Jane Grant (May 29, 1892 – March 16, 1972) was a New York City journalist who co-founded The New Yorker with her first husband, Harold Ross.

Her life[link]

She was born Jeanette Cole Grant in Joplin, Missouri, and grew up and went to school in Girard, Kansas. Grant originally trained to be a vocalist. She came to New York City at 16 to pursue singing, but fell into magazine writing, later joining the staff of The New York Times.

Grant was close friends with critic Alexander Woollcott; it was through him that she joined the Algonquin Round Table. Another good friend was the writer Janet Flanner. Grant showed Ross her friend's letters from Paris; Ross liked them so much he tapped her to be one of The New Yorker 's greatest correspondents. Grant also helped on the business side of the magazine in its earliest days.

In World War I, Grant, who was also a talented singer and dancer, talked her way onto a troopship to France. She joined the American Red Cross and entertained soldiers during shows in Paris and at camps. It was in France that she first met Ross and the future "Vicious Circle" members.

In 1921, Grant, along with Ruth Hale, founded the Lucy Stone League, which was dedicated, in the manner of Lucy Stone, to helping women keep their maiden names after marriage^[1] (as Grant did after her two marriages); the group was a vocal group of feminists throughout the 1920s and '30s.

Ross and Grant divorced in 1929 after nine years of marriage. She published a memoir about Ross called Ross, The New Yorker and Me (Reynal and Co., 1968 NY NY).

As a journalist for The New York Times (she was the first woman reporter in the city room), she covered women's issues, questioning public figures about their views on the status of women and interviewing women who worked in traditionally male professions.

In 1939 she married William B. Harris, the editor of Fortune magazine. Grant became even more active in feminist causes, reactivating the Lucy Stone League and expanding its purpose. She continued to work for the rights of women into the 1960s, advocating for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and serving on the National Council of Women.

She and Harris moved from Manhattan to Litchfield, Connecticut, before World War II. The couple had a love of nature and flowers; so they founded White Flower Farm out of a barn on their property. In the 1950s they started a mail order business for home gardening; it was a big success.

Grant died in 1972 on the Connecticut farm she shared with her husband. Harris sold the nursery to its current owner, Eliot Wadsworth, in 1976.

In 1974 Harris was approached for an endowment by the University of Oregon. After a visit to the school, he agreed to fund a center that engaged in research on women and gender studies. In 1976, Harris donated Jane Grant's papers to the University of Oregon. Upon his death in 1981, he left a $3.5 million bequest in his wife's name to establish the Center for the Study of Women in Society.

Feminist writing[link]

She wrote Confession of a Feminist,^[2] describing the experience of being feminist, recounting her experience as a reporter among men for the N.Y. Times, explaining why keeping one's name is important for one's identity and thus was a feminist issue, uncovering the protective laws, anticipating the denial of jobs to women when World War II would end, noting that gaining suffrage was important but not enough, and summarizing explicitly discriminatory laws.

Grant was portrayed by the actress Martha Plimpton in the 1994 film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle.^[3]

Laurie Brett (born 28 March 1969^[1]) is a Scottish actress, best known for her role as Jane Beale in EastEnders, in which she starred in it 2004 - 2012.

Personal life[link]

Brett was born in Hamilton, Scotland,^[4] and studied at the London Studio Centre. She is fluent in Spanish. She has participated in various charity events.

Brett was in a relationship with a musician named Dave Evans for six years. The couple met on a blind date in 2001 and got engaged; however, they split in 2007 before the wedding. Laurie told the Sunday Mirror, "It's an amicable split and we remain good friends."^[5]

Brett speaks with a Scottish accent, however, on moving to London, she adopted a London accent - fitting for her EastEnders role.^[4] She says she has always had a "knack" with accents^[6] and has admitted that speaking with a Scottish accent becomes handy when people ask if she is Jane from EastEnders. She has admitted that when asked that question she speaks with a Scottish accent and people then assume they are mistaken.^[7]

Brett has admitted to being a bit of a wild child in her youth, drinking heavily for 20 years.^[8]

