Post-punk is a rock music movement with its roots in the late 1970s, following on the heels of the initial punk rock explosion of the mid-1970s. The genre retains its roots in the punk movement but is more introverted, complex and experimental.^[1] Post-punk laid the groundwork for alternative rock by broadening the range of punk and underground music, incorporating elements of Krautrock (particularly the use of synthesizers and extensive repetition), Jamaican dub music (specifically in bass guitar), American funk, studio experimentation, and even punk's traditional polar opposite, disco, into the genre.

It found a firm place in the 1980s independent scene, and led to the development of genres such as gothic rock, industrial music, and alternative rock.

Origin of the term[link]

The term "post punk" was used in 1977 by Sounds to describe Siouxsie and the Banshees.^[2] In 1980 critic Greil Marcus referred to "Britain's postpunk pop avant-garde" in a July 24, 1980 Rolling Stone article. He applied the phrase to such bands as Gang of Four, The Raincoats, and Essential Logic, which he wrote were "sparked by a tension, humor, and sense of paradox plainly unique in present-day pop music."^[3]

During the first wave of punk, roughly spanning 1974–1978, artists such as Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Ramones, Patti Smith and The Saints began to challenge the current styles and conventions of rock music by stripping the musical structure down to a few basic chords and progressions with an emphasis on speed. Examples of post-punk outfits include Public Image Ltd, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and New Order, The Fall, Magazine, The Cure, Gang of Four, Wire, Subway Sect, The Pop Group, The Birthday Party, Crass, Devo, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Bauhaus, The Psychedelic Furs, Killing Joke, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Sisters of Mercy, The Lords of the New Church, The Sound, Neu Electrikk. Several bands formed in the wake of traditional punk rock groups: Magazine was formed by Howard Devoto, formerly of Buzzcocks, for instance, and Public Image Ltd derived from the Sex Pistols. A list of predecessors to the post-punk genre of music might include Television, whose album Marquee Moon, although released in 1977 (and recorded in 1976) at the height of punk, is universally considered post-punk in style. Other groups, such as The Clash, remained predominantly punk in nature, yet were inspired by the experimentalism of post-punk, most notably in their album Sandinista!.

Championed by late-night BBC DJ John Peel and record label/shop Rough Trade (among others, including Factory, Cherry Red, Mute, Glass, Fast, Postcard, Industrial, Axis/4AD and Falling A), "post-punk" could arguably be said to encompass many diverse groups and musicians.

Around 1977, in North America, the New York No Wave was also tied in with the emerging eurocentric post-punk movement. Bands and artists included Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Mars, James Chance and the Contortions, DNA, Bush Tetras, Theoretical Girls, Swans, and Sonic Youth. No Wave focused more on performance art than actual coherent musical structure. The Brian Eno-produced No New York compilation is considered the quintessential testament to the history of No Wave.^[4]

The original post-punk movement ended as the bands associated with the movement turned away from its aesthetics, just as post-punk bands had originally left punk rock behind in favor of new sounds. Many post-punk bands, most notably The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, evolved into gothic rock and became identified with the goth subculture. Some shifted to a more commercial New Wave sound (such as Gang of Four),^[5][6] while others were fixtures on American college radio and became early examples of alternative rock. In the United States driven by MTV and modern rock radio stations a number of post-punk acts had an influence on or became part of the Second British Invasion of "New Music" there.^{[7][8][9][10]}

Post-punk revival[link]

The turn of the 21st century saw a post-punk revival in British and American alternative rock, which soon started appearing in other countries, as well. The earliest sign of a revival was the emergence of various underground bands in the mid-'90s. However, the first commercially successful bands - The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and Editors - surfaced in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Modern post-punk is more commercially successful than in the 1970s and 1980s.

Isa Chandra Moskowitz is an American author, magazine columnist, and former host of community access cooking show Post Punk Kitchen. She has authored several best-selling cookbooks,^[1] including Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, Veganomicon, Vegan Brunch,Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar and Appetite for Reduction.

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, and having dropped out of The High School of Music & Art where she majored in fine art, Moskowitz found herself drawn toward the punk rock scene of the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1980s, embracing first a vegetarian diet, then veganism.^[2] The experimentation and adaptation required for her new diet led to developing her skills as a cook and as an inventor of her own recipes. She volunteered with Food Not Bombs,^[3] an anarchist and punk-rock centered organization that provides free vegan meals to the homeless and needy.

The inspiration to create her own cooking show came while watching the Food Network and wondering to herself why there were no vegan shows.^[4] According to Moskowitz the show used the title The Post Punk Kitchen to signify the feeling of being "older and facing the conundrum of growing up and making compromises that their eighteen-year-old selves might hate them for".^[4] The show was popular for its laid-back approach and unscripted dialogue. Bands played on the show, and even helped out with the cooking. The Post Punk Kitchen was co-hosted by Terry Hope Romero and aired on community access television in both Manhattan and Brooklyn between 2003 and 2005.

