We can evolve bacteria, plants and animals -- futurist Juan Enriquez asks: Is it ethical to evolve the human body? In a visionary talk that ranges from medieval prosthetics to present day neuroengineering and genetics, Enriquez sorts out the ethics associated with evolving humans and imagines the ways we'll have to transform our own bodies if we hope to explore and live in places other than Earth. For four billion years, what lived and died on Earth depended on two principles: natural selection and random mutation. Then humans came along and changed everything — hybridizing plants, breeding animals, altering the environment and even purposefully evolving ourselves. Juan Enriquez and Steve Guillans stopped by Google's Cambridge, MA office to discuss their book "Evolving Ourselves: How Unnatural Selection and Nonrandom Mutation are Changing Life on Earth". The book's premise is that new advances in biotechnology help us mitigate the cruel forces of natural selection, from saving prematurely born babies to gene therapies for sickle cell anemia and other conditions. As technology enables us to take control of our genes, we will be able to alter our own species and many others. Future humans could become great caretakers of the planet, as well as a more diverse, more resilient, gentler, and more intelligent species —but only if we make the right choices now. This was a fascinating talk about human evolution, past and FUTURE. Enriquez details, among other things how humans actually have four genomes; why the obesity problem has spread to wild birds;why autism may be a symptom of the IT economy; why blue eyes are going extinct in the US; and, you know, how we might live forever.

Over the last century or two, and especially over the last decade, humans fundamentally altered these rules. As we practice extreme human intervention and alter the course of natural selection we create a parallel evolutionary track, one whose rules and outcomes depend on what we want. Futurist Juan Enriquez, co-founder and managing director of Excel Venture Management, argues that humans are reshaping the path of evolution through “unnatural selection,” in the form of genetic science and various human actions. In this discussion at the 2017 Goldman Sachs EMEA CEO Forum in London, Enriquez discusses some of the positive outcomes of this shift and why “there’s no better time to be alive than today, except in two generations, because that’s going to be cooler.” Learn more: http://link.gs.com/Mstc