Brett revealed in January 2011 that she is pregnant with her first child.^[3] In June it was announced that she had given birth to a baby girl, Erin Anne Millie Brett.^[9]

Career[link]

Brett has admitted that she was a self-starter in the entertainment business. As a child she had ballet lessons but was later forced to give this up due to a knee injury. At age 17 she left Scotland to attend drama school in London, whilst at drama school she earned a living working as a bouncer at a club, an usherette and also as a stage technician.^[6] However Brett wished to act full time and for this an Equity Card was required.^[6] The Stage newspaper offered one to actors signing up with Circo Magico Italiano so Brett signed to join.^[4]

She has toured with Circo Magico Italiano, a travelling circus, in Mexico and Central America, played a prostitute in the London production of the musical Les Misérables (her singing and dancing skills have made her a regular in the musical theatre), starred in fringe theatre productions and she has appeared in the UK Tour of The Rocky Horror Show as Magenta, starring alongside Jason Donovan as Frank.^[6] She has appeared in the musical Smokey Joe's Cafe.

Brett made her television debut in London's Burning (as an office girl) in 1992. She has appeared in several television advertisements, including most notably Learn Direct Scotland commercials.

Brett has made appearances on The Bill, My Hero, Family Affairs. It was when she was performing in Les Misérables that she was spotted by EastEnders casting director Kat Collins .^[4]

She made her first appearance in EastEnders in June 2004, at which time the character was known as Jane Collins. She initially signed a three-year contract, and in 2010 she signed a further one-year contract.^[6] She also appears as Jane in the 2010 spin-off series EastEnders: E20. In May 2011 Laurie made a short departure out of the soap due to being on maternity leave. It was revealed that Laurie will re-prise her role in November 2011. In January 2012 Laurie's character Jane departed from EastEnders.

Brett has made various television appearances in aid of charity. She participated in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 telethon appeals for Children in Need where she sang alongside the rest of the EastEnders cast. In the 2008 appeal, she was cast as Mary Poppins. She also participated in the 2010 telethon appeal for Children in Need where she appeared as Jane in the EastEnders and Coronation Street crossover episode "East Street". On 19 February 2010 Brett appeared on The Weakest Link alongside her co-stars and former co-stars, Adam Woodyatt, Laila Morse, Larry Lamb, Todd Carty, Ricky Groves, John Partridge, John Altman and Charlie G. Hawkins. She won and donated her winnings to Breast Cancer campaign and Alzheimers Research.

On the 15th March 2012, it was announced Brett would be joining the BBC's ongoing drama Waterloo Road as Christine Mulgrew a new English Teacher hired by headmaster Michael Byrne. For the first time in Brett's career she will be able to speak in her native accent as the show is relocating to Scotland where series 8 of the show will now preside.

Ross James Belshaw Kemp (born 21 July 1964) is a BAFTA award-winning English actor, author^[2][3] and journalist, who rose to prominence in the role of Grant Mitchell in the BBC soap opera, EastEnders. Since 2006, Kemp has received international recognition as an investigative journalist for his critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary series Ross Kemp on Gangs.

Acting career[link]

Early career[link]

Before becoming publicly known, Kemp made a TV commercial for Kellogg's Fruit 'n Fibre breakfast cereal. His first credited television appearance was in 1986, playing Graham Lodsworth in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm (now Emmerdale). He was infamously thrown off set of Emmerdale after reportedly stubbing his toe on a prop and proceeding to violently attack the prop and claim that all props should be 'burnt alive' . He then ironically made guest appearances in episodes of London's Burning where he was seen throwing numerous props into the on-set fire, and Birds of a Feather. He was in a film called Playing Away in 1986 in a minor role alongside Neil Morrissey.^[4]

His most famous role to date is that of hardman Grant Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. Kemp made his debut in February 1990. On-screen, Kemp, as Grant, was often at the centre of EastEnders' plots, amongst them abusive marriages to Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Tiffany Mitchell (Martine McCutcheon), and the "Sharongate" storyline, that saw Grant's brother Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) conduct an affair with his wife.