The success of The Post Punk Kitchen led to the compilation of a cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance, in late 2005.^[5] The recipes, rather than relying on expensive and heavily processed meat substitutes, use readily available and inexpensive ingredients. The book also includes multiple references to the punk-rock subculture with Moskowitz visibly sporting a t-shirt from pioneering British anarcho-punk band Crass on the book's cover.

In 2006, Moskowitz and her former co-host, Romero, created a cookbook consisting entirely of vegan cupcake recipes, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, which was named Cookbook Of The Year by VegNews magazine. 2007 saw the release of yet another book, Veganomicon, which bills itself as the "ultimate vegan cookbook." Moskowitz has since written three more books, Vegan Brunch (2009), Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar (2009) and Appetite for Reduction (2010).

In April 2008, she relocated from New York to Portland, Oregon, then to Omaha, Nebraska in 2010.

Activism[link]

Moskowitz is vocal opponent of "humane meat",^[6] promoting animal rights through what she calls "Culinary Activism" or "Baketivism":^[7]

"I think that activism isn’t what you decide to do but how it affects people. So if someone says, I’m going to become an activist! I’m going to stand on a street corner and preach about veganism! And then they go ahead and do that but no one listens and no one becomes vegan, then is that activism? On the other hand, maybe there’s a girl in the middle of nowhere who loves animals and decided to bake vegan. And then people taste her cupcakes and are like “What the hell, I’ll go vegan, too.” Obviously I think the latter is more effective, but I guess people might not see it as activism".^[8]

In 2008 she founded the organization Apron Activists ("four courses for causes") to raise money for local animal rights organisations in Oregon and works with Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary to raise money through cooking.^[9] After the 2010 Haiti earthquake Moskowitz posted on her blog a call for vegans to host bake sales in their home cities to fundraise for relief^[10] which resulted in over $75,000 being raised.^[8]

In July of 2011, Moskowitz, along with Anna Dorfman, Leigh Ellis and John McDevitt created The Teal Cat Project to raise money for cat rescue groups across the country that participate in Trap-Neuter-Return programs. Moskowitz and the crew collect old ceramic cat figurines (or tchotchkes as they are known in Moskowitz' place of birth), upcycle them with a coat of teal paint, and number them for authenticity. T-shirts are also sold to offset the cost of supplies.

Moskowitz is currently a Bust magazine columnist where she writes a column called "Nickle & Dined" that focuses on cooking on a limited budget and has written for Vegetarian Times, Time Out NY, Natural Health and VegNews. Moskowitz also starred in a short-lived podcast with Herbivore Publishing mogul Josh Hooten called Naked Vaygun in late 2007.

Cut La Roc (born in January, 1972, Brighton, United Kingdom) is a British DJ, Break (music), Hip Hop and House music artist and also singer-songwriter. He is considered a pioneer of Big Beat music, effectively fusing styles and genres into a form popular with live audiences.

Biography[link]

Lee Potter, better known by his stage name Cut La Roc grew up in Brighton, United Kingdom and is signed to the British label Rocstar Recordings.

He started creating and producing music as teenager when House music's sub-genre Acid house came along at the end of the eighties. In an interview he described the cause of his "infection" for electronic music and DJ-ing: I'd never really liked house music up until then, but this was kind of different, because it had the hip-hop element through the breakbeats, it made total sense to me.^[1]

In 1998 he produced the well known track "Post Punk Progression" which NME lauded as "What The Beatles would have sounded like if they'd invented jungle" Cut La Roc produced and released in 1999 a mix album for the Ministry Of Sound's FSUK imprint and set the bar high with a new world record for DJing with 9 deck and what made him to the scratch-mix specialist of the Skint gang who's even in the Guinness Book World Records for mixing with the most decks at once (9) ever. He spent three years consistently DJing in Australia, the United States, Europe and the Far East.

Thrilling scratch tricks and a unique DJ-ing technique remain Cut La Roc's speciality when he's playing out and his DJ sets combine the best of old and new Hip hop. He had appeared on Top Of The Pops as the late DJ Wildchild (musician) on the top ten hit Renegade Master'. Furthermore he produced with Alternative rock band Snow Patrol's frontman Gary Lightbody the tracks Fallen and Mishka. Cut La Roc held a 4 year residency at the famous Big Beat Boutique and performed alongside the artists Fat Boy Slim and Armand Van Helden. He performs shows all over the globe.

His currently released album is called Nemesis. There will follow in 2009/10 Nemesis Album Sampler 1 and Nemesis Album Sampler 2 (Rocstar Recordings).
