Meiji Jingu Shrine Gyoen
Meiji Jingu Shrine Gyoen 5/16/10
Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort Empress Shoken. This shrine was located in the middle of Tokyo, in the Harajuku district. It was amazing to see such a beautiful wooded area in the middle of a metropolitan area.
Some notes:
-The wine casks you see are stored within the shrine grounds to be blessed
-When you see Zach washing his hands, he’s actually paying respects at the shrine

I got to experience a part of Japanese religion this past Sunday at Harajuku. Meiji Shrine was built in 1920 for the late Emperor Meiji. It was rebuilt after being destroyed after WWII. It is a popular place for traditional weddings.

Gingko Avenue at Meiji-Jingu Gaien, Tokyo [iPhone 4S/HD]
http://www.youtube.com/user/ohayuni71 --Visit for more videos--
Meiji-Jingu Gaien, or Meiji Shrine Outer Precinct, is a massive garden including a gallery, a hall and a variety of sports facilities such as National Olympic Stadium and Jingu Baseball Stadium. It was built to honor the Meiji Emperor's deed after his demise and has been run by Meiji Shrine.
The main approach of the garden, that leads you to the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, is outlined with gingko trees. The entrance of the avenue is one meter higher than the end of it. Moreover, it is designed that the trees at the entrance side grow taller than the ones at the end side do. They are to make the avenue and the gallery look more beautiful in perspective.
The trees are gloriously ablaze in late autumn. The warm scenery, in the season in which you feel the advent of winter, is a delight for people walking by.

Jidai Matsuri: Festival of Ages in Kyoto City!
Jidai Matsuri is one of Kyoto’s Big Three festivals, the other two being Aoi Matsuri and Gion Matsuri. Jidai Matsuri is always held on October the 22nd (though the actual festivities begin on October the 15th), which is what many see as Kyoto’s birthday, as that is the day that Emperor Kanmu, in the year 794, moved the capital from Nagaoka Palace to Heian Palace which was located in Kyoto. Though the date of the festival celebrates this ancient event, the actual festivities were begun in the year 1895, October the 25th, to celebrate the newly built Heian Jingu. Actually, many feel that the real reason that Jidai Matsuri was established was because in 1868, the Japanese capital was relocated to Tokyo along with the Imperial family, Imperial staff, and many government officials. Afraid that this would cause a loss of glory and interest from the people, the city government and the Kyoto Prefectural Government commemorated the 1100th year of Heian-kyo (the old name of Kyoto, established as said before previously when the capital was moved to Heian Palace in 794) by building Heian Jingu.
To liven the festival up, a plan was proposed to have the scenes of ancient Kyoto according to each period parade down the street, and that is how Jidai Matsuri came into being today. Eventually, this festival came to symbolize the journey of Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Koumei - the two gods celebrated at Heian Jingu - as they travel till Heian Jingu with the parade and watch the brilliance of the city that they once called home.