Kemp announced his departure from the show in April 1999, his last appearance being aired in October 1999 when his character moved to Brazil. Kemp refused to rule out an eventual return to EastEnders, and various media reports over the next few years speculated that he would be returning to the series. In early 2005, the BBC confirmed that Kemp would be returning to EastEnders later that year after six years away. Kemp joked that he originally auditioned to play the part of Wellard the dog. It was co-star Barbara Windsor who convinced him to go back for a brief period.^[5] His first comeback lasted just a few weeks in 2005, but he returned for a period of three months in 2006, before departing once again in June that year. BBC bosses have left Kemp's role open for a possible future return. Kemp has won various awards for his portrayal of Grant.^[6]

In December 2008, Barbara Windsor, Kemp's onscreen mother Peggy publicly called for Kemp to return to the role of Grant. In September 2009, Steve McFadden (Phil) and Danniella Westbrook (Sam), Kemp's onscreen siblings, also expressed their desire to have him back on the show.^[7] Kemp has not ruled out returning to the soap again, but he said a return would not be any time soon.

Other roles[link]

Following his initial departure from EastEnders, Kemp moved from the BBC to ITV for a reported £1.2 million. Kemp's first role for ITV was in Hero of the Hour. During its filming, on 27 October 1999, Kemp required treatment in the hospital after being shot in the face when a stunt went wrong. He suffered cuts to his chest and face after safety glass shattered, and was also hit in the face by the discharge from a blank round. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Barnet Hospital in north London, but made a full recovery. although he was facing 2–5 months of recovery after the incident

He also starred as the lead in ITV's Christmas edition of A Christmas Carol. He took the lead roles in the television series, Without Motive and In Defence in 2000, and in 2002's Ultimate Force, where he took the role of Army Staff sergeant Henry Garvie from the British Special Air Service. He continued to appear in this role until 2006. He also gained the role of "Cirra" in the 2004 TV film, Spartacus.

In 2005, Kemp appeared in an episode of BBC's Extras and in a two-part adaptation of the Gerald Seymour novel A Line In The Sand for ITV, and he has also presented, on The Friday Night Project and as a stand in host on The Paul O'Grady Show (2007; 2008).

Kemp appeared in the 4th episode of Series 14 of BBC's motoring show Top Gear. He was the "Man in Boot" of a Renault Twingo Sport being tested by Jeremy Clarkson. The test ended with Clarkson driving the car off the quayside of Belfast Harbour, after which Clarkson joked that Kemp was killed.^[8]

The award-winning TV series Ross Kemp on Gangs, in which Kemp interviewed gang members around the world, was first broadcast in 2006. The first series featured gangs and police corruption in Brazil, Māori gangs in New Zealand, neo-Nazi skinheads in California, gangsters in London, and teenagers from Blaenau Gwent. The second series featured "MS13" from El Salvador, neo-Nazis in Russia, football hooligans in Poland, American "Bloods" and "Crips" gangs in St. Louis, and the Numbers gang in South Africa. In May 2007, Ross Kemp on Gangs was awarded a BAFTA award for factual programming. .

The show returned in September 2008 for four more episodes, starting in the Los Angeles district of Compton. A famously hazardous scene was filmed in Compton when gangland junior Matt 'Malicious' Ward misfired his gun in a rival gang's neighbourhood.

The show has also been released on DVD.

In early 2007 Kemp published his experiences from the TV programme in book form, in 'Ross Kemp. Gangs'.

In early 2009, Ross Kemp on Gangs began airing in the United States on the Investigation Discovery channel under the title "Gang Nation."

The Pilot which was initially accepted by Sky was a home video of Ross Kemp and his own gang filming a music video for the then named Channel U On 21 January 2008, Sky broadcast the first episode of a five-part series Ross Kemp in Afghanistan, which entails Kemp following the 1st Battalion of the British Army's Royal Anglian Regiment during their deployment to Afghanistan's Helmand Province from March to August 2007. In preparation for the assignment, Kemp had to participate in military training for personal defence, including use of the SA80 assault rifle. Kemp has a personal interest in the Royal Anglians, as he is from their recruiting area, and his father served with one of the predecessor regiments of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Norfolk Regiment, in Cyprus. He has since returned to Afghanistan to film a second series of Ross Kemp in Afghanistan, which began its broadcast on Sky One on February 1, 2009, titled Ross Kemp Return to Afghanistan.

