The Arctic Ocean (also known as the Northern Ocean), located in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Arctic north polar region, is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceanic divisions. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognizes it as an ocean, although some oceanographers call it the Arctic Mediterranean Sea or simply the Arctic Sea, classifying it a mediterranean sea or an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, the Arctic Ocean can be seen as the northernmost part of the all-encompassing World Ocean.
Almost completely surrounded by Eurasia and North America, the Arctic Ocean is partly covered by sea ice throughout the year (and almost completely in winter). The Arctic Ocean's surface temperature and salinity vary seasonally as the ice cover melts and freezes; its salinity is the lowest on average of the five major oceans, due to low evaporation, heavy fresh water inflow from rivers and streams, and limited connection and outflow to surrounding oceanic waters with higher salinities. The summer shrinking of the ice has been quoted at 50%. The US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) uses satellite data to provide a daily record of Arctic sea ice cover and the rate of melting compared to an average period and specific past years.

Time-lapse series of coastal bluff erosion along the Arctic Coast at Drew Point, Beaufort Sea, Alaska. Coastal erosion rates exceeding 20 meters per year are being observed along the Arctic Coast, and they are especially high along Alaska's Beaufort Sea coastline. Comparison of aerial photos and LANDSAT imagery suggest accelerating erosion rates over the last 50 years. Arctic sea ice coverage has been declining dramatically over the last few decades and record September minima were observed in 2007. These observations suggest a causal relationship between sea ice decline and coastal change. The timelapse movies presented here show that the relative roles of thermal and wave energy may be significant. The bluffs consist of silt and have high ice-content. The thawing of the ice-rich bluffs b...

Travel video about destination Antarctic. The Antarctic lies far away from the civilised world and is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, a spectacular wilderness of snow, ice and rock: the last, large eco system on the planet. In Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, we begin our expedition by cruise ship to some of the most remote locations in the Antarctic. The boat makes its way along the coastline of a land of icebergs, glaciers and snow covered islands on the coldest, driest and most deserted continent on Earth. The journey through the Lemaire Channel is one of the most spectacular maritime passages one could ever experience. Everything looks absolutely newly-created. The channel is about fifteen kilometres long and up to a hundred metres wide, with snow covered islands ...
Travel video about destination Antarctica. Travelling the Arctic by ship has always been one of those special dream destinations, particularly in the Northern Polar Sea area, the icy world around the North Pole where little life exists. Our expedition begins in Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen from where we are going to travel by cruise ship to the remotest locations of the Arctic. Our ship, the Plancius, was originally the oceanographic research ship of the Dutch monarchy. In Zodiacs - robust inflatable boats - we get our first real sense of the Arctic Ocean. We travel alongside the 14th of July Glacier while the boatman skilfully manoeuvres between fragments of floating icebergs. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. This area was mined un...

As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antarctica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wi...
Travel video about destination Arctic. The Arctic is an icy world surrounding the North Pole and a strange and wonderful world of ice, snow, land and water. To experience this region we travel by ship. Soon everyone is on board and our adventure can begin. The route leads north along the coast which is separated by deep fjords. We arrive at Kongsfjorden, our first Spitsbergen destination with the 14th July Glacier cloaked in fog. To the rear, steep scree slopes and sheer rock walls and, in front, a glacier breaks off into the Arctic Ocean. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Coal mining was the basis of the settlement and many people came to this desolate place. Later, the extraction of coal became unprofitable and it was virtually abandoned. A har...

When you plan a trip to Nice, France, you’re in good company: This city has been a tourist destination since at least the 18th century. The European aristocracy often spent their winters in the pleasant climate, with a sunset walk on the shoreline being the highlight of each day. You can walk in their footsteps—literally—with a stroll down the Promenade des Anglais, which roughly translates to Walkway of the English. On a tour of Nice, you’ll enjoy the mixture of French and Italian culture that permeates the city’s architecture, public art, and yes, the food. Bon appetit! The residents of Nice love the outdoors, and you will, too, as you explore the Place Massena—the city’s main square, where you can enjoy a snack at a café or do some shopping in its many boutiques. Success in the Arctic depends on unity of effort among Arctic nations. Why? Because no single nation has the sovereignty, capacity or control over all the resources necessary to meet the emerging challenges in the Arctic. While in Greenland, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft and Sen. Angus King met with the Joint Arctic Command, government dignitaries, leaders of indigenous communities and members of the scientific community to learn more about how our missions may change in this complicated operating environment. Success in the Arctic truly requires a united front and the Arctic Coast Guard Forum is the body that facilitates the necessary cooperation. The era of the Arctic is just beginning, and the Coast Guard stands alongside our international partners to ensure there is safe, se...
Environmental changes in the polar regions are boosting new economic opportunities and transforming maritime activity in the regions. Access to previously unreachable natural resources is now possible and is encouraging new sovereignty claims by Arctic nations. All this, while eco-tourism is on the rise as the Arctic beckons to the adventurous. Observing the Jakobshavn Glacier and witnessing the increased activity in the Arctic firsthand, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft and Arctic Caucus co-chairman Sen. Angus King, discussed the need for additional heavy icebreakers to protect U.S. economic and security interests and to enforce our own sovereignty.

Participants of the 'Pole of Cold Connects the Oceans' project organised by the Russian Geographical Society arrived in Russkoye Ustye on August 5, as shown by footage released on Thursday. Their epic river expedition empirically proved the existence of an internal waterway between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. The expedition, headed by Nikolai Nakhodkin, started from Okhotsk in the Khabarovsk Territory in July. It comprised 16 members who rafted on inflatable boats along waterways that run between the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic. In total, the scientists and crew members covered about 2,800 kilometres (1,739 miles), finishing the route in the little village of Ustye, near the Arctic coast. Nakhodkin said “we have reached the Arctic Ocean coast. We were first to discover a river way fro...

Franklin's lost expedition was a British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed England in 1845 aboard two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. A Royal Navy officer and experienced explorer, Franklin had served on three previous Arctic expeditions, the latter two as commanding officer. His fourth and last, undertaken when he was 59, was meant to traverse the last unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage. After a few early fatalities, the two ships became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. The entire expedition, 129 men including Franklin, was lost.Pressed by Franklin's wife, Jane, Lady Franklin, and others, the Admiralty launched a search for the missing expedition in 1848. Prompted in part by Franklin's fame a...

Constance was the best-selling author of eight non-fiction books, five detailing their lives and adventures in the far north. Films that the couple shot on 16mm color film were the subject of national lecture tours. Shot with great care and artfulness under extreme living conditions, these films depict the unique lives of the Helmericks family, as well a...
In June 2012, four very excited South Africans and one grumpy Scottish sea dog set sail for the adventure of their lives. After crossing the Atlantic from Scotland, the team did several big wall climbs on the west coast of Greenland and north coast of Baffin Island. The most notable ascent was Improbability Drive on Impossible Wall in Greenland, a new free route that took nine days of continuous living on the wall to complete. The team then spent another 3 months on Dodo's Delight (their 33ft fiberglass sailboat) winding their way through the Arctic islands of Northern Canada to complete the Northwest Passage to Alaska. The project is sponsored by First Ascent Clothing, Beal, Black Diamond and Saltic, Mountain Club of South Africa, Gina Watkins Memorial Trust, Shipton Tillman Goretex...
