Stories from HC Andersen (Illustrated by Edmund Dulac)
Stories from HC Andersen (Illustrated by Edmund Dulac)
Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac, October 22, 1882 - May 25, 1953) was a French book illustrator prominent during the so called "Golden Age of Illustration (the first quarter or so of the twentieth century). Born in Toulouse, France, he began his career by studying law at the University of Toulouse, but also followed classes in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, switching full time to art after he became bored with law, and also having won prizes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He spent a very brief period at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1904 before moving to London. In London, the 22-year old Frenchman was picked up by JM Dent and given a commission to illustrate the collected works of the Brontë sisters. He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery would commission paintings from Dulac and then sell the rights to Hodder & Stoughton, who would publish the books (one book a year over many years) while the gallery would sell the paintings. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights(1907) (including 50 colour images), an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908) (including 40 colour images), of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909) (including 20 colour images), The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910), Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911), The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912) (including 28 colour images and many monotone illustrations) and Princess Badoura (1913 ...

Edmund Rubbra - Symphony No. 6, op. 80, 2nd mvt. (Hickox)
Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986), UK Symphony No. 6, op. 80 (1953-4), II. Canto: Largo e sereno Recorded in 1996 by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Conducted by Richard Hickox [Prefaced by a quote from the great Italian Romantic poet Giacomo Leopardi: "Sempre caro mi fu quest'ermo colle, E questa siepe, che da tanta parte Dell'ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude." (Always was this lonely hill dear to me, / And this hedge which shuts out / So much of the distant horizon.)] One of the most beautiful and mystical symphonic movements by Rubbra. Note the opening fifths in the horns, the solo clarinet plunging into the arms of warm divisi cellos, the simple violin solo, the ra-ta-ta summons of the timpani at the climax, and then the restoration of the calm strings-and-horns sound. And bear in mind what immediately follows the Leopardi lines Rubbra quotes: "But as I sit and gaze, my thought conceives / Interminable vastnesses of space / Beyond it, and unearthly silences, / And profoundest calm."... The photos (by a friend of mine) are of the serene and heavenly quiet Croatian island of Mljet, one of our more impressive seascapes, in summer 2008. It is also a national park.

Detour: Tom Neal, Ann Savage, Claudia Drake, Edmund MacDonald, Tim Ryan, Esther Howard (1945 Movie)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Detour (1945) is a film noir thriller that stars Tom Neal, Ann Savage, Claudia Drake and Edmund MacDonald. The movie was adapted by Martin Goldsmith and Martin Mooney (uncredited) from Goldsmith's novel and was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The 68-minute film was released by the Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), one of the so-called "poverty row" film studios in mid-twentieth century Hollywood. Although made on a small budget with bare sets and straightforward camera work, Detour has gathered much praise through the years and is held in high regard. Al (Tom Neal) is a piano player who sets off hitchhiking his way to California to be with his fiancee. Along the way a convertible driven by Charles Haskell Jr. stops to pick him up. Al is driving while Haskell sleeps when a rainstorm begins and Al pulls over to put up the top. However, Haskell does not wake up and falls out onto the pavement, dead. Al dumps the body in a gully, takes Haskell's money, clothes and ID, then drives off in Haskell's expensive car. In voiceover, Al tells the audience that he did not kill Haskell. After spending the night in a motel, Al picks up another hitchhiker. As it happens, Vera (Ann Savage, playing a femme fatale) had earlier ridden with Haskell and blackmails Al by threatening to turn him in for murder unless he gives her all the money. In Hollywood they rent an apartment and while trying to sell the car, learn from a newspaper that Haskell was about ...

Pink Floyd - Live at the UFO club (march '67
didnt see this on youtube,so i'll uploaded it This is a very rare Pink Floyd footage, apparently from March 1967; it was included on a bootleg DVD, and lately has emerged also on the web (I found it on Soulseek). It is part of a German film called Die Jungen Nachtwandler (The Young Nightcrawler), a documentary about the British musical scene in the sixties. The director Edmund Wolf also appears on the clip for a short comment. Unfortunately the Floyd are shown for just some brief sequences, while they are performing an amazing improvisation, probably a crazy version of Interstellar Overdrive. The camera concentrates more on the audience, we can see enough details to be sure, doing a comparison with some old photos, that this is actually the legendary UFO club! The video makes you really breathe the atmosphere of those days, an exciting experience for the fans of the early Pink Floyd who have already dreamed several times to take a time machine and be there.