In January and February 2010, Sky broadcast a 2-part documentary on the situation in Gaza and Israel. Ross Kemp follows Hamas to try and get a glimpse at what is sparking the violence between the two nations in some of the most politically fraught places in the world. He also examines the black market importation from Egypt into Gaza.^[9]

In April 2010 Kemp's documentary, Battle For The Amazon, was shown on Sky 1, Kemp travelled to areas of the Amazon basin in Brazil and Ecuador, filming the practices of cattle farming, soya bean farming and oil exploration that are causing rapid de-forestation in the region.^[10]

Kemp has authored several books. Initially focusing on tie-ins to his various TV documentaries, 2011 saw the publication of his first fictional story, 'Devil to Pay'. A new novel, 'Moving Target', is due for release in summer 2012.

Personal life[link]

His mother Jean was a hairdresser and his father John was a Detective Chief Inspector in the police force. He has one brother, Darren, who is a filmmaker for the BBC. He attended Shenfield High School and the Webber Douglas Academy.^[11]

On 11 June 2002 Kemp married Rebekah Wade, the then editor of The Sun. In November 2005 Wade was arrested following an alleged assault on her husband.^[12] Kemp refused medical attention for a swollen lip and no action was taken.^[13] In March 2009 Kemp and Wade divorced, after he admitted to adultery.^[14] In October 2010, Kemp became a father to a baby boy with ex-partner Nicola Coleman.^[15]

Kemp is a longtime supporter of the Labour Party. In the 2010 General Election he called on voters to back the party "which cares for everyone in society, not just the privileged few."^[16]

In 1999 he was elected as Rector of the University of Glasgow as the candidate of the Glasgow University Labour Club, but resigned in 2001 after the Glasgow University Students' Representative Council passed a motion requesting him to do so.^[17] Kemp was succeeded by Greg Hemphill.^[18]

Jane Morgan (born December 25, 1920^[2][1]) is an American popular music singer. Morgan initially found success in France and the United Kingdom before achieving recognition in the U.S. She won six gold records.

Early life[link]

Morgan was born Florence Catherine Currier in Newton, Massachusetts, one of five siblings born to Bertram H. and Olga (née Brandenberg) Currier, who were both musicians. When she was four years old, Jane and her family moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. The following year she began receiving vocal lessons, while continuing her study of the piano. During the summers, she took on child roles and appeared in theater productions at the Kennebunkport Playhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine, which her brother had founded. Her first professional role was in her brother's melodrama when she was seven years old.^{[citation needed]}

By age 13, she was singing as a lyric soprano. While attending grade school, Morgan actively engaged in singing and competing against other students throughout Florida and the Southeast. After graduating from Seabreeze High School, Morgan's multiple musical skills and overall background enabled her prompt acceptance into New York's prestigious Juilliard School of Music where she studied, intending to become an opera singer. She studied opera by day and performed whenever possible.^[3]

Early career[link]

Morgan sang popular songs in nightclubs, private parties, bar mitzvahs, and small restaurants to earn spending money to help pay for her tuition expenses at Juilliard.^[4] Eventually she was hired as a singer at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan with the house second band for $25 a week, six nights a week. While she was still in Juilliard (1944), orchestra leader Art Mooney heard her perform and hired her. Mooney changed her name to Jane Morgan by taking the first name of one of his vocalists, Janie Ford, and the last name of another, Marian Morgan.^{[citation needed]}

