Khilona that fetched me the Filmfare Best Actress Award. I also liked myself in Roop Tera Mastana, Aaina and Tere Mere Sapne. I should have won the Best Actress Award for Tere Mere Sapne. I really deserved it. Instead it went to Asha Parekh for Kati Patang in which she wore white and stood in front of piano doing precious little. Khair, jaane do (let it go). God has given me so much.