In 1948, Morgan was chosen by French impresario Bernard Hilda to accompany him to Paris.^[4] Hilda was a prominent French society bandleader who needed a young singer to perform at a nightclub that he planned to open near the Eiffel Tower. Morgan began to appear regularly at the Club des Champs-Elysées, performing (two shows per night) American songs to mostly French audiences. Her mother had taught her French and Italian, so she quickly became proficient in French, and performed her act in flawless French, singing the classic songs of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, French songs, and standards of the century. Morgan became a sensation in Paris,^[5] and accompanied by Hilda and his gypsy violin, quickly became known throughout France. French café society frequented Hilda's upscale club, which was likened to the Copacabana in New York. Many French songwriters, including Charles Trenet, frequented the club, and they wrote several songs that became hit recordings for Morgan. Morgan and Hilda soon opened a new weekly hour-long television show, and she began recording in 1949 on the French Polydor label as well as Parlophone, Philips, and others.^[6]

In 1952 Morgan went to Montreal, Canada, and opened at the Ritz Hotel as a soloist with a bilingual act using French and English. She returned to New York with regular performances in upscale nightclubs and her own radio show on NBC, backed by the 50-piece NBC Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. She returned to Europe in 1954 to appear in a London West End review with comedian Vic Oliver, and later at the Savoy Theatre and London Palladium.^[4][7] During this period, Morgan married Larry Stith.

American success[link]

Morgan desired to advance her career in the US, but initially found that booking agents and managers in show business felt she was too specialized and would never make it outside the nightclub circuit. Meaning to prove them wrong, she left her agent and began singing at Lou Walters' Latin Quarter in New York. Walters kept Morgan at the Latin Quarter for a year, when she was noticed by Dave Kapp, who had recently founded a new recording label, Kapp Records. Kapp signed Morgan to a recording contract, and near that same period he also signed pianist Roger Williams.^{[citation needed]}

In order to counter her reputation as a French singer, Kapp had Morgan record "Baseball, Baseball," and her first album release was entitled "The American Girl from Paris". She recorded several additional albums and soon was paired with Williams, who had gained national acceptance with his recording of Autumn Leaves. They recorded Two Different Worlds, which gave Morgan her first significant airplay on US radio. In 1957 Kapp brought The Troubadors, a virtually unknown group of five musicians, to his studio. They had appeared in the 1957 comedy film Love in the Afternoon.

Kapp asked Morgan to join The Troubadors and sing a song Fascination. Although written in 1904 by Italian F. D. Marchetti and entitled "Valse Tzigane," it had been modified and used in Paris at the Folies Bergère as a "strip" number. With English lyrics added by Dick Manning in 1932, it had also been played throughout the 1957 movie (the French lyric had been created in 1942). Her recording was released in late 1957 and remained on the charts for 29 weeks. In 1958 Kapp released The Day the Rains Came (a French song by Gilbert Becaud called "Le jour où la pluie viendra") with Morgan singing in English on one side and in French on the other. It reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in January 1959.^[8]

This led directly to her first TV Special, Spectacular: the Jane Morgan Hour in early 1959. She was featured on the 10 November 1959 jazz special Timex-All-Star Jazz III alongside Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Anita O'Day, Gene Krupa, Bob Crosby's Wildcats, Les Brown and his orchestra and Chico Hamilton and his orchestra.

Middle years[link]

Morgan wanted to perform in musicals on the stage and Broadway. She appeared in Can-Can, Kiss Me, Kate, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bells Are Ringing, Anniversary Waltz, Affairs of State and others. She also appeared in nightclubs around the U.S., complemented with television appearances and bookings in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. In 1959, Morgan was one of six contestants in A Song for Europe to determine the UK's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 1959. She sang "If Only I Could Live My Life Again", but the song was not selected.^{[citation needed]}

Morgan's agent died in 1959, and her new manager, Jerry Weintraub, was able to obtain bookings for her in many noted US venues. (Morgan divorced Larry Stith and would later marry Weintraub in 1965; she and Weintraub later adopted four children.) In 1960, she recorded the English language version of an Italian song, Romantica. The recording was an airplay hit on BBC Radio. She continued recording for Kapp until the middle of 1962.^{[citation needed]}

Later years[link]

Morgan ended her association with Kapp Records after eight years. Weintraub negotiated a deal for three albums for Colpix including Jane Morgan Serenades the Victors, a side by side LP along with that recorded by Frank Sinatra as dual soundtracks of the music heard in the film The Victors. Morgan's second Colpix LP, The Last Time I Saw Paris garnered excellent reviews and a hit single, "C'est Si Bon". After fulfilling her contract with Colpix, Morgan recorded numerous singles and four albums for Epic. During this period she had consistent hit singles on the adult contemporary charts and continued to appear on top TV programs of the day. Morgan appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Canada in 1964; was the lead singer with Bea Lillie and Carol Lawrence in the Broadway musical production of the Ziegfeld Follies, and succeeded Angela Lansbury in Mame in 1966. "Being on Broadway was one of the most exciting things in my life because I had always dreamed of it", she said.^{[citation needed]}

In 1966, Morgan recorded the song that she had performed at the Academy Awards, I Will Wait for You, written for her by Michel Legrand. From 1967-68, Morgan was under contract at ABC Records, recording a dozen singles and issuing one LP which produced several hit singles and led to her second TV Special, The Jane Morgan Special. Syndicated in March 1968, the show featured the Doodletown Pipers and its highlight was her musical tribute to Edith Piaf. Her two final albums were for RCA Records.

Her final LP, Jane Morgan in Nashville, yielded two big hits on the country and western charts including her answer to Johnny Cash's song, A Boy Named Sue, titled A Girl Named Johnny Cash. She performed the song on Cash's TV series in early 1971. Producer Ronnie Light worried that his age (25 at the time) might make Morgan uneasy.^[9] But co-producer Chet Atkins stated that Morgan was a joy and that everyone enjoyed working with her. He also noted that she sincerely wanted to be a success in the country/western music genre. Of the experience, Morgan stated that she was "thrown a bit" by the fact that Nashville normally dispensed with formal arrangements and was known for "head arrangements". The only other time she had recorded without formal arrangements was on her hit single, "Fascination"; nevertheless she was named "The Countryest Girl in Nashville" by the crew.^[9]

She made some of her last TV appearances on the Johnny Cash Show and The Merv Griffin Show in 1971. She retired from performing in 1973, but has appeared occasionally over the years at special events and benefits. She has in recent years worked as a production assistant to her husband on films including the remake of Ocean's Eleven.^{[citation needed]}

On December 10, 2009, Morgan performed at the UNICEF Ball honoring her husband, Jerry Weintraub, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, singing "Ten Cents a Dance" and "Big Spender". On May 6, 2011 she received the 2,439th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.^[10]

Known as Jane Weintraub, she divides her time between Malibu, California, Palm Springs, California and Kennebunkport, Maine. Morgan has owned Blueberry Hill Farm in Kennebunkport, Maine since 1958.^{[citation needed]}

Morgan performed for French President Charles de Gaulle, and for five U.S. Presidents: John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George W. Bush. She toured with Jack Benny and John Raitt, and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry. Two of her RCA singles hit the Billboard country charts in 1970.^{[citation needed]}

Television appearances[link]

• Morgan made her American TV debut on Celebrity Time in 1951. Her early television credits include The Victor Borge Show, The Colgate Comedy Hour, Cavalcade of Stars and The Jonathan Winters Show. She made more than 50 appearances/performances on the Ed Sullivan Show.^[11]

• Among the many television specials Morgan appeared in were Highways of Melody 1961; Bell Telephone Hour: "A Trip to Christmas, 1961; Bell Telephone Hour: Christmas Program, 1965; Bell Telephone Hour: Masterpieces and Music, 1966; Coliseum, 1967; Kraft Music Hall: Broadway's Best, 1969 and Operation: Entertainment, 1969.^[11]

• Morgan starred in three television specials: The Jane Morgan Hour, 1959; Voice of Firestone: An Evening in Paris, 1959 and The Jane Morgan Show, 1968.^[11]

• Morgan made a few dramatic appearances on TV: The Web: Rehearsal for Death (1952); Peter Gunn: Down the Drain (1961); and It Takes a Thief: The Suzie Simone Caper (1970).^[11]
